    Is there any way the Friars would offer him arbitration if we didn't sign him before the arby date? They were offering $4mil+incentives, and it has long been rumored that they are attempting to cut payroll through every means necessary. They can't theoretically cut his salary (and more likely, he'd get a raise if they offered arbitration, given the current market for closers). Some may say he would decline out of loyalty, but this is a fiefdom that for all intents and purposes, excommunicated its white knight. So he won't be saving any damsels, or, more precisely, he won't save the owner from his damsel's evil clutches as she attempts her money grab. As for his value to the Brewers, if we don't sign CC, I would rather we spend $8mil per year over two years for a HOFer than 150% of that over twice as many years for a glorified closer, whether it be the Dumpster or Lowe, or Lyon or Fuentes. The former shortstop is an even bigger fascist now than he's been in years.

    I would be interested in Jordan Zimmerman, as he went to UW-W, but not for Prince. They really don't have anything that matches up well with us, to fill the void left by the Regal One's absence. No thanks.

    D-Lee the last two years. Vernon Wells every other year. Andruw Jones...last year. Rollins this year. And, to be honest, Ryan Braun this year.

    Well just reported on ESPN's ticker....Padres withdraw offer to Hoffman. Perhaps, Chase Headley? Get him out of the Dog Food Isle (as in Petco is more of an Isle than Aisle).

    Is there any chance that we may be able to pick up Heath Bell? I know most say he is the heir to Trevor Hoffman but Hoffman is going to be closing again next year and it doesn't look like they will even be contending in 2010 so a good closer would be a luxury for them even then, if he is even effective as a closer.

    Given that the Power 50 differs from your own opinion, how would you rank our three "catchers" in regards to value to the organization? I seem to be a bit higher on Salome than most and would put him in front of Lucroy. The problem comes with Lawrie vs. Salome. Both hae big questions about their defense with nary a question about their bat, unless the question is ceiling. This probably deserves its own thread, but I am just curious about your own opinion on the matter. Does Lawrie's ultimate ceiling....whatever it may be, trump what Salome did this year, despite the questions regarding Salome's ability to field his only possible NL position?

    Given their contract situations, I would think Felix would be more attainable for Prince, though he would also be the harder target given their talent levels. Nothing against Morrow but King Felix is a once-in-a-generation talent, much like our Regal One.

    For some reason, Bogut plays down to his competition. He's a finesse banger in the body of a power post player. He's the white Oden, except with better touch and nowhere near the defensive anticipation. As for Luc Alphabet, I would compare him more to a Shane Battier, not style but substance. Both fell in their respective drafts because of their experience and the fact that they were on the national scene for so long, people uber-dissected them. He is what we always hoped Dez would become, though he's not the athlete of Dez, as few are. Nevertheless, very astute pick by Hammond, and I'm sure Skiles appreciates it, as his first pick has become the human victory cigar-and no argument of the fact that he was one of the first off the bench against the Knicks. As the new human victory cigar, he should have started vs. the Knicks.

    THe difference between the Braves/Cubs and the Brews is the willingness on the part of Peavy to waive his no-trade clause. We could offer all the prospects on the farm and still come up dry. Unfortunately, Peavy wants to have total control over his situation with his new team, and given his contract, you can't dissuade him. Would a CC-type extention satisfy him, probably, but then you're trading a farm and hand-cuuffing your team for years over the pitching equivalent of Dante Bischette or Vinny Castilla.

    Have the Red Sox REALLY given up on the idea of Paps being a starter? I still have dreams of them signing K-Rod and moving Paps into the rotation, giving them the best rotation....ever. Paps/Beckett/Dice-K/Lester... Wake and Clay. Masterson. Umm...disgusting. As for the Brews, I would have no problem with Carlos in the 9th, though McClung would give me doubts. The thing about a closer is they are usually given a long leash, and when they're not, they do tend to lose a lot of their effectiveness, attempting to be too fine. Coffey doesn't excite me AT ALL because of this. Who do you trust enough to load the bases with no outs and not get the hook? Villy. Umm....Yo? I would think, unless Aguilar has a 0.00 ERA in ST, we'll see a true battle between the once (Torres) and future (CV the Younger...err. Villy, though he is still the youngest member of the staff outside of our DH.

    I thought the only player to sign an extention before arbitration, for FA years, while being advised by Scott Boras (So many qualifiers...) was Andruw Jones, and he did it DESPITE Boras's attempts to dissuade him. I find it hard to believe Boras would sign off on a player who just recently (as in when the contract was offered) hit 50 HR's-the younges to do so....ever. Let me ask you this question. If we weren't to sign CC, and we approached Prince now, what could he expect?

    What's the story with Robert Stock? Is he eligible to be drafted yet this year?

    I have to admit, tonight seemed like the coming out party for Luc Alphabet. He took the shot at the buzzer and he continues to play hounding (though not lockdown) defense. Tonight was a good statement game for Skiles' group, though the big test is next. But altogether, quite the effort tonight, even if my boy, Bogut, was sporadically used (and abused).

    But at $14-15mil per year, you would have to expect K-Rod/Nathan/Papelbon numbers, not a 3.50ERA. The reason he's going to be a top money winner is because he can go 200+IP.

    Wasn't there a big uproar when he was in NY about how he hated the "big city" atmosphere? And to say that with Yo/Parra/Bush/Vazquez/Soup, we wouldn't be a playoff team is a bit out there. The Phils, who just won the Series, started the season with a worse rotation, and to be frank, so did the Cubs. And considering that it would be a two-year deal, I could definitely get behind his acquisition.

    If Varitek even gets a one year deal at $13+mil, I'd be dumbfounded. When Kevin Cash is an upgrade offensively, you know you're not getting $13mil (and I know Cash isn't REALLY an upgrade, but seriously...). If Boras even gets eight figures for El Capitan, then I demand a full Senate hearing on the matter.

    Didn't Miggy Cabrera get $7.5 his first year? I would have no problem with an arby number of $7.5mil for Prince's first year. To be honest, after last year's shenanigans and Prince being miffed about being renewed, I don't want any more ill will between the Prince and his kingdom.

    Randy Johnson will probably go to the Yankees to be their fifth starter....or the Mets. Both of them are going to need an anchor in their rotations with a one year rental. You have Pedro coming off the books for the Metropolitans and Mussina and Pettitte for the Yanks.

    I think we could probably find Wes Obermueller on the cheap instead if you want a rundown pitcher who can hit, (as opposed to a Brooks-type, a hitter who can pitch... I think we have one on our pregame show).
