  1. ...because players capable of a .350 OBP who play up the middle (infield or outfield) are useful bench options. (Just ask Craig Counsell.)
  2. Blip's Arcade (That one is only going to work for very niche audience....but if you're in that audience, it's too good not to suggest.)
  3. "A.W.E.S.O.M. - O" (South Park reference) SkyNet (...just don't let it get online) "Deus ex Machina" is a great name, though.
  4. C-Web and the infamous time out were the reason I won my first ever NCAA pool.
  5. Honest question: how well do you hit your driver? Your driver is likely going to be the least forgiving club in your bag (longest shaft + lowest degree of loft). If you have a hook or slice caused by the timing of your swing, those effects are often magnified with a driver. Personally, I tend to hit the 3 wood off the tee, and don't even pull the driver out of the bag unless I'm hitting my drives straight as an arrow. (FWIW, I ended last season as a 19 handicap.) As you're thinking about buying expensive woods, you can afford pricier 3- and 5- woods if you don't buy a driver (which is usually the most expensive of the three). Obviously, that decision is going to vary quite a bit based on how you golf. Personally, I'd rather sacrifice a few yards off the tee if it means staying on the fairway consistently. If you're more of a John Daly-type who counts on long drives, you're going to want to do the reverse, and put more $$$ into the driver. If you do head out to try drivers, make sure you try a variety of lofts. Most amateur golfers use a loft between 9 and 10.5 degrees on the driver; obviously, the lower the loft, the lower the ball flight, and the longer the roll you should get on the ground. Most fairway woods have consistent lofts(15 deg. for the 3, 18 for the 5, and 21 for a 7-wood), but "rescue"-style woods generally have higher lofts than their traditional counterparts.
  6. "Man in the Box" by Alice in Chains. (Aargh, 1 minute too slow! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif)
  7. One recommendation I would make would be to head out and try some clubs before you buy. I picked up an iron set back around Christmas time, and really appreciated the hitting center at Dick's Sporting goods; their system measured the angle and trajectory I was hitting the different makes of irons, giving me a basis for comparison. (In other words, do I hit the ball better with a more expensive make of irons.) Out of the clubs I tried on the lower end of the spectrum, I was getting the best distance out of the low-end Taylor Made set...the least expensive of the iron sets I tried out. (I'm the reverse of most golfers, FWIW, I hit my woods much better than I do my irons. I keep a 7-Wood in my bag to avoid having to go to my irons until I'm about 150-160 yards from the hole.)
  8. Can't believe that I forgot to mention Season 1 of Sam & Max. Haven't played it myself yet, but I have fond memories of Sam & Max Hit the Road. The new season is available on GameTap, but you can buy the previous season in stores. (The game releases as episodic content, meaning a new 'episode' comes out every few weeks / months. This is something the gaming industry has expressed a good deal of interest in, but the Sam & Max development team is the only software developer that I know of that actually seems able to do it.)
  9. ...that power inverter is somewhat tempting. The woot off has reminded me of a question I've been meaning to ask: how easy / expensive are map updates for GPS navigation units? I'd assume that it varies by company. (I have a relative paranoia about missing a court hearing out in the country because I took a wrong turn.) Given the way that the roads in parts of the state are changing (e.g. Marquette Interchange), I know that I'd want to update the maps in a year or two....so I know updates are a factor in my decision.
  10. Personally, I use iTunes....but then again I have an iPod, and love iTunes for podcasting. If I were just starting d/l -ing music today, I'd probably lean towards Amazon.com's online music store. Song prices vary between $.89 and .99 (same as iTunes), they're .mp3's (which will play on virtually everything), and are encoded at a higher bitrate (256 Kbps) than most of the iTunes offerings.
  11. If you've already beaten Portal....chances are you already have Team Fortress 2. (I play it on PS3, since my PC's not nearly good enough to really game on.) I'm not big on FPS's personally, but I really enjoyed this one.
  12. There's a typo in one of the questions (# 10, I think....I already sent it in, so I can't check.) You meant to write "purchased an item," but you wrote out "purchase and item." Since they're both real words, I'm sure your spell-checker missed it.
  13. Pitching on consecutive days in pressure situations certainly won't adversely affect a pitcher with as dependable an arm as Kerry Wood. On the other hand, Wood as the closer also means that the Cubs can pitch their best reliever, Marmol (assuming he can repeat his '07 season), in critical game situations prior to the 9th inning, which would work to their benefit. Still, I tend to think that Wood walks too many batters (over 4 BB/9IP) for me to be comfortable with him locking up a close game. Be it for inconsistency or for injury, I doubt he'll still be the closer by September.
  14. Chad Fox had it twice. From today's J-S Online article: It's rare for a pitcher to need a second "Tommy John" surgery, and also rare for one to return to top form afterward. Pitchers such as Chad Fox, Darren Dreifort and Steve Ontiveros were among those who had multiple elbow reconstructions. Hearing the news about Cappy's injury makes me wonder whether he'll have a place with the team after 11 months of rehab.
  15. That was my thought as well....but it doesn't mesh with Ben's rationale to Michael about his not killing people. Not that that's entirely consistent itself (as he left Locke to die after shooting him....maybe he knew that the Island wouldn't let JL die?). That being said, if it was another team from the Widmore boat....how did they get to the island? We've only seen one helicopter / pilot. (Speaking of whom, does anyone else think that Mr. Widmore put the pilot on the away team so that he would be killed, thus removing the loose end to the false 815?) So glad I finally got caught up with this show, even though there's a month until the next new show!
  16. I love watching Stiemsma hit the 10 foot "jumper." If the other team wants to give him an open shot, he can hit that.
  17. USC is not a tall team; I'm surprised how lopsided the rebounding numbers are (33-18).
  18. 1. Eleven seed (St. Joe's) 2. Six seed (Purdue) 3. Second round (lose to Stanford) 4. Sweet Sixteen (lose to Georgetown....setting expectations low, as I see this game as a coin-flip) 5. UNC, Kansas, Texas, UCLA 6. Bruins
  19. I only know of 3 online games for the Wii: -Super Smash Bros. Brawl (which I'd wholeheartedly recommend) -Super Mario Strikers -Pokemon Battle Revolution (I could try to preach the virtues of Pokemon as a surprisingly-deep turn based strategy game, but if you're not already both playing the franchise on the DS....I doubt this one will appeal to you.) I don't think the EA sports games have online multiplayer (yet); someone feel free to add any other online Wii games. Edit: I should probably mention that Mario Kart Wii is coming out next month (but also uses the same canned phrases / no voice chat system that Brawl does)
  20. "In Part 1, we'll look at players who threw a large enough sample at Triple-A or in the majors last year. In Part 2, we'll look at the Double-A guys." I'm guessing that Manny's injury history, and/or limited time in AAA last season is what's keeping him out of the article.
  21. Brian's right about CableCARD. Basically, a CableCARD is a physical computer card that fits into your device (possibly a PC, but more often your HDTV or TiVo), and allows it to access the analog and digital channels available through your Cable TV subscription. It's a stand-in for your digital cable box (assuming you have one). Most of the HD Tuner cards that are available for your PC are over-the-air tuners. I've seen a few lately which are able to decode unscrambled digital cable (what's known as a "QAM Tuner" -- that same thing I always advocate that HDTV buyers look for). If you just want to watch FSN Wisconsin, any TV capture card with a QAM tuner will do that and more (you should be able to access your local broadcast HD channels via your cable connection, and possibly other channels as well). If you want to watch FSN HD (or any on-demand or non-broadcast HD stations, like ESPN HD, Discovery HD, or Food Network HD) on your computer, you're going to need some sort of a device that is compatible with CableCARD.
  22. I'm glad to hear that D-Bow has greater control and movement on the fastball. That said, most of his problems last year started from his inability to throw his breaking pitch for strikes....forcing him to rely only on the heater. It's the secondary pitch that Derrick needs to work on, IMO.
  23. I understand your general point, but the number of innings is only half of the problem. You're not taking pitch count into consideration. If Parra is limited to 90-100 pitches per appearance....and has to burn through those pitches in 5 innings, it puts additional stress on the bullpen. Granted, guys like Bush and Vargas have had their share of short starts, but a manager is much more likely to leave a veteran in there to 'take one for the team' than a younger player with upside whose confidence is more likely to be shaken by getting cuffed around.
  24. That's a bit of a Catch-22 as far as I'm concerned. Ned Yost tends to only switch to the #2 catcher (in any given game) because of an injury. For that reason, Rottino's versatility is largely negated if he's the #2. IMO, the only way Vinny makes the 25-man roster is as a utility player / #3 catcher.
  25. Another rough first inning for Dave Bush. Given the mention in the broadcast, I can't help but wonder if the lack of a pre-game routine somehow contributes to his not being sharp at the start of the game. (Probably not....but it does sound good.)
