  1. Clemens isn't coming up here now. He's already scheduled some charity golf tournament or something down in Houston, I'm sure. The Brewers will win the series, and the Astros will live to fight another day. Fun division race, this is.
  2. I've created a monster. Does Overbay lead the league in outs as a result of fielder's choices or what?
  3. Kind off-topic, but watching the Twins game... What doesn't Bobby Abreu do? Man, I'd like to have him.
  4. I heard a rumor around these parts (aka St. Paul) that the Twins weren't allowed to increase their payroll at all this season because of all the early draft picks. So, I'm not surprised that they have signed these guys already, and I won't be surprised when they sign all their top 10 picks. When Terry Ryan has money with which to work, he uses it all.
  5. The Brewers are turning a corner offensively, I think. I tried to tell ya'll during the 1-0 game, but no one would listen.
  6. I think Melvin was turned on by the word "Texeira." Melvin: "Hey, I see Texeira is available. He's really good with the bat. I thought I drafted him already, though." Jack Z.: "No, this is a different Texeira. He's a pitcher." Melvin: "I know he can pitch, but he's a great third baseman. But I thought I drafted him already." Jack Z.: "This is not Mark Texeria." Melvin: "Doesn't he play for Georgia Tech?" Jack Z.: "No, he plays in Hawaii." Melvin: "Hawaii isn't in Georgia." Jack Z.: "..." Melvin: "So... why don't we draft him? We need a third baseman." Jack Z.: "Yes." Melvin: "Is he Canadian too? That would be great." Jack Z.: "Sure, why not. If we draft him, can you go get me some pizza? There's this great place in Illinois."
  7. how often will we find out when someone signs? Well, someone has to tell us. Sometimes we just get it from another news source, sometimes one of our people emails us about it, or sometimes brewcru stops by the board and tells us something. As soon as we know, everyone else knows. Is Baker the only one signed? In all likelyhood, no. We just haven't recieved confirmation on anyone else yet. High school kids drafted (like Yo Gallardo) usually take a little longer. I'd guess it'll be another week before we sign him.

  10. Want to go ahead and make a similar prediction for Mister Rogers? He'll continue to be in syndication on PBS for many years, but something tells me he won't be playing much baseball from here on out. Oh... The Lobster. These predictions only work when I don't think about them... Mark Rogers will be signed on Wednesday. Take it to the bank.
  11. The Brewers go for the sweep in this third and final game of their interleague series with the Anaheim Angels. Wes Obermueller (3-2, 6.80) takes the hill for the Crew and will continue to try and prove he deserves to hold onto a rotation spot. With a collective team ERA now below 4.00, Obermueller is the exception to the rule with the Brewers, and he might be in the bullpen quicker than you'd think. He hooks up with Angels starter and Minnesota native Aaron Sele (4-0, 3.26), who is off to a fine start after a hellish 2003 season. If the Brewers climb back to 3 games above .500 with a win this evening, it'll be the first time they will have been 3 games over this late in the season since June 25th, 2001. They are 3.5 games behind first-place Cincinnati, and head home to Milwaukee after the game to begin a 14 day, 12 game, 4 team homestand at Miller Park. Game time is at 10:00 p.m. CST. I'm not even going to bother linking to another site's preview because it won't be as cool as getting to read the Daily Brew.
  12. Courtesy of the Magic 8 Ball himself, the first official signee that we know about: The 4th rounder from Rice, RHP Josh Baker. Baker has been assigned to Helena. Patrick's scouting report, courtesy of THE brewerfan.net: Baker's name often gets lost when talking about Rice pitchers. Baker started his collegiate career at Alabama, but then transferred after his freshman year. He comes from an extremely athletic family as his father played in the NFL, his uncle played in the Major Leagues while his brother-in-law is Astros outfielder Lance Berkman. At 6'5", 210 pounds Baker has the perfect body for a pitcher. He went 8-0 as a sophomore for Rice, and as a junior he has assumed the role as spot starter & long reliever. He doesn't have the pure stuff of any of his 3 more heralded teammates, but he throws in the 89-91 range with a good slider. He struggles with control at times, but when he's on he can be dominant.
  13. Baker is in the bag. Off to Helena for him Like I was saying... http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Can you give us a head's up on anyone else?
  14. Even if Baker prefers Houston and even if he thinks he'll go in the first few rounds next year (which is up for debate), the Brewers have a good chunk of money to spend this year. They went right out and said that a large number of the picks will be DFEers (including all seven Canadians), so they may just be looking to sign 15 or so guys right now. The numbers are probably a little different, but assuming they have about the same budget as last year, they don't have to pay out the same amount of ching to their #1 pick (2nd overall vs. 5th overall), and they may well sign 10 less guys before the season starts. I would say that the Brewers have enough money for Baker, and I'd guesstimate the odds of them signing him closer to 8 or 9 in 10. The Brewers have a history of signing the large majority of their first 10 picks under Jack Z, and there is no reason to think this year will be significantly different. They signed 10/10 from 2003, 8/10 from 2002 (Page 5th, Kahn 8th), 10/10 from 2001, and 10/10 from 2000 (lost 2nd rounder for Jose K, signed Corey Hart 11th round). That's 38/40. The two that didn't sign, Page and Kahn, might have been the two toughest signs out of that group of 40, with Page's strong commitment in two sports to UCLA, and with Kahn's agent being Boras or someone of that ilk, IIRC. Baker shouldn't be nearly as tough. In short, yes, I think he will sign, and sign soon at that.
  15. Yah, they almost field a Helena team right now, so I'm not really worried about that aspect. It's just wierd... I thought that they usually have announced a few en masse signing by a few days after the draft.

  17. Nothing on anyone yet... weird. Pionner League Opening Day is only 8 days away. I know we're not going after the Canadians, but someone should be signing here pretty quick.
  18. Yah, I just looked it up on baseball-reference. Wow, that guy was overrated. It's all coming back.
  19. Cabrera L(3-5) I'll cop to not remembering who that is.
  20. I believe it was I yesterday who ate a cheese sandwich and proclaimed that yesterday's game was rock-bottom catharsis for the players and would lead to a huge scoring binge. The cheese doesn't lie. Try to find that I didn't say that in that thread.
  21. By tomorrow morning, 600+ posts. Wowsa. Time for a cheese sandwich, and then time for bed. Cheddar on toasted french bread, baby. It's been real.
  22. All hell has broken loose... MB is talking crap. Cheese sandwiches for all!
  23. Ah crap, I was hoping Spivey would K. Then we could have the record all to ourselves.
  24. Wake up Kolb! Why won't it let me swear? @#%$!
