  2. To be fair, Georgetown received a lot in return for Iverson's presence. It's not like English is the only subject that universities value.
  3. There are so many good 1st basemen in each league. I'm worried that Russ and Prince will both be forced out. Hopefully they can each keep doing what they're doing though.
  4. Oh no! I always liked him (I especially liked his voice, which I thought sounded cool). Too bad.
  5. How is Votto a prospect? He's got over 800 MLB PA's and he's 25. Bruce I can kind of see calling a prospect because he's only 22 still, but he's not a rookie either, he got 450+ PAs last year. Wandy Rodriguez is 30, one might as well call Carlos Zambrano (who's still just 28) a prospect. I'm not denying that Wandy may still have some upside, but that seems to stretch the definition a bit far. Anyway, this is where the Pirates' cheapness has really helped NL Central teams, otherwise we'd all have to be fearing Matt Wieters. The Cubs actually passed on him too but at least they got Josh Vitters (who is currently dominating the Midwest League as a 19 year old). The Pirates are stuck with a terrible relief pitcher who is striking out 3 guys per 9 in AA. As for division rookies who I fear, I'm a bit worried about Jake Fox. I know they say that he doesn't have a position but his numbers are totally ridiculous. He was terrorizing AAA to a greater extent than even Russ Branyan and Nelson Cruz were last year and we've all seen how well those two have hit since they got called back up. If they can find Fox some AB's, they may have something there. Before the season I was worried that the Cardinals might have the next dominating reliever in Jason Motte, but he's only been good so far, not great. I'm still pretty worried about him long-term though because he's been pitching for just 4 years and would seem to still have room for improvement. That 110 K's in 66.2 inning with Memphis last year really stands out. That's a Brad Lidge type of number. Rasmus looks like he could be good, I'm not sure though. He didn't do much in AAA last year but looks pretty serviceable for a 22 year old in the majors this season. The Cards will be hoping for an Adam Jones-esque break out from him in the future. Jones just held his own for his first year+ in the majors and is now showing why he was a highly regarded prospect. Of course, Chris Young's career path is also possible. I guess I don't have a strong feeling on Rasmus one way or the other.
  6. I wish DiFelice wasn't hurt/bereaved, swapping him and Parra for a couple weeks could make some sense. Of course, who knows if the Brewers would want to mess with DiFelice's success anyway.
  7. I hope it's just a bruise or something and he can come back in a few days. The team really needs him.
  8. Yeah, I think his emotions overwhelmed him and now he's retroactively trying to justify it. It's not really a big deal, there is no way the Magic cared about him slighting them at the time. It would be nice if he would have expressed himself a little bit better (I mean, what does "I'm a winner" mean in the context that he used it?), for example, you often see boxers congratulate each other after they literally have been beating up on each other for 36 minutes, it doesn't mean they aren't competitors, it just means they respected the effort of the other guy. He articulated his thoughts poorly and made it seem like he has disdain for sportsmanship, which I am 90% sure was not his intention. LeBron is usually one of the main guys hugging players on the opposing team before and after games. It's just that the stakes were extremely high in Game 6 and so he took the loss worse.
  9. I thought that it was a thumb or wrist injury (can't remember which) that the Pirates had him play through in 2001, not the ankle injury in 1999, that ruined his career. He never hit for any power after that, although he did hit for a good average in 2003 and 2004.
  10. Did anybody else hear during the broadcast tonight that Kendall's 3 year old niece is apparently a hardcore Brewer fan? She was getting so frustrated with her uncle's 46 OPS+ that she tried to kneecap him with an aluminum bat.
  11. Yeah. Plus, they should be put in a pillory so gawking rabble can pelt them with refuse. That'd teach them.
  12. Word is that Joe was called up by the Rays today. I'm happy for him, hopefully he'll do well.
  13. Jason Kendall is 2nd among catchers? I have to think that that is a big sign that only the Cards and Brewers have started their "Vote for our guys" push so far.
  14. Is it wrong to have less confidence in Riske than in Julio? The contract looked good at the time. Too bad about his ongoing injury woes.
  15. Not a bad move, but I'm not sure how much he has left in the tank. Hopefully he does well.
  16. If he doesn't get called back up (or reacquired at some point), he'll end his Brewers career with an OPS+ of 1. That is beautiful.
  17. I didn't see anybody mention it anywhere, but Hoffman pitched his 1,000th inning last night. That's a nice round number, much like Kendall's 2000 hits, and it also qualifies Hoffman for the career leaderboards now. His 2.745 career ERA ranks 84th in major league history. His strikeouts per 9 innings pitched of 9.585 ranks 4th in baseball history, behind only Randy, Kerry Wood and Pedro, and just ahead of Nolan Ryan.
  18. Probably. I'm not great at recalling things like that. I do remember that the team went with a 14 man staff at one point, maybe some time in 2007?
  19. Gwynn drew a walk in the bottom of the 9th with a man on 2nd and the Padres down 1 in his first PA with San Diego. He's currently on 3rd, representing the winning run. edit: and Scott Hairston just drove him in for the win. Nice way for TGJ to start his San Diego career.
  20. I hope Hernan does well in Nashville and gets another chance at some point. This move makes sense though. However, I'm not wild about a 13 man staff, hopefully it won't last for long and it won't come back to bite the Brewers.
  21. Gamel is 23. Prince was 21 when they did it to him and he lived through it. I was upset at the time but it doesn't seem to have hurt Prince. They're going to play Mat more starting tomorrow. I don't think a week or two as a part-time player will have a deleterious long-term effect on Mat's development.
  22. They had a plan. The plan was to remove Nelson from the team and their plan was successful. No real reason to worry more about it, I don't think. The fact that his value was minimal to non-existent was proven when no other team claimed him. I don't understand why the fact that Nelson was on the 25 man matters at all. Trent Durrington was on the 25 man at various points. It means nothing other than that a team is giving a guy a shot.
  23. Gwynn hasn't ever proven to be a AAAA player. He's barely even proven himself to be a AAA player. This is his 4th year in AAA and his OPS isn't even above .800.
  24. Not necessarily. Corey has been a disappointment. I've been wondering lately if Gamel might be ticketed to rightfield next year if he is unable to make it at 3rd (I obviously hope he can stay at 3rd). Of course, there are no guarantees that Gamel will be even as good as Corey is.
