  1. ooo, early start for them too. don't see a lot of noon games in CST. lets go travis wood.
  2. can't wait for this game. a) super excited to see wily vs. gio b) i'll have something to watch instead of the badgers
  3. I don't think they scouted him very much, but I definitely remember quotes about Counsell contributing reports and such after watching video of Aoki. I think what little scouting was done on him was mostly from Counsell
  4. i feel like i think this after every gif you post...but that might be the best one yet.
  5. He's also a guy with a significant history of arm trouble. I have no problem with how they are handling him. If you want to point to the moment they "gave up" its when they traded Greinke. agreed. It will be interesting to see what happens with Fiers though. They could be 5 games back going into the series in St Louis, in which Fiers is supposed to pitch game 2. Would be tough to shut him down there and throw Thornburg or someone else in.
  6. get it to within 5 before the series in st louis and i think it's worth talking about. Finish the sweep today and have strasburg help us pick up a game, win 3 of 4 in miami, cards lose 2 of 3 to the mets somehow.....and there the crew is 5 back with gallardo, fiers, and marcum going in st louis. That's a pretty tall order to start off with (let alone making up 5 more games and expecting to win in St Louis)....but hey, this IS the optimism thread.
  7. i know we all know how awesome Braun is....but seriously, his HR chart is a thing of beauty to look at. It's still missing the one from today, but I think you can put that one right on top of the 95 degree, 450' one already there. http://hittrackeronline.com/parks/Braun_Ryan_2012_scatter.jpg
  8. my preferred not the father dance: http://clutch.mtv.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/slapstick.gif but they're all deadly. glad I could assist in hijacking a thread. back on topic: Ben Sheets is cool. I've been the proud owner of a Braves Sheets shirsey for about a month now. Very hopeful/excited to go see him pitch in the playoffs.
  9. But it does. http://i.imgur.com/hNYt5.gif not the father!!!!
  10. does somebody (and I feel like you do it often, I could be very very wrong though) have to post this every time braun goes more than 10 at bats without a hit? he's awesome, but he's still human.
  11. To be fair, I'm pretty sure that was only one guy ("ask for Trout or tell them to get bent" was his preference, i believe), although he was quite vocal about it.
  12. There are also a number of people (not saying you personally) saying we need to trade Ramirez as a salary dump. Posts a week ago along the lines of "if we can get anything for that salary, take it". Essentially saying the team NEEDS to trade Ramirez. I think those are the posts that upset the people who say keep Ramirez.....just like the posts that say there's no reason to trade Ramirez upset those in the pro-trade camp. And the reality is somewhere in between. Personally, I think the best approach is to wait and see what happens in the offseason. If the bullpen is fixed (which is the easiest part of a team to fix. but because bullpens are such a crapshoot, there's really no way to know until the season is underway), I don't think the 2013 team is that far off from competing for the division. It really depends on how the rotation shakes out. So see how the offseason is going, take calls for Aramis....and if the rotation isn't shaping up how you want it, pull the trigger if you get a good deal. The team still has prospects coming up, and will be set up to succeed in 2014 if enough of the pitching prospects pan out. They're not sacrificing the future and going "all-in" again by not trading Ramirez/Hart. They can hope that half of the things that went so wrong this year go right next year and they make a playoff run, while still being set up well in the rotation for 2014.
  13. All al teams have a shot before the brewers. And I would think pretty much every team would claim him. false. claims go in order of worst to best record, so if the brewers are the worst-record team to claim Sheilds, they'd be the only team to negotiate a trade with Tampa Bay. He's actually correct. It does go in order of worst-record, but AL teams have priority for AL players, and NL teams for NL players. So Shields would need to clear the entire AL, as well as the Astros, Cubs, Rockies, Padres and whoever else is worse than them in the NL. So they'd be around 20th in the waiver order for an AL player.
  14. I would imagine it would be the other narron or kranitz. I think it would have to be someone who is always in the dugout....Sedar couldn't really (well I guess he could) put up a pinch hitter from 3rd base.
  15. Right. But if you're not getting a desperate offer from a team (and I have no idea what, if anything, has been discussed by the Brewers FO) then there's no deal to be made. If a team does that, by all means take the offer....but they don't NEED to trade him just to dump the salary. If the best offer isn't anything different than could be had in the offseason, there's no point.
  16. I have zero problem paying Ramirez $10M next year. There's a pretty good chance he outperforms that. His 2014 $$ is probably too high, and definitely is when you factor in the buyout. He's still a good baseball player. If it was just a salary dump, than it can be just a salary dump next year too. Again, I don't have a problem with trading him...but I don't see the urgency nor do I think a trade right now should be looked at as a salary dump. It should be to get better players. If the offers aren't great, you can wait until the offseason.
  17. I don't think it would. But if the offers are only OK (i.e. they feel like it's something they could also get in the offseason for him), then they'll wait to see what happens in free agency. And I don't mean delusions about signing Greinke, just the team/rotation they can put together in the offseason and how competitive it can be for 2013.
  18. He's only owed $10M next year. He has an .845 OPS which is what was expected....and there's always a purpose on a team for a hitter like that. If the team thinks they can compete next year, which looks unlikely....but with a fixed bullpen (very doable) they're not THAT far away, they can see what happens in the offseason in regards to the rotation. I don't think they're ready to punt on 2013 yet, and if that's the case Ramirez is a very solid and affordable piece to that team. Not saying they can't trade him, just that they don't NEED to. If someone puts together a great offer, then you take it.
  19. I can't imagine one of Bauer/Skaggs/Bradley would be available for Hart. But they do have good pitching beyond that, as well as a good 3B prospect in Matt Davidson.
  20. Interesting. I don't really understand why Arizona would have interest in Hart, unless they have something in the works to move Upton. But they're pretty set at corner outfield with Upton and Kubel, and Goldschmidt has been pretty awesome at first.
  21. The Pirates bullpen is also really really deep. Between Hanrahan, Grilli, Hughes, and Juan Cruz coming back, they can get by without Lincoln. I know it's hard to say this as a brewer fan right now, but bullpen pieces are very replaceable. Whereas Travis Snider has struggled a lot at the major league level, but he debuted as the youngest player in the league (he's still just 24) and is a former top 10 prospect with some major power. He's been mashing (again) in AAA this year, and supposedly he's made some mechanical adjustments as well as fully recovered from a wrist injury. It's basically one GM hoping he's turned that corner (and only sacrificing a RP to do so), which isn't a ridiculous thought about a 24 year old player, vs. the other GM saying he hasn't and won't. I think its a great trade/gamble by the pirates. Gamble probably isn't even the right word, because middle relievers have such low value (again, very difficult to say as a brewer fan right now. but it's the truth)
  22. I can't imagine the Braves are very optimistic about Vizcaino anymore after his Tommy John if they traded him for Reed Johnson. I would imagine Maholm is the bigger piece of the trade here. Your point is still probably correct, although I think it's a very good risk for the Cubs to take. Pre-surgery Vizcaino was looked at as a better prospect than Delgado.
  23. did axford chop all his hair off? don't have the sound on and I thought I caught a glimpse of it in the bullpen.
