  1. Kazmir for Zambrano wasn't pitching for hitting, Zambrano was a pitcher. An awful pitcher, but still a pitcher. That trade was so inexplicable, the only way it could possibly have worked out for the Mets was if Kazmir suffered a career-ending injury before he ever pitched for TB and even then I'd rather have taken the chance that he could make it back.
  2. This doesn't seem like a bad deal for Cleveland, at least considering the infamous Gagne deal. You don't like to give a guy as injury prone as Wood more than one year, but at least it's only 2. Last year was his first mostly healthy season since 2003 and he pitched 44 innings combined in 06-07. If I was Cleveland I might have preferred 1 year at $12-13 million with a team option for $10 million, but Wood probably insisted on that 2nd year being guaranteed.
  3. My sister went last year and she said it was just as much of a freak show as Hunter S. Thompson claimed. Sounded kinda fun http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif.
  4. I hate the fact that Suppan is still around and is likely forcing the team to deal far superior players who make less money. God, it's depressing to be a Brewer fan. A terrible pitcher who was obviously terrible even when he was signed is crippling the team. I mean, what's the point? The Brewers do everything right and come up with a nice nucleus of Braun, Fielder, Hardy, Hart and Gallardo and now those will be the only guys they have, and some of them will surely be dealt either this year or next year. What is the point of following a team that has no chance? I guess it's like being a Northwestern basketball fan. At least the Brewers have made the tournament 3 times, Northwestern has never made it.
  5. Putz has only had 2 good years out of 5. Still, I don't think it's a great trade but it's ok considering that Gutierrez is allegedly the best defensive outfielder in MLB, which Gwynn is most definitely not.
  6. I'd try to get Moyer and Johnson, just because they hopefully wouldn't cost as much as younger guys, possibly allowing the Brewers flexibility to make a move during the season if some other team regrets a recent FA signing. Lowe would obviously be a nice pickup, but I can't see the Brewers being in that mix when better, more glamorous teams are also interested. So, Randy was rumored to want about $3 million from AZ. I would offer him $6-7 million to see if they could get him on a one year deal, probably stopping if the bidding got past $8 million. 2 years/12 million or so seems fair for Moyer, maybe up to $15 million. Penny would probably be next on my list, assuming he was willing to take a one year, "make-good" contract (like what Millwood did with Cleveland a few years back). A rotation of Gallardo, Johnson, Bush, Moyer and Suppan would be OK. Certainly not great, but it would be serviceable and also allow future flexibility. I prefer that over betting $80 million on Perez becoming consistent or trying to outbid 10 teams for Lowe.
  7. Not a great analogy in this case because the fat girl is who everybody wants to take this year.
  8. I think the situation is probably less complicated than you are making it JohnBriggs. The Brewers probably feel that Hernandez is better than Kendall (they're right, imo) and they could dump Hall's contract in the process, which means that their sunk cost is only a $4 million dollar player (Kendall) rather than a $17 million player (Hall). If this went down, I would expect them to immediately try to dump Kendall. Kendall certainly isn't any kind of building block and he also didn't have a good enough year to guarantee his spot next year. No reason to not seek an upgrade.
  9. Great deal for the Mets. I have to say I'm a little disappointed considering the fact that the Brewers offered a similar contract to a much inferior Francisco last offseason. I know that signing K-Rod would have made little sense for the Brewers at this point, but if you are willing to go to $11 million per for Cordero, why not $12 million per for Rodriguez?
  10. I'm very glad Melvin's long-rumored Laird fascination didn't come to fruition.
  11. Yes. And I agree with casey and jordan that the problem is probably that you are clicking on the .dmg file. I made that same mistake a couple times when I first got OSX.
  12. Born and raised in Milwaukee, dad took me and siblings to games, played little league, always liked the stats (I got one of those giant phone book sized stat registers that they used to have when I was 7 and probably memorized every number in there). Pretty normal story.
  13. I don't like the move for Jenks if it involves a major piece of the current team. If it does, than you are just creating one hole to fill another. This team has no depth. Losing Torres hurt the pen, but losing Cameron might mean Tony Gwynn is starting, which would be the death knell for the team's 2009 chances. Losing CV would hurt too because he is still young and already pretty good, arguably their 2nd best pitcher as of now. I like Jenks, but his plummeting strikeout rate is a huge concern, we saw what happens when a closer can't strike anybody out with Kolb. Meanwhile, Jenks will surely get a nice chunk of change in arbitration, I'd rather just sign a guy than have to give up talent. There has to be somebody out there who is cheaper than K-Rod will be but still a good bet for success. Truthfully, Jenks' reputation as a less than reliable guy also makes me hesitant about making any deal for him where the Brewers give up a lot.
  14. I think that, like Ausmus and various other scrubs, we have the feeling that they should be automatic outs like they are usually, so when they do better than their career numbers (even if it's by a relatively small margin), it's magnified in a way that a good player's success against the team isn't.
  15. I'm happy that Russ is (seemingly) getting another chance at winning a job. It's weird that Melvin didn't try to keep him as a platoon third baseman, but maybe he hopes to end the platoon and get a full-time 3rd baseman. Good luck to Russ in Seattle.
  16. I wonder why Hanshin would want him.
  17. eh, they're not china dolls. The rest of us manage to walk around without breaking bones or tearing ligaments most of the time, why couldn't pro athletes do the same? Billingsley getting hurt is a freak accident, not a reason to not allow players to live or visit places where there is snow and ice.
  18. I've heard good things about this guy, but no specifics. The White Sox getting him had been rumored for awhile (a couple days, at least), though I hadn't realized he's only 19.
  19. I like the show a lot, but something has always seemed a little off about it to me, which has kept it from being on the same level as The Wire. Maybe it's that Vic is always able to see 10 steps ahead and get away with his crazy schemes (thus far, at least, though I agree that he'll probably end up dead). OTOH, the show is loosely based on the real Rampart CRASH unit of the LAPD and those guys got away with crazy stuff for 20 years, so maybe it's not unrealistic. I've been a little disappointed that they haven't had a movie star in the cast this year though. The last 3 seasons with Glenn Close, Forrest Whitaker, and Franka Potente were pretty cool. This season has been very exciting anyway. The scene that you mentioned where Vic was confessing to the ICE agent was just great TV. Do you think Dutch is really fired or did Claudette just say that out of anger and frustration?
  20. That's my take on it as well. If they felt they had the open roster spot, may as well protect him on the off chance he'll amount to something. You don't really lose much except for the ability to grab another waiver wire guy. I'm glad they protected him and I'm sure if he gets injured again they won't keep him on the 40 man next year. Might as well give him one more chance.
  21. Morally, it's gotta be E, at least if we are saying that the peace would be a type that people were in favor of rather than some sort of enforced, non-free will peace. Of course, with free will, there will never be peace, but we can dream.
  22. Interesting. I wonder if it's an attendance/publicity gimmick like the female minor league hockey goalies in the US or if the team actually likes her chances. I hope it's the latter.
  23. My top 10 (but not in order): The Simpsons Father Ted Squidbillies In Living Color Home Movies Seinfeld Futurama Frasier It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia Mr. Bean I tried to find room for Da Ali G Show, Fawlty Towers, and Lucky Louie, but I just can't see what I would remove. 3rd Rock From The Sun, NewsRadio, the British Office and Black Books are also shows I've enjoyed. Golden Girls and Martin were guilty pleasures. Shin Chan is crazy, but I've only seen it in the American dubs. I could remove In Living Color, I guess, because it tanked badly its last couple years, but I loved it too much in its prime to do that. Saturday Night Live hasn't been funny in 15 years, too long of a period of suckitude for me to overlook. Monty Python was too uneven. Same with Aqua Teen Hunger Force. Cheers was ok, but Frasier was better. I never really enjoyed the old shows like Leave It To Beaver, The Honeymooners, I Love Lucy, or the Andy Griffith Show. Sanford & Son was better than those, but not top ten to me.
  24. It was pretty funny, I enjoyed it. It could have been a little tighter, but that's not a big deal. Hope to see another one in the future.
  25. I would bring back Branyan and maybe Kapler. Obviously Sheets and Sabathia too, but I don't think that is likely. The rest of the guys I would move on from. I've seen enough Counsell and Gagne to last a lifetime. I hope they both go somewhere else. Mike Lamb is terrible, not sure why people want him back. Sure, he might bounce back somewhat from his terrible year last year, but so what? He's just not as good as Branyan, not even close. Resigning bad players like Counsell and Lamb and Gagne and Mota won't do anything except make it more difficult to sign good players. Better to use young players instead of them and use the monetary savings on actual good players.
