  1. Tough days to hit, but this team won't be bothered to adjust their approach. Yelich gives one weak attempt to bunt, then goes back hacking.
  2. Schwarber lost a ball in the sun in the first inning but Almora was hustling all the way and made an easy catch after a long run. With the Brewers it's as if they are surprised when sun and wind is a factor. The wind was blowing it toward Santana who didn't want to be bothered. These types of plays on this kind of day are the difference between winning and losing. There was a post this winter when the idea of dealing Santana came up and a scout was quoted as saying Santana is not a winning player. Another goof up now on the infield.
  3. There's probably not much to differentiate Miley from Suter at this point. But there's not much to lose by giving him a couple starts in that spot and letting Suter have a mental break. On the off chance Miley could string together 7 or 8 good starts prior to Nelson's return, he'd carry some value as a trade piece if he's not needed in someone else's spot. It comes down to maintaining depth and flexibility and he does figure in.
  4. Now if they can get Nick Nelson in round 5, they'll be set at corner.
  5. He started slow last year but nothing like this year. He had 5 HR, and 12 RBI and a .774 OPS in April of 2017. His OPS right now is a pathetic .569 and he's got a grand total of 1 extra base hit in 87 PA and just 3 RBI. If Choi doesn't pick it up and soon, the move to make is to bring up Phillips.
  6. I suspect that if Ji-Man were tearing the cover off the ball in AAA, he'd have been called up to replace Thames. I think they'd like see him get it going. If he does, I'm sure he'll be up soon.
  7. Hindsight is 20-20, but based on the results so far for all the names mentioned as possible trade targets this winter, the best by far has been Patrick Corbin, who nobody (well not nobody) seemed to want. Could he have been had for Santana? We'll never know. We do know he can't be had now.
  8. Hader and Jeffress might be co-MVP's on this team so far.
  9. Two games coming up in KC which means a chance to have both Thames and Aguilar in the lineup and a top 6 of Cain, Yelich, Braun, Shaw, Aguilar and Thames.
  10. D@*m cancer. Really enjoyed his work and his positive outlook.
  11. Time to cycle back to Woodruff in the 5th spot? Suter's ERA sitting. at 5.68. That's not terrible over a still small sample, but they have multiple alternatives.
  12. ???? Chacin is a career .187 hitter which makes him one of the better hitting pitchers in baseball.
  13. Under the radar move of the winter so far could be the acquisition of Jake Hager. Seems every other day, he's got multiple hits. Already has 8 extra base hits in 39 AB's. I get he was a disappointment in the Rays system after being 32nd overall selection in the 2011 draft, but he just turned 25 so he's not ancient. Maybe he just needed a fresh start. I saw him hit a bomb in a Brewer game in Arizona, and my thought was "who's this guy?" as I didn't find him in the media guide.
  14. Deeper meaning? I'll give you deeper meaning. They are trying like heck to unload Santana. Perez is a nice 5th outfielder.
  15. Can't believe it hasn't been posted yet but Brewers acquired utility infielder Tyler Saladino from the White Sox for cash and designated Alec Asher who they had claimed a couple days ago. I assume Saladino will be optioned but haven't seen that. Have to wonder if another move is coming. Saladino is a superb defensive player.
  16. Santana and his .545 OPS should be seeing a lot more bench time if the Braun can stay on the field.
  17. He's done a few good things but picking up simple groundballs isn't one of them.
  18. I'm a traditionalist as well, but that doesn't apply here. There used to be more scheduled Double-headers and less than 162 games. Traditionalists should be arguing for 154 games It's been 56 years since they played 154. 162 is hardly novel. I do miss Sunday doubleheaders and they still had them through the 70's. As a kid I felt cheated when family went to single games. Free agency killed doubleheaders.
  19. Just make the teams without roofs where weather is an issue play their first half dozen home games at their spring training base. Cubs drew about 15,000 a game in Arizona. That's more than actually showed up for their frigid games in Wrigley. Now that's an overreaction too, but more realistic than clubs giving up money.
  20. Their pitching looked very good against the Brewers but their lineup is really missing Suarez and Schebler.
  21. Overreaction to extremely unusual April. Rizzo's a gamer, but the shooting at his alma mater has gotten to him. Solution is blowing up Wrigley and building dome stadium, but that would be heresy.
  22. The offense and defense is key to how long starters go. If the score was 5-0 last night, Guerra finishes the 6th and likely starts the 7th. With very little offense, being generated early, those first 4-5 take on added stress which means higher pitch counts. Add in errors extending innings and 5 innings is an accomplishment.
  23. Village is versatile all right. He can't field multiple positions.
  24. Gennett has a .980 career FP at 2B and his range is about league average. He turns the double play well and throws are accurate. Villar does have better range, but he makes more errors (.964 career FP), makes mental errors and turns routine plays into adventures. I'd take Gennett over him any day of the week. In fact, I'd take Sogard right now over Villar too. Sogard's start reminds me of Aaron Hill in 2016. Hill was hitting rockets that got caught for the first 6 weeks as a Brewer. Then they started falling in. Sogard is squaring up as many or more balls than anyone in the lineup right now. It should be his job.
  25. I was out there like a voice in the wilderness in the off season saying they needed to allow Guerra a chance to show he was back to his 2016 version because if he was, that would be a key to the season. I had an inkling he would be. Perhaps they did too which is why they didn't go overboard to sign a FA. Guerra isn't a long term solution, but the system seems full of candidates for that. But as far as helping them get over the hump this season, he's great to have. So far, so good. At the very least, if he keeps performing well but the team in general doesn't, he'll have value at the deadline to a team that needs an extra starter.
