  1. "kick these guys while they are down." Assuming these guys will come in down is a huge mistake. They have been getting beat up both on the field and in the media, but coming off a big win with 4 months to go against the division leader, I expect them to be coming in loaded for bear.
  2. I don't believe the premise of this thread. First, ESPN has no credibilty. Second, it's June 2nd. The White Sox are 6 weeks away from making any decision about dumping players. Third, the Sox will make every effort to keep Buehrle who is the leader of their staff and has stated he wants to stay in Chicago. Dye perhaps could be had at some point. But the Sox will want a young OF in return. They won't give him away.
  3. Obermueller has always had enough stuff to be a solid major league pitcher. His problem has always been that he tends more often than not to struggle with his command. Then he'll start issuing some walks, then eventually he'll get behind in the count and groove one. Though he's had those games that have been pointed out where he's pounding the zone and getting ahead of hitters. When he does that, he's tough. His last few starts, he's struggled. I've got to believe this game has special meaning for him so he will be either too jacked up and be all over the place, or really locked in and very tough. He also needs a decent game to keep his rotation spot and possibly a job (pretty much the story of his career). So that may be weighing on him too.
  4. The guys in the Cub pen (Howry, Wuertz, Eyre, Ohman, Dempster), all have some record of success in the past. If they ever all start to pitch like their capable, then I'd worry. Of course if that happens, its likely guys like Marquis will come back down to earth.
  5. The Brewers will face 3 lefties in the next 6 days, Olsen, Willis, and Lilly. Mench will probably get starts against all three. If he doesn't do anything in those 3 starts, just release him if there isn't a deal out there.
  6. "dangling Jones and Prior". Prior can't pick up a baseball until November or December at which time the Cubs may not want to offer him arbitration so he may have thrown his last pitch as a Cub. His value is less than nothing. The fans all want Jones dealt, but he's got a fairly large contract and is not all that attractive to other teams. The Cubs are stuck. The guys they'd like to get rid of, Jones, Howry, Eyre, are all saddled with big contracts.
  7. Taylor Green eh? This Canuck who was a 25th rounder deserves some Power 50 love eh? And that.
  8. Scratch Aquino off the help list. He did a Turnbow in the 9th for Nashville today. 3 BB, 1 H, in 2/3 of an inning.
  9. Let's not overlook the contribution by Shouse. He's now allowed more hits than innings pitched. There's got to be a better lefty out there somewhere who's available.
  10. All those who still don't think this bullpen needs some reinforcements please raise your hand. Personally, I'd have gone with Cordero once they had 2 on with one out. Tomorrow they face Obermueller and they shouldn't need a closer in that one. Spurling throwing BP. Maybe that should be his job. It might get the offense going.
  11. Idiotic Braves announcer while Braun batted: "Corey Koskie had been playing third but he went on the DL with post concussion syndrome. He's expected back in about a week so meanwhile they've brought up Braun to see what he can do". That's worse than a couple of years ago when Skip Carey thought Dan Kolb was the class A Brewer farmhand by the same name. Man I hate the Braves. 42 years and counting.
  12. Alex Rios is the best player on that list and he's only 26. I'd have to consider it if the Brewers could turn around and deal for another young arm with what would be a huge OF surplus.
  13. foamboy1, I don't disagree with anything you said although the Brewers could still use another lefty right now. But sometimes you don't make deals for now, you make them for down the road. For now, they need to clear up the overcrowded OF and IF now that Braun is up. Cordero is a free agent after this year. Turnbow is the only candidate to close next year and we know that he runs hot and cold. Picking up a currently struggling guy who still has the stuff to be a late inning reliever, and getting him straightened out might give you more options for 2008. The Sox have several guys that fall into that category.
  14. "If we could get Nick Masset..." Reality check. Brewers are trying to unload unproductive overpriced veterans that play positions that are overcrowded. The only thing to expect in return are either low level grade C prospects or other overpriced unproductive veterans who might bolster an area that is not overcrowded on the Brewers such as in the bullpen. Nick Masset doesn't fall anywhere near either of those categories. The equivalent would be the Brewers trading Carlos Villanueva for Emil Brown.
  15. News item: White Sox lose Pablo Ozuna for 3-4 months. Can't think of a better time to at least be talking to them about Graffanino.
  16. Bush's ERA now 6.13. That's in over 60 innings so it's not such a small sample anymore. Yo Gallardo, your next.
  17. I believe there is could be going on with the White Sox involving one or both of these guys most likely Mench. I heard the Sox assistant GM today say basically that they are trying to figure out what to do in the OF and he didn't rule out solving it via trade. Later I heard that Kenny Williams is with Charlotte this weekend and it was speculated that he wanted to see which of several guys he would feel comfortable giving up in a deal of some sort. Now they have two lefty relievers at Charlotte, Reynoso and Vasquez, either of whom might interest the Brewers. The Sox already have 3 lefty relievers on the big club so they are pretty well stocked. Mench is a nice fit for them in LF. They have too much at stake to trust their young OF. The other guys they have tried out there, Mackowiak and Osuna are basically utility guys.
  18. statman0007: "the fact that Estrada doesn't walk is the reason I wouldn't want him in the eight spot" I believe just the opposite statman0007. The fact that Estrada doesn't walk or put another way, can hit bad balls, is exactly the reason he should hit 8th. Clearing the pitcher's spot is one of those secondary goals. Yeah it has some effect, but it's less important that having the 8th hitter capable of getting a runner in against a pitcher who is basically pitching around him. What do you want with a runner in scoring position and two out? A walk to get to the pitcher and gets the top of the order up next inning, or a hit that gets that runner in. Give me the latter. Estrada will actually draw more walks, many intentional, hitting 8th as the difference between facing him and the pitcher is a lot more than facing Counsell and the pitcher. But hitting 8th in the NL is not where you put a rookie in his debut. kwelak21 has the right lineup. Braun should hit 7th ahead of Estrada.
  19. Does Rottino get more starts at 3B now instead of C and if so, does this portend a Palmisano promotion to split time with Rivera?
  20. Isn't the whole "trading Mench weakens the offense" more than offset by now by Braun? The Brewers could get away with either Jenkins or Gwynn in there vs. lefties with Braun in the lineup. Lefties don't seem to bother Gwynn and Jenkins has had years where he did all right. Mench wasn't much better anyway. Against lefties, Yost would bat Jenks or Gwynn down in the order anyway. Graffanino and Mench by themselves have little trade value because of their salaries. Together, they might draw some interest from a team needing an OF bat and some infield depth who has a guy with a less than desirable contract that might be expendable. The Sox fall in that category Sure MacDougal is not all that desirable. He's inconsistent, and has a multiyear contract. If he was perfect, he'd be unavailable (he may still be). But he is a hard thrower who has actually closed and been a setup guy. Getting those guys when they are in a bad stretch is the way to go. That's how Melvin was able to get Cordero.
  21. Capuano is doing a good job of opening up a rotation spot for Gallardo.
  22. Number 10 for Braun! Let's hope Melvin and Ash bring him back with them.
  23. LF has been a black hole for the White Sox. There's no telling when Podsednik will return, but even when he does, he's likely to get platooned. Joe Crede has a balky back. I would offer them Mench and Graffanino (still a popular guy on the south side) for currently out of favor reliever Mike MacDougal who has a contract through 2009 that the Sox might want to get out of but is close to the total for Mench and Graffy this year.
  24. The Brewers are reaping what Melvin sowed. He chose (I believe with MA in his ear) to spend a lot money on aging expensive vets to fill the bench. That has left them with very little roster flexibilty. Normally when a team struggles, they make a roster move or two to shake things up. Now one of those vets is below the Mendoza line, another just above it. But we're stuck with them.
  25. Dare I say I'm starting to long for Butch Wynegar?
