  1. No problem, but do you care to enlighten us why? I'm just saying that I think it's reasonable to see them as an approximately .500 team. They don't have much good starting pitching and what they do have is young, not stretched out, and injury prone. Meanwhile, their lineup has 2 huge holes if Bill doesn't bounce back and their bench is terrible if any injuries strike (Kapler & Branyan were huge off the bench last season and were replaced by horrible players). Cameron is at an age where very few players have ever been good centerfielders, and their 2 best hitters both had down years last year. I can see optimism too, don't get me wrong, I'm just saying I don't think 82+ wins is an even close to sure thing.
  2. I don't think anybody hates Gwynn because of his name. What people don't like is the perception that Gwynn got drafted in the 2nd round because of his name. He also appears to get talked about as a prospect or piece of the future a lot more than a comparable player with a generic name would. He has never hit and isn't as fast or as good on defense as his devotees claim. He's a totally generic minor league outfielder, except he has anything but a generic name.
  3. I'm aware that Gillespie is DHing because of his injury. That was kind of my point, that they don't have to worry about displacing anyone worthwhile when they feel that Gillespie is OK.
  4. Yes, it's a perplexing move at this point.
  5. ESPN really has a gaggle of morons involved in their baseball coverage. Too bad MLB gave ESPN an exclusive opening day.
  6. Plenty of room in that outfield if they want to move Cain or Gillespie up to AAA soon.
  7. I think the Brewers will win 82 games. My wife likes them to win 88. Should be an interesting year. Can't wait!
  8. I don't think the over on Milwaukee is a no-brainer.
  9. I think the Mariners have a good chance of beating 73 wins, but I'm not sure I'd put money on it, especially with Ichiro's illness.
  10. If he doesn't regret it, he should. All 3 years that he played in Milwaukee, he was a well above average player and the Brewers could use more of those.
  11. Usually in sports you earn a spot by being good. Too bad the Brewers aren't in a position to choose players on that basis.
  12. If Tyner is assigned to Nashville, that will mean he's played in AAA in 10 of the past 11 seasons. The only exception was 2007, which he spent with the Twins. He's the Brian Shouse of position players.
  13. I disagree. The consensus seemed to be that he should be dealt to the AL and never be a starting player on the Brewers. I'll continue to hope that such assessments are mistaken because it would be fun to have a tiny little catcher who can hit like Angel on the team. So far in his career, Angel's OPS is .138 points above the league average OPS. That's better than every Brewers player except for Prince & Braun. Hopefully he can keep that up in AAA this year and make his case for being a long-term piece of the team. Lucroy looks good, don't get me wrong.
  14. Everybody seems to hate Salome. Too bad, I was hoping he would be an important part of the team soon.
  15. Not surprising that he got released. I could never stand watching him. Last year he didn't get enough PT in order to go on his one month run of good play that always salvaged his season numbers and it made sense because the Phillies had 3 far better players in the outfield and didn't need to suffer through 600 PA's of Jenkins.
  16. Agreed. He should stay at SS if the team wants to maximize his value.
  17. The Harry Chiti thing appears to be a bit of a myth, at least according to b-r's transaction log. It looks more reminiscent of a Rule 5 guy getting returned to a team because the new team wasn't happy with him than a guy getting traded for himself. Still odd, just not sure it meets the "traded for himself" criteria.
  18. It's pretty cool. I mostly use my membership to buy (relatively) cheap DVDs (I got a great deal on the James Bond box set once) but there are a few other things worth buying as well and their bakery is actually not bad (also, they sometimes have cheap gas, though not always). One thing to especially keep an eye out for: Until last year I always bought Duracell batteries because I felt like those were the best. Then I saw a chart in Consumer Reports that said that the costco brand (Kirkland) lasted just as long as Duracell and cost 20¢ each compared to Duracell's approx. 80¢ each. I use a pretty fair amount of batteries (even with a lot of rechargables in my rotation) so the batteries alone probably save me the $50 per year. They really do seem to last just as long as Duracells, so I've been happy with them.
  19. Yeah, this story is pretty disgusting. I understand traffic laws are there for a reason but it doesn't sound like the rolling stop put anyone in danger and there were clearly extenuating circumstances. Hopefully the perpetrator moves on to a new line of work if the way the incident is characterized in the article is accurate.
  20. Umm... I'm pretty sure that isn't who Gillespie was referring to. Apparently the writer thinks extremely highly of this Barnhart. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif I dunno, I thought it was pretty funny.
  21. I think he's dinging ownership for their lack of ability to field a $100+ million payroll. I think it's fair to do so, to some extent, because they have to compete with teams who can do that and that has to be factored in somehow. It's more fair to put that on the guy signing the checks than the front-office, imo, even though it's really the fault of neither.
  22. Hey everybody- I recently received an iTunes gift card but I don't want to use it on something that can just be purchased anywhere because I generally prefer to have a hard copy of an album. I know that some bands put out iTunes exclusive EPs and stuff and I also know that some out-of-print albums are available on iTunes (like Bob Dylan's critically savaged 1973 cover album, "Dylan"). So, does anybody have any recommendations of good or interesting stuff that isn't available elsewhere? Thanks!
  23. Macha's comments so far this season have not been encouraging. Why can't the Brewers just get a solid manager? Is it really that difficult to find one?
  24. Seems pretty classless by Macha. I see why Doug only gave him a 2 year deal. It doesn't seem like he'll even need that long to alienate all of his good players. I wonder who the Brewers will be looking to bring in to manage in 2010?
  25. my wife was showing me these pranks the other day and I was buying it until that guy's girlfriend slapped him at Yankee Stadium. I think they overplayed their hand on that one, it seemed fishy.
