  1. The same could be asked about the Brewers bringing in Graffanino and Bell last season. A team still likes to appear to be competing even if they have no realistic shot. That said, this particular move does seem to make very little sense as WIlson and Izturis are basically the same guy. The only reason for it that I can think of is that WIlson won the 2004 Silver Slugger at SS and they wanted to complete the set so they brought in the 2004 Gold Glove winner at SS. Seriously though, I bet they just want him as a short-term guy at 3rd to fill in for Jose Bautista and then they'll use him as a utility guy.
  2. I don't get why the Brewers would be desperate for trash like Morris or Wright. They have guys better than them that aren't even in the rotation. Sure, it would be nice to get another pitcher, but not a guy like one of them. It would have to be an actual star-quality guy to really improve the team, imo, and I don't think any of them are available. I guess what I'm saying is that I don't think Wright is even better than Dessens and while Morris is probably better than Elmer, Gallardo and Villanueva and maybe Parra are better than Morris. So, the Brewers (imo) have 9 starters better than Wright and 7 or 8 better than Morris (unless we assume that Morris's resurrection is real). How would either of them help much? If anything, I'd rather see Villanueva and Parra added to the rotation at the expense of Suppan and Capuano. I think that they'd be much bigger upgrades than Wright or Morris would be. I know that there is no chance Suppan gets demoted from the rotation in the first year of a $40 million dollar deal, but I feel that Villanueva is significantly better than him and would be a nice upgrade in the rotation. Capuano isn't right right now, so I'd let him have another DL stint and try Parra out in the rotation for a couple turns. Bush appears to have straightened it out after a horrible start. Vargas is what he is- 5 innings/3runs. If anything, the Brewers should be trying to move a starter if the market for starters is so bad. They have depth and they may be able to take advantage of it at this deadline if some team gets desperate (like Cincy was for relievers last year). I'm just dreaming of 2008 when the rotation is (with ages next year): Sheets 29 Gallardo 22 Villanueva 24 Bush 28 Capuano 29 Suppan can close or something, although that wouldn't be the best use of him. He has a no-trade clause though, so the Brewers are probably stuck with him despite having 5 better starters. Depth is always nice, but Suppan just doesn't seem to fit this team past this season, imo. Vargas and Parra can be the long-men next year, that way the team is still covered in case of injury.
  3. I thought that this turned out to be an urban legend. Or is the debunking of the urban legend the urban legend? Oh what tangled webs...
  4. Pssh, I'll take that bet. Gadzuric is worlds better than Voskuhl despite what happened last year.
  5. Perhaps, but if a team has to play a guy like Voskuhl or Reiner for extended minutes, their season is ruined anyway. I'd rather they went with a young guy with some potential rather than a guy who is terrible, but not quite as terrible as Reiner.
  6. It's unfortunate that they couldn't find someone better. Voskuhl is one of the worst bigs in the league, but he's not the worst, so I guess it could be worse.
  7. so, anybody buy anything good yet? I haven't bit yet, though I was tempted by that gigantic flashlight last night. This home theater thing looks kind of interesting, but I don't need it plus I'm not sure what exactly it is.
  8. never mind, I saw the Dunn trade thread:
  9. so, how reliable is woot? I'm intrigued, but does the stuff actually come undamaged in the mail? Is it what it's supposed to be and does it work? Is card information secure? I'm just looking for a little reassurance.
  10. But you are ignoring what the Brewers could get for Jenkins. If they could get a starter for Geoff, they would basically be dealing 2 starters and an outfielder (Holliday doesn't need a platoon-mate so Mench is practically worthless in that situation) for an outfielder and a starter. That extra starter may or may not be worth the Jenkins to Holliday upgrade, but I could see such a thing being discussed.
  11. I used to work out with some of the Racine Raiders. Some of those guys were as cut as NFL players. A little intimidating when you are trying to bench and guys next to you are doing 300 no problem.
  12. Cool, I was unaware. I haven't been there for an extended period since 04.
  13. I'm going on a multi-city stadium trip this summer too, culminating at my brother-in-law's house in DC. DC is pretty weak, imo. The subway stops at like 12 which means you pretty much have to have your night wrapped up by then. OTOH, I'm sure there are some great clubs, but that's not really my thing.
  14. No, they played at the Bradley Center. I remember because the BC management didn't even bother to tell the Mustangs that they had scheduled renovations during the Mustangs season, which led the Mustangs to fold because they had no place to play. That tells you how much the BC valued the tenancy of even a very successful Arena League team.
  15. To be fair, Holliday also has 2 more years of arbitration after this year.
  16. I don't mean to be contrary, but why? Nobody had posted in this thread for 2 months.
  17. I don't know. It kind of seems almost fair, but I am very very very leery of Holliday because of his home/road split. I think guys do tend to hit better at home, but not to that extent. However, if they could then flip Jenkins for a guy comparable to Bush or Capuano, I wouldn't necessarily mind the deal. I doubt they would shake up the team that much with them in first though. Career splits for Matt Holliday: Home OBP/SLG/OPS: .422/.642/1.064 Away OBP/SLG/OPS: .321/.441/.762
  18. I wouldn't mind Gwynn and Weeks being sent back down to AAA once Billy is ready to come back. It sounds like they've decided against sending Rickie back down though. Plus, even if they do eventually bite the bullet, they might bring up a Rottino or a Dillon because otherwise they'd only have 3 bats (not including the backup catcher, who Yost is reluctant to use) on the bench, which is probably too few for the NL.
  19. Yeah, good luck with that.
  20. An indictment is a charge. The 5th amendment has been interpreted to mean that federal felony charges (which are what Vick is facing) must be issued by a grand jury, not just by a prosecutor. The grand jury decided that there was probable cause to believe a crime was committed and thus they returned an indictment against Vick (and 3 others), which means he is now charged with a crime. Anyway, my prediction is that Vick will cut a deal to rat out his friends/relatives in exchange for probation or a fine.
  21. what is a woot off in this context? (I assume you are talking about woot.com.)
  22. That is correct. Word is that the guy who made these comments is not actually in charge of the team, so this may all be just more of the same posturing from Yi's camp rather than some official word.
  23. The kid that plays Shaun isn't an actor, he's a surfer. That probably explains his poor acting. However, plenty of real 13 year old kids also seem pretty brain-dead so his lack of acting ability kind of fits the show (I always thought the same thing about AJ on the Sopranos). The actor who plays Kai is also a world-renowned surfer, btw. Anyway, about the last episode (spoilers), we find out that the Grandma accidentally(?) molested Butchie when he was 13. But I couldn't really figure out what John was saying about the lottery winner also being molested. Did he say that Butchie somehow helped that guy (I assume the corpse that John removed from room #24 was the molestor) molest the lottery winner? I think the show is really picking up steam, but I am also curious about where they could possibly be going with this. I don't think John turns out to be Jesus, just because I don't see it being that kind of meta-show. So far everything is centered on the Yost's and there hasn't been one character who is not intimately connected to that family (well, maybe the doctor). From what I understand about Jesus, he wasn't so specific in his interest.
  24. Yes, I hate this about the park as well. I wish they would have done a little more to either improve air flow or add a better cooling system (or be willing to turn it on, if they have one). It gets pretty unbearable in there with the roof closed, which is just unacceptable in my opinion, considering the expense and modernity of the stadium.
