  1. Reds have placed Votto on the DL. Now if they can just keep Schebler on the DL a few extra days and have Scooter and Suarez come up with something by next week, I like the Brewers chances in that series.
  2. Schoop is showing signs. Yesterday, he hit a ringing RBI double into the RF gap, then with the bases loaded and the tying run on first, he squared up a pitch off Cishek, who is tough on RH. that Schwarber ran down in left. If that ball is 15 feet further to his left, it clears the bases. I think he's settled in now and ready to take off.
  3. They are getting a guy who was a consensus top 100 prospect in 2016 and is only 24. My guess is they are building the taxi squad for 2019 with potential for more. His resume is not all the different than Woodruff.
  4. Jim Hendry was the gift that kept on giving. So sad that Theo took over... Theo's losing his touch. He's not getting the return he thought from the Quintana deal as Eloy Jimenez is the early odds on for 2019 AL ROY and Dylan Cease has been absolutely dominating in AA. Then he spent more than double what the Brewers spent on Chacin for Tyler Chatwood who's been awful and $126 million on Darvish for what so far is one win. His drafting of David Bote in the 18th round in 2012 looks pretty good though.
  5. I don't think you can assume that the Brewers will continue on a .500 pace the rest of the way. The roster is good enough to get hot over an extended period if the bullpen issues correct themselves and the starters pitch to their seasonal norms. The recent bullpen struggles and some shakiness in the rotation could also make .500 very difficult.
  6. Overall numbers are pretty ugly but 3 of his last 4 starts have been pretty good against the likes of the Indians, Astros, and Mariners. Wouldn't cost them much more than the proverbial bag of balls. Have to think he's cleared waivers by now.
  7. I think having to use Chacin to PH in the 5th inning for fear of running out of position players later on played a role too.
  8. There's still time for the Schoop trade to work out. When the trade happened he was the hottest hitter in the AL, and Yelich was the hottest hitter in the NL. Both now have gone cold. That's baseball. Hopefully they'll turn it on soon. What bugs me is the Brewers supposedly had interest in Mike Fiers at the deadline but couldn't even come up with a reasonable offer to land him. In his first start with Oakland he allowed 1 run and fanned 8 in 5 1/3 innings against the Dodgers.
  9. Hader isn't pitching enough and neither his Burnes. I get giving multiple days between appearances when a guy goes multiple innings, but Burnes hasn't gone beyond an inning since July 21st. In the 20 games since that date, Burnes has logged just 7 innings and thrown a mere 115 pitches. With Soria and Williams on the DL, Counsell can't be afraid to use Burnes on back to back days at least once a week. Burnes is almost 24. He's not a teen. Right now he's in the late inning mix and the alternatives are not so good.
  10. He's been raking after being signed as an undrafted FA in late June. Can't believe this guy went undrafted. He had a terrific junior year at Florida International, blasting 16 HR, and slugging .686, and earned a national collegiate player of the week award in April. Glad the Brewers grabbed him, but amazing nobody took him in the draft.
  11. The market for bats last year was fairly weak. If I had to choose between Thames and Moustakas, I'd take Mousetakas.
  12. I'd take him in a heartbeat if the price was right.
  13. Stats don't show it but Perez' might have the highest baseball IQ on the team. He would be an adequate regular as a middle infielder but be less valuable overall than he is as a utility player.
  14. Stearns was feeling burned by the tepid return he got for the premier slugger in the game right now, Khris Davis, and was holding out for more for Santana. He overrated Santana when he dealt Davis to make room for him and he thought his value was more that it was but scouts had concerns.
  15. If you are going to keep moving your best pitching prospects to the pen in the big leagues, then treat them like major league relievers and stop babying them.
  16. 3-2 curveballs to weak hitters. I don't get it. Then after walking Galvis, Pina sets up off the plate on first pitch to weaken hitting back up catcher. Geesh.
  17. Absolutely. Arcia's has always seem to teeter on that fine line between confidence and arrogance. That's not unusual for young guys who have success early in their careers. He's capable of so much more than .250. He could be a star if he gets his head right. But he could be a major flame out. I'm fine with Counsell not using him every day and getting his best in 3 starts per week or so the rest of the way.
  18. I'm not 100% certain that Santana will be up in September for the following reasons. One is that he hasn't hit to the level at CS that indicate he's even close to his 2017 form so with Counsell already juggling 4 regulars in the OF and with better defenders available in Broxton (assuming he's back) and Perez, who's bat has heated up, there's not much opportunity for Santana to see time other than the random PH spot, and even then they are deep enough that he's not the prime or even the second choice to hit. Secondly, he's arby eligible this winter. There's some question whether they will bring him back because, as of now going into 2018, he's no better than the 5th outfielder. Teams don't usually pay $2-3 million for a 5th outfielder. There's not much he can do to revive his trade value either by riding the big league bench in September.
  19. Bethancourt has definitely earned a spot. He leads the Skysox in HR by a fairly wide margin. Defensively, he's caught 43% of base stealers. Having a 3rd catcher allows Counsell to double switch the position.
  20. I believe Peralta's inning limit is likely 150 (increase of 30 innings over his 2017 total), which would give him roughly 35 more innings, which is about 6 more starts. With a 6 man rotation that would take him to mid to late September when they could go back to 5 man rotation or possibly have Nelson back for a couple starts. If he's pitching well, I think you have to keep him going as long as possible rather than have him use up innings in AAA or adjust to a different role.
  21. MLB Network is slightly better, but all their guys when asked who'll win the Central go with the Cubs too. Whether it's ESPN, MLB Network, or Fox Sports, they all live in the same echo chamber.
  22. Since beginning of the 2017 season, the Brewers are 151-126 and the Cubs are 157-117. That's not a big difference over 275 or so games, yet I've yet to hear one pundit on the national scene go out on a limb and predict the Brewers will win division. They could have gotten Machado, Moustakas and Realmuto at the deadline and they still would be picking the Cubs. It's the herd mentality at work. It permeates all of the media these days including news and sports. I'm in the Chicago area, and I'll bet half the radio hosts on Chicago sports radio can't name 10 players on the Brewers. I know they can't name the guys in the Brewer rotation.
  23. "assuming that the current rotation remains healthy, it's going to boil down to whether or not the brewers wish to option freddy peralta or junior guerra" Not so fast. There's no way Junior Guerra gets optioned. None. What it boils down to is whether they go with a 6 man rotation (which was the plan before Davies had his setback with his back) or Peralta gets optioned. The latter may depend on how Peralta performs Thursday. I'm betting they go with a 6 man rotation, with Davies starting Sunday vs. Atlanta. Yes I realize the schedule is light from here on out, but it will be basically each starter getting one start per week. That will keep each guy strong down the stretch and still limit Peralta's innings. So for me Lyles replaces Albers, then Davies replaces Barnes on the 25 man.
  24. Chase Utley had 2 HR in his first pro season in 175 PA as a 21 year old. Odds are that by the time Turang is 22, he'll have added 20 pounds to his frame and be able to drive the ball. Maybe not to the level that Utley did, but he doesn't have to.
  25. Look within? Quinton Torres-Costa? He's been pretty impressive. Allowed just 22 hits in 42 2/3 innings and zero home runs. I don't think it's a pressing need but Torres-Costa certainly should be considered for a September call up.
