  1. are you suggesting the brewers wouldn't have thoroughly scouted whoever they're trading for? just going with a guy "because he was ranked #79 on some list"?
  2. I'll admit to knowing nothing outside this thread about Delgado, but ever since the Jose Capellan experiment, I've been wary of any pitching prospect the Braves are willing to give up. Exactly. Outside of Wainwright and Jason Schmidt I can't think of one pitcher that the Braves surrendered in a deal that turned out to be pretty good for the long haul (actually I think there is another that is slipping my mind right now), and the Braves have moved a TON of young pitching over the past 20 years. The Braves current GM (Frank Wren) didn't trade either of those guys. But as we've mentioned, he did trade Neftali Feliz and Matt Harrison.
  3. So ignore his success so far at the MLB level in spite of those control issues. A guy like Delgado would not be my ideal centerpiece in a Greinke trade, but I would have taken it. I think he has more value than the draft pick from Greinke walking. I would not want Doug Melvin to make that trade today, but if it was July 31 and it was the best offer he had seen (and Greinke hadn't resigned obviously) then yes I would take it. Ideally with a few other pieces thrown in. Even if Delgado doesn't develop into a superstar (or a #2 starter, which seems to be his ceiling), there is a lot of value in a guy getting paid very little putting up an ERA around 4....which is what he has done so far.
  4. Do you consider (or did you about 2 months ago before they each had a chance to debut) Peralta, Thornburg, and to a lesser extent Fiers prospects? Because Delgado is younger than each of them. And has made 24 MLB starts. And his ERA is under 4 in those starts. His fastball averages 92, which I would agree isn't a "fireballer", but it is still good velocity. And he has over 7 K/9 so far this year, which isn't a stellar number but it shows he can miss bats. I will agree the walks could be a problem, but again he is 22. If he NEVER improves from the pitcher he is right now (unlikely for a 22 year old), then the cubs just got a guy who can put up an ERA of 4 for very cheap for the next 5-6 years. And that's if he, at the age of 22, does not improve. I do not believe I have read one person declare this "the best trade ever". But if we want to get into that discussion, as well as one about "is the braves GM that dumb?" perhaps we should look at the last time he rented a player for half a season.
  5. Based on your posts you're unimpressed with every prospect. also this.
  6. yes, a 22 year old with an MLB ERA under 4 (24 starts) is pretty unimpressive. He's not an ace, but he will be a very good pitcher for very cheap in Chicago. It's a great trade for them.
  7. http://i.imgur.com/QjwFF.gif Your ability to capture my exact reaction to posts in GIF form is just astonishing
  8. If they do go on a run and decide to become buyers, I really don't think they'll make a huge splash for a guy like Hamels or any rental. I think they make smaller trades to shore up the bullpen/bench and try to avoid dealing any of their best prospects. Escobar is appealing because he fills a need for this season, and is very reasonably controlled through 2015. He has his own thread where this has been discussed....but if the Brewers are going to trade off prospects and buy, he's a good guy to target for that reason. I think it would take a lot to get him though. Another idea as far as SS (though this is a rental) would be Marco Scutaro. The Rockies aren't going anywhere this season, so he's definitely available. He's a career .270/.340/.390 hitter and plays an average SS. Lots of teams could be buying and need infielders so the price might get a little too high for a rental, but he's a guy to look at if the Brewers get hot and decide to buy.
  9. Exactly, I'm not understanding this. If they don't have to cover any portion of his contract, they are essentially "buying" whoever they trade for for the $3 million or whatever they've already paid to ARam. To be able to get some high-ceiling prospect for basically nothing would be great. I don't care about mediocre major league ready pitching. Major league pitching does not necessarily mean a mediocre veteran. Like others have mentioned it could be a packagr built around a guy like eovaldi (comparable to guys in our AA/AAA right now). Also, a big reason to trade Ramirez is to get out from underneath his contract, so I would think they're not going to bring in a post arbitration veteran with a bigger contract. I don't ever like limiting trade options, but like someone said "major league pitching" can mean a lot of things.
  10. I'm watching w the sound off (so i havent heard any discussion), but if Ramirez fields that ball cleanly did he have a play? Seemed like he would have to me, but I could very well be wrong. Either way, still plenty of blame for ax. No excuse to walk Schumacher after
  11. Ax certainly hasn't looked good. But he should have been out of the inning
  12. That's exactly what I was thinking, it's really the only explanation that makes some sense. And slightly related to that, I could see a situation where they sweep stl and end up pitching him against Cincinnati anyway. Probably wishful thinking though (both sweeping STL and wanting to see Greinke pitch again)
  13. i am so upset i am going to be out of town this sunday. my ben sheets shirsey has just been burning a hole in my dresser. hopefully he pitches well so i'll have plenty of chances to see him.
  14. because youre talking about trading two guys for nothing?
  15. Well then complain about it in 2 or 3 weeks if he's still in the bullpen (and the team is still treading water). Like many have said there's no reason he can't move to the rotation after trading a starting pitcher. Which would leave him with a good chance to hit 150-160 innings. He may need a few AFL starts to get there, but a few weeks in the bullpen aren't going to ruin him. And maybe he thrives there and the team turns it around (Chris sale has been mentioned a few times in this thread) I just don't think it's a big deal until its after the deadline and he's still in the bullpen (unless he looks great and the team is on a tear)
  16. I also think (and hope) it means Gooden is gone, but it doesn't mean they can't sign a wing player. They still have the MLE to look at a wing player. Of course there aren't any very good ones out there (I think Randy Foye has been mentioned a few times), so a combo of Gooden and Udoh or Sanders might be necessary to get the best player they can into the fold. If they wanted to trade just Gooden, they could probably look at a guy like Tayshaun Prince or Josh Childress. I don't really care for either of those guys or their contracts (which are essentially the same as Gooden's), but they probably fill a bigger need than Gooden does with the # of PFs on the roster. They could also decide to give Harris a lot of time at the 3. And back to the Ersan contract, it sounds like the 5th year is an option year. Details haven't been released (or at least I haven't seen them yet), but that makes it more like a 4/$36 million contract. Which is still a little high, but it looks a lot more team friendly. And if that fifth year is used, it will probably be a great value because Ersan has continued to produce throughout the contract.
  17. Yea, i was thinking he should throw at someone in the first AB. Preferably Holbrook.
  18. I don't think it's really a bad deal money wise (I think Ersan can be a very good third option, and those guys make ~9 million), but I just don't like it for the bucks. I don't like the idea of sacrificing any long term flexibility for a good but not great player. I'll withhold judgement until I see if any more moves are made to clear up the PF position, as well as to see the final contract details (maybe there are some option years). I wouldn't have made the move, but I don't think it's bad. Ersan is 25 so it's for his prime years. Even if he regresses a little from the end of last season (and his 3 pt shooting pretty much has to), he still does a lot of things very well. At 25 I don't think he's going to fall off a cliff any time soon, so his contract is going to stay reasonable (and therefore tradeable).
  19. just in case everyone was looking for someone to blame for their blood pressure spike the past hour or so.
