  1. Of course he was flattered....it drove up his asking price to the team he actually wanted to play for. That said, it's nice to hear good players even suggest they'd want to play in Milwaukee.
  2. http://www.mediocreminds.com/03q3/misc/pcs/mr_miyagi.jpg Must learn focus.... focus on college pitching, Melvin-san.
  3. I'm actually not even that hungry, but for some reason, a cheese sandwich sounds really good right now. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/happy.gif
  4. Think Kinney can give us a quality start from out of the bullpen? We might need six good innings at this rate. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif
  5. Just a little tidbit from Peter Gammons' latest ESPN column:
  6. ...and that's why he saved the Brewerfan.net draft coverage plug until the tenth inning. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  7. Anyone else find themselves afraid to change what they were doing in some way because of Sheet's perfect game attempt? I started listening to the radio broadcast while watching the FSN telecast in an attempt to hear Powell talk about the draft. In the sixth, I caught myself being worried to change over to the FSN audio....since I didn't want to break with what I've been doing because of how Sheets was pitching. In retrospect, it's one of the more pathetic things I think I've done today. But if it had worked... http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/roll.gif
  8. I blame BA for not updating their info on Arizona-based prospects, then. Them, and the Rockies, for not having the information somewhere on their site that I could find in a minute or two's search. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  9. If there's one series where I think the Brewers have a reason to put Bill Hall into the lineup....it's the one when they have a DH. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  10. Round 50 - Chad Miller, 1b, Chandler-Gilbert CC http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/tongue.gif
  11. Did I miss someone, or did the Brewers draft their first player from Chandler-Gilbert CC?
  12. At some point, I'm wondering if the Brewers would take a chance on Eric Young, Jr. He was drafted in the 30th round by Colorado last year as a DFE, but didn't sign.
  13. No BA notes on Picks # 35, #36, or # 37. From now on, I'll only post when there is info on the player.
  14. Dipping into the BA notes once again: Skipping the round 32 pick from Davis, CA (since he's not listed in BA) Also no info on pick # 33 from Arizona. Pick # 34:
  15. BA note on latest pick: # 8 prospect in state of New York.
  16. No BA info on Prior (or Patterson), but one note on Prettyman (# 59 prospect in SoCal): Colby: Thanks for letting me know that I was aware of the process at one point; I probably asked something similar last year. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/embarassed.gif
  17. BA note on Dustin Timm (# 3 prospect in Nebraska): His rights can be controlled...as in DFE? I didn't think you could do that with players from 4-year colleges.
  18. Looks like another tough sign, according to BA. #14 prospect in the state of Texas, and a predicted 2nd - 5th round pick based on talent (not signability).
  19. No BA profile on Kretzschmar, but he was listed as the #90 player in Southern California. Just a short note on Festa, the # 50 SoCal prospect: I have to believe the Brewers can sign him. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif Another player...another short note from BA on Delgado (the # 8 PR prospect):
  20. A tough sign if ever there was one, according to BA:
  21. I think this is the name I heard for pick # 19: The Brewers wanted him listed as LF, but I'm pretty sure it was Brady. No info on Jose Garcia, the Iowa / CC player the Brewers took with their 20th pick.
  22. I had posted this link before the draft, but I wasn't sure anyone saw it...so I'll post it here again. Neyer Fill-in column: college v. hs pitchers The article uses Win Shares, which I will fully admit having no idea how to calculate, but I thought that one part of the article was interesting. When looking at when the college and HS pitchers were drafted, the top 3 HS pitchers drafted averaged just as many win shares over their career as the average of the top 6 college pitchers, and more than numbers 4-to-6 averaged. Considering that the Brewers had the option between the first HS pick, and the 4th college pick, there isn't all that much separating the choices. Admittedly, there is more risk with a HS player in terms of ever making the major leagues....but in this situation, it at least appears as if the potential payoff balances the risk. I don't blame people for disliking the pick (heck, I'd still rather have Kyle Sleeth than Rickie Weeks, but I'm guessing I'm in the minority there). Considering how snake-bit the Brewers have been by prep pitching, it's hard to see the upside in players like Rogers....let's just hope he beats the odds.
  23. NastyTwig- News story from "The Olympian" on M's pitching prospect. Google is great for questions like this one. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  24. I gave them a 'B' as well. I can't give them an 'A,' since they didn't take the players that I wanted (Bailey & Jaramillo....as the draft turned out) in the early rounds, although they did nab the player I wanted in Baker. Admittedly, I'd feel better about this draft crop if it didn't have so many high schoolers, but everything I've heard seems to suggest that Milwaukee did a good job. Now they just have to sign them all. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/happy.gif I'd say 'B+' but that wasn't an option.
  25. This link is said to be for subscribers only, but it actually still has 2003 data. www.baseballamerica.com/cgi-bin/03draftdb_rnd.cgi?rnd=12 Not a lot of 12th rounders signed last year, apparently. That said, it appears as though the two players with leverage (1 HS, 1 DFE) signed for nearly twice as much as the two college players. #344 - Matt Pulley, 3b (HS) - $65,000 #350 - Jayson Rodriguez, rhp (CC) - $60,000 #351 - James Paduch, rhp (college) - $30,000 #353 - Joe Mazzuca, ss (college) - $25,000 Other notes: -Apparently, only one of the players in the 13th round signed, but he did so for ~ second round money ($750,000) -Bonuses varied greatly between the 4 11th rounders who signed, from $7,500 (Oakland) to $140,000 (Anaheim)....so the team that drafted the player may be a factor as well.
