  1. I don't either. Prince, a far better (and younger) prospect than Gamel, was used as a bench player during his first season. He was up for about 2 1/2 months and only got 3 starts in the field. That's not to say that I would be in favor of Gamel being used almost exclusively as a bench player but the team has shown the willingness to use top prospects in that role in the recent past.
  2. A good question about Anundsen.
  3. I think that balls and strikes should be called by a Questec-style program. Hopefully they'll get that done soon, there's no excuse to let a bunch of incompetent umps have such a huge impact on the game when the technology is there to call the game impartially. I'm also generally in favor of instant replay, I don't think it hurts anything.
  4. I'm a true Brewer fan and I don't think 1 playoff appearance is a goal that is especially worth shooting for. Can't we all just agree that there is more than one reasonable perspective on the trade without accusing each other of not being true fans? edit: also, that's some interesting stuff about LaPorta. Rogers really seems to dislike him. If it was just a reluctance to sign stuff (Bill Russell went 30 years between autographs at one point), I wouldn't think it was that big of a deal, but there was clearly more going on.
  5. I'm happy for Matt. I hope he does well. The more former Brewer prospects that do well, the better because maybe teams will be more willing to deal if the Brewers are known for having valuable minor leaguers who turn into good major leaguers. Also, X, is that a joke or what? If not, failing to sign a photo doesn't seem like the worst offense in the world.
  6. Nix did go through the Texas system but he didn't really get to take advantage of great offensive environments. He spent the first 3 years of his career in the low-offense environments of the Gulf Coast League, Sally League and Florida State League, all of which routinely have league OPS's below .700. He played less than 200 games in the Texas League and in OKC combined. The vast majority of his PCL time was with Nashville, which is the same team Nelson has spent his whole AAA career with.
  7. Pitchers have bad years all the time. Suppan is 34. His 2008 was below replacement level. Nobody was predicting a 12 ERA for the whole season. Not even Roy Halladay in 2000 was able to pull that off. Suppan's FIP was 5.51 last season. I still think an ERA near 6 is plausible and I still dislike Suppan's presence on the team. If Suppan is a true talent 5 ERA guy, is it that unreasonable to think he could have a season of a 6 ERA if his control is a bit off because of aging?
  8. We all know that plenty of people have claimed in the past that Nelson would be a nice replacement for Fielder if Prince is traded for pitching. There are several threads to that effect. And I think Laynce Nix is a fair comparison. Their minor league numbers are quite similar, with Nix actually having an edge. Nix's career minor league OPS is .827 and his career AAA OPS is .879. Brad takes a few more walks, Laynce hits for a bit more power. and Russ, that's nice and selective of you. ZiPS also takes minor league stats into account and that system has Brad projected at a .714 OPS. I feel that that is a bit generous, but even if we split the difference between the two systems and give him a .735 OPS, that is still terrible for a 1st baseman. That's like an 85 OPS+. Maybe his replacement would be worse, but maybe not (Branyan was available to anyone last year). Also, there are guys who can bring some value in ways that Brad can't, like fielding and baserunning.
  9. Why do people insist on propagating the fallacy that Nelson is a good hitter or that he hit well in AAA? He has a .797 OPS in 369 career games in AAA and a .787 OPS overall in his minor league career. Those marks might be acceptable for a major leaguer (though not for a 1st baseman), but that's not how minor league statistics translate. He's not Prince Fielder, he's not a prospective Prince Fielder replacement, he's not a run producing slugger. We're talking about a guy who is probably about as good a hitter as Laynce Nix, but without any defensive value.
  10. I have to be fair, I bashed Suppan for his start to the season, so I have to give him credit for pitching better during his last few outings. I was worried he was totally washed up but now it looks like he's probably just his normal self. I still want him gone if at all possible, unfortunately I'm sure it isn't possible.
  11. Edmonds needs 18 homers for 400 and 119 hits for 2,000. I bet his concern is more about playing time because both of those milestones would really help his hall of fame case. He's not going to get in, imo, but he could be a guy who hangs around on the ballot for awhile with 8 Gold Gloves in CF and a .905 career OPS (though that would likely decline if he comes back). Anyway, I would certainly take Edmonds over Duffy and/or Nelson. Edmonds is a good example of how deceiving it can be to try to judge players by your eyes alone. Normally, if a guy with his career numbers got off to the start he did in San Diego last season, people would realize that it had only been a month and not think that that was his new true talent level. However, Edmonds looked so atrocious, it didn't seem possible that he would ever rebound.
  12. Nelson and Duffy should have been well aware that they are much worse than the players they are backing up, so if they are going to complain or something, I hope they get cut ASAP. Guys like them are a dime a dozen in AAA. That said, I hope the team makes a move if there is a Branyan-esque player in some other team's system that could be had for cheap. They could really use at least one player who could make a plausible DH or week-long injury replacement. I dread interleague play if this is still the roster. Maybe Gamel will get a temporary call-up for those games.
  13. I would hate Kendall starting every day too. Hopefully Rivera'll be fine in a few days but I haven't heard anything more about the injury.
  14. Odd, why would they think the Brewers would be especially interested in moving a guy who they have under control for 6 seasons? I don't know that Stetter is all that valuable, but really, that makes them less likely to deal him.
  15. Defense is cheaper, and with the economy as it it, that matters. Moneyball made a huge impact on how rosters are made. GMs are out looking for value where other teams missed it. Yeah, but as soon as defense becomes more recognized as valuable (or rather, that value is more confidently assessed), the price will go up and teams will move on to something else that has become cheaper.
  16. I still like Perez but he hasn't looked good so far. As krmanoj pointed out, he's had whole seasons like this in the past so I think it's too soon to count him as washed up.
  17. He hit a solo HR yesterday and a three-run homer today. If my math is correct, he's on pace to hit a 9-run homer tomorrow.
  18. It's funny. I'd rather get Peavy precisely because he still has years on his deal. Use that money they had earmarked for CC. $15 million in 2010, $16 million in 2011, and $17 million in 2012 is quite reasonable for a top pitcher, especially considering that the Brewers are paying a total garbage pitcher $12 million to lose games for them. I'd rather pay the extra $4 million per year and get a top player. If they were willing to pay $42 million for Suppan, they'd be crazy to not pay $48 million for Peavy.
  19. I'm still not sold on Lee, despite him being 30 already. In 5 full seasons, he's been great once, above average twice, and atrocious twice. In 2007, he got sent to the minors because of how bad he was pitching and was used as a reliever when he got called back up in September. I'm happy for him that he was able to bounce back from that and win the CY in 2008, but I wouldn't bet on him having another year like that any time soon. I'm afraid that he's more Esteban Loaiza than Randy Johnson if we're talking about guys who looked like they put it together when they were around 30 years old.
  20. Ok, I looked it up and Luis Castillo is the longest tenured Marlin to date. He played with them for 10 seasons, followed by Alex Gonzalez and Jeff Conine with 8 seasons. That's not as bad as I thought it would be, the Brewers have only had 13 guys get to 10 or more seasons and 26 (counting those 13) get to 8 or more.
  21. Their process can certainly be questioned. I'm pretty jealous of the results though. OTOH, I'd probably be one of the non-existent Marlins fans if I lived in Miami and had to worry about them trading every player I liked any time they got "expensive". Who is the longest tenured Marlin ever? That one chump who was an Oriole for a while? (I can't remember his name, I think it was Jeff something.) How long was he around?
  22. "You gotta keep your defense in the game" is the hoariest of baseball cliches. I can see where a pitcher may be upset but it's a pretty standard thing to say.
  23. It was just the same cliches that everybody says when a team is playing poorly. I don't think it's a sign of either great leadership or possible discord in the locker room.
  24. This is bizarre to me. A bench of Nixon, Lamb, and Gwynn would somehow give Macha more options? In what way? With each bench (the real one and the theoretical one), the only option is "leave them on the bench as much as possible." I don't think outfielders or 1st basemen ever really need a day off. Mike might need a little rest because he's getting old, but it shouldn't be much (10 games off all year, maybe?) Middle infielders probably could use 1 every couple weeks and catchers can use one every week. Kendall needs more than one per week because he is terrible and his backup is better than he is, but every other bench player (and spring training potential bench player) is clearly not even close to being the equal of the players they would replace. If Macha wants to sit Prince, Braun, Hart, JJ, Rickie, and Mike more for some reason, he's probably the wrong man for the job.
