  1. In other words, yeah, what just happened is why we like him.
  2. He'd be available for the proverbial bag of balls. And he's basically terrible. Last year was his "good" year and he had a .301 OBP. He'll be 31 on opening day next year.
  3. Gillespie is a prospect. I think sometimes people underestimate just how hard Brevard is on a power hitter. Look at the line that Braun had there. You'd have to be an unbelievable power hitter to be able to go down and mash 30 bombs there. I think he will have an excellent year in Hunstville next year. Granted, I've been on the bandwagon like Patrick since day one, but I think at worse he's a solid 4th OF in the Gross mold.
  4. He gets on base, works the count, has decent power, and can passably play all three OF spots. There's a lot of utility in those things. This team's major offensive weakness is it's ability to get on base, and that's something Gross can do quite well, especially when you consider the alternatives - Mench vs. a RHP or, shudder to think, Gwynn. I think what people who aren't as high on Gross fail to see is that the people who do like him generally aren't saying that he's a potential star, or even an everyday player. I don't think I've ever seen anyone say he should play instead of Hart, except maybe one guy who saw him last spring and said he was better. Granted there is a thread on that very issue, but I think you'll find very few that agree with the idea. I have seen some that claim he will be as good as Jeromy Burnitz, but I think he's like a LH version of peak-era Chad Curtis, defensive versatility, some pop, and some walks. Most of us think he's a really good 4th OF and a bench bat that peaks as a solid platoon guy. But there's value there, and I think his situation was horribly handled this year. He should have gotten many more AB's earlier in the year than he did.
  5. Very cool, Brett. I'll have to see if I can hunt that down. You shouldn't have much of a problem at all. I had known about these for a while, just hadn't downloaded them, figuring I had the box set and that there was no way that these could really be markedly different. I couldn't have been more wrong, they are way better than any Beatles release on CD to this point. Just make sure you get the lossless FLAC files of these rather than mp3's, because it defeats the purpose. If someone is a Beatles fan and has never heard them on vinyl (luckily I had a cool dad with a few of the albums), you should definitely grab them. Ebbetts has also done amazing work with other Beatles albums - I highly recommend his Sgt. Pepper's mono release. It is fantastic, and honestly is the way the Beatles intended for it to be heard.
  6. It's not a purchase, but a friend hooked me up with Dr. Ebbetts Beatles Blue Box, which is just amazing. Basically, he took unplayed "audiophile" vinyl copies of 13 UK Stereo releases (which are considered to be the best sounding of all the releases, doesn't include "Magical Mystery Tour"), and digitally recorded them using hi-fi recording equipment. They sound absolutely stunning, so much so that it makes me want to throw out my "remastered" Beatles box set for being a cheap imposter. You can play these in your car and just blast them, they are so pristine. But yeah, they're really bootlegs.
  7. No, not really. But belittling the opinion of people who disagree with you and saying they are apologists and drinking the kool-aid is pretty much being a bad fan.
  8. I'd much rather see Gross get playing time in CF (or in RF with Hart playing CF) against some RHP's than just starting to sit Hart. Hall has been more consistently bad than Hart has this season, so I think he's the one that should be losing the AB's. Not to mention that now that Gross is up Mench should NEVER play against a RHP.
  9. I love Gross leading off. I'm about ready for Weeks to just go on the shelf for the rest of the year. He can't hit right now, neither can Counsell, but the defense is an upgrade. It's going to ride on Fielder/Braun/Jenkins the rest of the way, anyhow.
  10. A. They are arbitrary. Who's to say what is the optimum amount of innings? Doug Melvin, and his son who he comissioned to look at this sort of thing? Or countless other people that work in MLB organizations that have limited innings? And doctors?
  11. I think the guy's got a solid case.
  12. They have 12 pitchers. As far as I'm concerned they should be able to make it go just fine with that. It's not like Spurling ate innings, anyhow. If they want a guy to come in and take a beating for the team they should just call one of the chumps in Nashville up (Dickey or DiFelice) and just send out Parra, since they are reluctant (rightfully so) to use him for lots of innings in a blow-out. But they need a bench bat, and bad. They also need guys that get on base. The offense is far from great right now.
  13. The whole thing doesn't happen if Prince just goes to the dugout. It was really stupid for a MVP candidate on a team in the middle of a division race.
  14. Not surprising, he was totally unprofessional and lost his cool. I guess it means Dillon Time.
  15. I think Gross needs to take the AB's that Mench has been getting against RHP's lately, and probably start stealing some of Hall's AB's against righties. And he needs to hit in the top two of the lineup when he does play.
  16. Parra's going to run out of innings.
  17. There's probably a lot of guys. Probably any veteran on a bad team could be had.
  18. Not really. Once in a great while you can catch them, I have seen them take BP (or at least the last group) a few times, usually Friday games. If you are going to one of these Cards games, watch Duncan take BP, though. He has the most power I have ever witnessed.
  19. Yeah, steroid abuse quite often doesn't manifest itself for quite a while. So, it's definitely reasonable to place some of the blame on Vince. But then you could say that Adams' ambition led to it, since he used (and wasn't "forced" to) in order to advance in the business. This is all speculation, of course.
  20. Doesn't he own a car in that series or something?
  21. Yes, Homer, that's exactly what I was alluding to. He gets pitched carefully sometimes as it is, but the problem is that he doesn't see it and falls behind in the count. Plus, if he continues to be a great hitter and gain accolades, one of the benefits of that is added respect from umpires leading to a smaller strike zone for the pitcher and more walks. I think that's been a big part of Pujols walk rate increases.
  22. Why not move on from that stuff and celebrate a guy who was in the greatest gimmick in the history of wrestling, the NWO? And of course in the great NWO Black & White with greats like Horace Hogan, Vince, and Stevie Ray. Who could forget the great Hollywood line "Vince, go get the Taurus, brother"?
  23. Whoa it's storming.
