  1. Statistically he is every bit as bad as Dunn and is approaching Manny territory in LF. Statistically speaking using DRS Lee rated as a -21.40 defensively in LF which is the worst season i think I've ever seen in LF. Adding offensive and defense he rated as the 21st best LF in baseball this year just slightly better than Brady Clark and behind guys like Fred Lewis and Josh Willingham. I'm no fan of Lee, but how can that be the case? Brady Clark got 11 PAs and played 16 2/3 innings in the field this season. He was also pretty bad in AAA, so I doubt you are including minor league translations.
  2. I just came on here to see if there was any news about this. I hope Russ and Sheets are healthy enough to be on it. Kapler would also be nice. I don't think Lamb can be on the roster because of when he was picked up (same thing with Coffey).
  3. This seems just like the normal "blame all the problems on the best player" mentality that is prevalent in sports. I mean, look at how they hate A-Rod in NY. (note: I'm not saying Ichiro is as good.)
  4. It's true that Gagne may support other charities too.
  5. My parents make a lot less than Gagne but they give a heck of a lot more than 2% to charity every year, as do many Americans. It's nice that Gagne is giving something but it's not enough to anoint him as a saint.
  6. I like Owings a lot (maybe more than most people), but that does seem like a small return for Dunn. Then again, it was only a couple months of Dunn and if Owings gets back to where he was last year, he'll be a nice piece for the Reds and they'll have him for 4-5 more years.
  7. That's cute, good find. I only got 47 on my best so far, I've been having trouble hitting the thing with the pillow. You gotta love the Ride of the Valkyries playing in the background, pretty funny. as an aside, I clicked on this thread thinking that it might be about a parody of Flight of the Conchords. I wonder if anyone else will make the same mistake.
  8. I've heard bad things about it, but I'll give it a shot after I save up a couple episodes on the tivo. It seems interesting and I really like Lance Reddick (the guy from Oz and The Wire), but I don't know how much he'll be in it. As for spoilers, why click on a thread about some show/movie if you don't want to know anything about it? I can see being disappointed if there is a thread filled with spoilers before the show/movie comes out, but after it's out, why not wait until you've seen it to click on the thread if you care about spoilers? I've never understood that. Plus, it's not like spoilers are a big deal if the movie/show is well done. Everybody knows that Rosebud was Charles Foster Kane's sled but that doesn't ruin the movie for anybody. If a show/film depends so heavily on a plot twist or gimmick that it's ruined if you know the twist, it's probably not anything special to begin with (with the possible exception of The Crying Game).
  9. Nix nixed. Somebody had to say it.
  10. You would really think somebody (Melvin? Simmons? Svuem? Kendall himself?) would tell Yost that Kendall is not a good hitter. Then again, he also had Counsell hitting in the 11th, so he obviously wasn't worried about getting an actually competent hitter to the plate.
  11. Liquid Swords - GZA
  12. I still can't believe that Lucroy is actually one of the possibilities. It's so weird that the Brewers would make him available. If he is one and the Brewers make the playoffs, the Indians take him for sure, imo. Brantley is intriguing, but he's not necessarily an impact player if he's a corner OF or (especially) a 1st baseman. Meanwhile, Victor Martinez is rumored to play more 1st base next year, and Shoppach is good, but is not great defensively. I see the Indians being very interested in a catcher of the future. And I agree that the Brewers would probably prefer the Indians take Cain, but I would think Brantley would be 2nd on that list from their perspective (if he can't play CF).
  13. wait, why would the Brewers keep Lamb next season when they have Branyan for the role of lefty power hitter off the bench? Branyan is simply a better player than Lamb. I'll be very disappointed if that's the plan. If only Russ had come up with Texas, his future would be assured. edit: btw, Lamb is assuredly a butcher at 3rd but he doesn't have the bat for 1st, LF or RF. He's like a lefty Wes Helms, though more error prone.
  14. This seems to show that they don't think Gamel is ready. I mean, I'm not saying they should think he's ready, just that he doesn't figure to get any PT down the stretch. It's a shame Russ is hurt, he's a heck of a lot better than Lamb. Lamb is a butcher at 3rd, but you can't expect too much when you sign a guy in September. Hopefully he'll at least hit for a couple weeks (although his season numbers are horrible and his career numbers are below average, a guy could get hot). It seems a little weird to hope that a guy who has hit .233 with 1 home run in 260 PAs this year will get hot, but at least Melvin gets to add another ex-Ranger.
  15. Yeah, I'd like to see Gamel get a few starts too. It's not like Hall and Counsell are doing much to help. Counsell could be used liberally as his caddy, but it would be nice to see a little bit of offense out of 3rd base. We had that month of Branyan and that's been it this season.
  16. I knew someone would point out that Hall is bad, but how bad he is wasn't my point so I included him. He's still the same kind of hitter as the other guys.
  17. I agree that the problem (as far as there is one offensively) is poor plate discipline. The Brewers are 2nd in the NL in slugging, home runs, and doubles, but 10th in walks. They don't do a good job of leveraging their power into favorable counts and free bases. Contrast that with the Cubs, who are first in slugging and doubles and also first in walks, or the the Phillies, who are first in home runs and 5th in walks. I know it's been noted many times, but all of the Brewers good hitters (except Prince) are the same type of hitter- high SLG, low OBP. Braun, Hardy, Hart, Cameron, Hall, even Kapler are all similar types. Melvin tried to get a little help in the OBP department when he signed Kendall, but he's too washed up and has a below league average OBP this year. Couple the poor OBP from most of the lineup with the struggles of the 2 guys with Iso's of .100 or above (obviously Weeks is struggling more than Prince) and that's why the offense isn't more comparable to the Cubs. That said, it is a pretty good offense overall, 5th in the league in runs and only .05 runs per game from being 3rd.
  18. I know draft position isn't everything (I mean, look how quickly Yovani developed as a 2nd rounder, or Pujols as a 13th rounder, or tons of other guys), but we haven't seen Lawrie play yet. Lawrie starts out #6 as the 16th pick. LaPorta started out #5 as the 7th pick. Jeffress started out #9 as the 16th pick. Braun started out #16 as the 5th pick. Rogers started out #10 as the 5th pick. Weeks started out #4 as the 2nd pick. Fielder started out #9 as the 7th pick. Those are the 1st rankings of the 1st rounders since the P50 started. I guess looking at that, that Lawrie being #6 is pretty fair, considering the strengths and weaknesses of the system over the years. He is the highest ranked high schooler, but it's a sample of only 4 and the last high school hitter the Brewers took panned out, so I can see why there'd be some optimism.
  19. I don't mean to offend anyone, but if Lawrie is so great, how did he last till #16? An 18 year old guy who is a no doubt major league caliber hitter and a likely catcher would seem a sure bet to go top 5 or at least top 10. I mean, I hope that the other 15 teams messed up, but Lawrie must have some weaknesses, right? All I'm saying is that I can see some people preferring to reserve judgment until he plays professionally. Sure, he got some hits against Hochevar (not that that was too hard this season http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif ), but I'm sure plenty of guys who will never see the major leagues get hits against major league pitchers every spring training. I don't see anything wrong with a Missouri attitude about draft picks.
  20. bk, I'm curious why you are now singing a different tune about Fryer than you have been about Lucroy all year. Fryer isn't the prospect Lucroy is, but to dismiss him out of hand while being quite bullish on Lucroy seems a bit strange. Lucroy is obviously better defensively, but we don't know that Fryer is so bad as to have no chance at sticking at C.
  21. Doesn't work for Mac yet. Too bad, I was interested in trying it.
  22. I'm talking about the 8th and 9th though, not the 5th and 6th. How many times has he left the guy who pitched the 8th in for the 9th if it's a save situation? Not many, at least that I recall.
  23. But aren't we kind of past worrying about that? McClung or DiFelice can be the long guy if needed. If you are arguing that a good reliever who is pitching well should be left in for more than one inning, I couldn't agree more, but that's not how Ned rolls (or roles http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif ).
  24. I wouldn't mind them trying to keep Erasmo Ramirez and Callix Crabbe around as well. Ramirez will probably want to try another org after not getting the call this September, I would think, but he seems like he could be useful in an emergency. I just kind of like Crabbe, though he hasn't ever really hit (2007 excepted). I still feel he could be a late blooming average starter, a la Eric Young.
  25. Carlos has walked 2 guys per 9 innings as a reliever this year. That is the best BB/9 of anybody in the pen. Even counting his time as a starter, he's walking 2.5 guys per 9, well below the league average of 3.4 per 9.
