  1. Seattle in front of my widescreen clutching my Cecil Cooper game used bat.. It's magic, you know.
  2. http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y78/ChadFinn/546b3f7d.jpg
  3. As CC screamed at the end of the game . . . "F*** YEAH!!!!!!!!" Dale Svuem fo President.
  4. Ugh! After the game tonight I had some time to kill so I ordered up the Cloverfield or as I'll be calling it from now on . . "This was a Movie?" I mean really? This wasn't one of those campy throwbacks that run on Saturdays on SciFi? People paid money in a theater for this? I've played much more enjoyable (and scarier) video games. One thing about JJ Abrams 'tho . . . he knows how to cast hot chicks from Vancouver. For the 'ole birthday a co-worker got me a Sam Fuller box set with two I haven't seen (I Shot Jesse James and The Baron of Arizona) so I'll be enjoying that for the rest of the weekend. It also contains The Steel Helmet, and gods I love me some Steel Helmet. So I have that going for me, which is nice.
  5. You people are just like the Emmys . . .only one passing mention of The Wire. I would also like no nominate the entire cast of WKRP in Cincinnati. "What do you think he's going to do with the blow?" "Carlson's no fool man . . .he's going to put it on his feet!"
  6. Kiki was so freakin' Moneyball.
  7. Or the Red Sox even . . . . 8 game lead on the injury decimated Yankees. That would be a Met like collapse. And with the Yanks involved people would write operas. The Rays pitchers are still fine, right?
  8. World War II Alaska Kurosawa Baseball Coffee & Beer Stupid Answers (the best Jeopardy Category ever!)
  9. I'd contact Listach himself (now manager of the Iowa Cubs!). He might be willing to sell.
  10. Pay $600 for a dinner for two?
  11. You have GOT to be kidding me. Anybody want to take Yost over Sweet Lou today?
  12. Yes, 'cause having two incomes is whack.
  13. you know, I really don't want to fight here (i'm old . . creaky), but I disagree. Lou Piniella is a much better manager than Yost. Last night when Lou DIDN'T bring in the lefthander to face Fielder and instead walked him and had Gaudin get Hart, then DIDN'T bunt with Fontenot are examples. Lou doesn't play strictly by the book. Yost does (hence Torres in the 9th). Unfortunatly for that, that means when Lou fails, everyone screams and when Yost does we just say's "that's what the book says!" But Lou's biggest deal comes from taking heat off the players AFTER the game. The reporters flock to him for the good soundbite and let the players alone for the most part. Even in a toxic media town like Chicago (where Mariotti is spoiling for a fight with his own paper's beat reporters). Lou takes the heat and gives 'em what they want so they don't even have time to go down to the clubhouse, they're too busy trying to post a Lou rant to beat each other to the punch. There is something to be said for that. Last years Barrett v. Zambrano deal would have eaten most teams in a cancerous mess, but Lou handled it internally and got rid of the problem, even when most analysts argued Barrett's bat was invaluable. Yost's handling of most players issues (last year's Estrada mess, this year's Hall issues) are to pretend that they don't exist, so then they stew openly. just my thoughts.
  14. For some reason unknown to even me, I always name my teams after former Mariners reliever Edwin Hurtado.
  15. For the life of me, I can't figure out the fascination with Vertigo.
  16. Things to Do in Twin Cities? Suffer.
  17. Yeah the "Visit Minnesota Ads" cause me horrible PTS flashbacks from two time zones away. No thanks. And which exact team doesn't "love to win?" are we just saying we have more desire than the Pirates? Those bastards HATE to win!
  18. Like that year they sucked their way to a 116 win season followed by two 93 win seasons with him? Ichiro has NOTHING to do with why the M's are bad now.
  19. That was the deal breaker for Bavasi. When even Willie said he wanted out. when WFB speaks, people listen. http://media.kitsapsun.com/bsun/content/img/photos/2008/06/15/20080615-170701-pic-253209723_t220.jpg
  20. Excuse, but who is EDR? The world wonders. I was on a ferry in the middle of the Sound when somebody gave me the happy news. My response? "Great! What about Howard Lincoln?" Until this whole management team goes, nothing will really change. The only saving grace is that Jockety and Ed Wade already have jobs. My dream team? Gord Ash, President. Kim Ng, GM Never happen with Lincoln and Armstrong still around. Dave Littlefield might get an interview. And to raise anyone's ire in the memory of the now ended Bavasi years one only has to utter two words: Scott Spezio.
  21. whoever the refs want to win.
  22. Elite Seven a playmate with God. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3194/2565848010_3042dd1f5c_m.jpg i'm gonna make a killing on the christian rock circuit. double bill with DC Talk at the corn palace!
  23. Oh! I can do this one! 1. Rashomon - Because no other film of his has defined a concept as well. It started an idea in mainstream philosophy that film makers trying to recapture it afterwords have completely failed at. Its narrative is so dense and thick that to think of it as simple storytelling is limiting. It's a freakin' poem. They're ALL the truth. 2. Ikiru - showcases right off the top how Kurosawa uses all aspects of the medium during the soundless street crossing sequence. the director again eschews standard linear storytelling by splitting the film in half. dropping a not so random one-off flashback in the first half then using Rashomon like storytelling in the puzzle like second half. Actually advocates that the viewers become better people with it's bleak end. Slightly better than Life as a House. 3. Throne of Blood - I like this one so much because he really nails the adaptaion of the original story so well. Mfune's MacBeth actually seems like he's making choices and being driven mad for legitimate reasons rather than being a automoton going through the paces simply because "it is all foretold!" The attack of the trees sequence is transendent. 4. Seven Samurai - its only flaw is that it's a bit long and be tough to get through for a novice. There is a hell of a lot going on here and you need to watch it several times to understand, even from a filmaking standpoint why it's so freakin' brilliant. It has some of the best shots and sequences ever captured on film and the storytelling to back it up. Absolutely flawless. 5. High and Low - Again the narrative is the key with the split storytelling. The first half is simple good storytelling and the second half is beyond beautiful filmaking with some of the sparsest dialog around. Most movies, to follow what's going on, you don't have to even watch the screen. In the bar and drug den sequences you have to watch foreground and background in different quadrents to get all the information. (plus know a little some thing about classic art). 6. Ran - The attack on the first castle is possibly the greatest film sequence ever made, right down to the sweeping classical score ripped open by the single gunshot. It's noir Shakespear. It also has the best female charcter in a Kurosawa film. 7. Yojimbo - The anti-Kurosawa piece in a way. He shows his humanism in a different way here by turning the feeling on its end with a different kind of anti-hero who's only good deed is brutally punished. Mfune's character isn't any sort of avenging spiritual force like High Plains Drifter, he's always portrayed as a human who understands that his choices have consequences. And his own survival is the most important thing to him. 8. Kagemusha - The Ran "Run Through" actually stands on it's own for it's stunning visuals and scale, even if the script is one of the less "Kurosawian?" Man does this guy know how to kill horses. A LOT of animals were harmed in the filming of this. 9. The Idiot - The man really gets Russian lierature. Instead of a lot of critics I've read who make the Dostoevsky work about a Christ like figure, Kurosawa maks him all too human. Dostoevsky was a huge innovater of existentialism and Kurosawa seems to be one of the few people to have gotten that point in his translation. 10. Sanjuro - Really fun, and the end swordfight is absolutly perfect. If only Hollywood had seen the point of that.
  24. ah those poor Mariners. An attempt at both a job saving AND budget pick. Won't work on either front.
  25. What? "Dammmit" Bobby Hill? Nothing? he's was a star at Tom Landry Middle School?
