  1. Sarfate was going to be gone next year if he didn't break camp with the team. This way, they get something in return for him.
  2. That's a good question. There's not really anyone in my division that sticks out as someone you would do the dramatic shift on, aside from possibly Adrian Gonzalez and Bonds. I think even so, having that much higher of a number of out of zone plays probably can't be completely explained by the shift alone.
  3. Tulo's OOZ is ridiculous - 78, compared to Reyes at 50 and Vizquel at 40. For what it's worth, Bill Hall was actually #1 last year at SS with 66 plays made OOZ (Hardy is at 58 currently), but Everett was clearly #1.
  4. Vizquel definitely was a great one, but his fielding (as one would expect) has slipped as he has gotten older. He's still pretty good, but I would put Tulo, Everett, and Reyes above him, to name a few at this point. And Minutemen are definitely great.
  5. There are other very bad things about errors (and just misplays in general, of which Braun has many) aside from runs scoring in that inning. The extra number of pitches the pitcher has to throw in that inning could very well have a negative impact in his performance the next inning or three innings down the road. Tulo is soooo good defensively that he almost has to be a serious contender for the award, and apparently Jonah Keri gives it to him at this point, as well. Defense is extremely underrated by sportswriters (not to mention most fans, also), though, so I don't see Tulo winning it.
  6. Well, VORP doesn't take defense into account, and like I said, Tulo is a great defensive player. EDIT: Though I should say that Tulo's great defensive advantage probably doesn't make up for over 2 wins of offense. It's much closer than it looks when you're looking strictly at offensive production, that's all.
  7. Well, here's the next one to be unveiled... Jay Gibbons, come on down!!! Gibbons got steroids and HGH
  8. Tulowitzki is an amazing defensive player, possibly the best SS in the NL behind Adam Everett. And it does make a difference that he's an SS, as Russ mentioned. Even with that Braun is better than him, and I'd expect him to win the award quite easily, even with the politicking that guys like Ringolsby will do on behalf of Tulo. I'm just really glad that both of the guys that I wanted the Brewers to draft in '05 have turned out to be excellent players.
  9. Since coming back, in a miniscule 100 PA's, his line has been .297/.480/.459. So he has hit the ball, too. I'm not saying he's "back", or that he was ever even "there". I don't think the Nashville excursion is what caused him to improve, he was just bound to regress to the mean, he's not a .100 hitter or something. He has been better than adequate at the leadoff spot, the combination of he and Gross at the top of the order has been what has sparked this run, in my opinion. It's a shame it took Yost so long to realize that they would score more runs with those guys up there. And yeah, he's one of the worst defensive second basemen in the league, that's why I'm always kind of puzzled when he is seen as what Braun should try to become. I hope Braun can develop into better than a bottom five defender at his position.
  10. The Cardinals are closing in on the Yankees as my least favorite team again... Well, don't forget, they have Shelly Duncan, who must be on steroids, too since his dad is the sith overlord of HGH use.
  11. I agree that sometimes you have to recognize when the window is open, but the time is now for what exactly? What is the goal? And why does not acquiring a mediocre relief pitcher effect the outcome of the plan? Seriously, if Bob Wickman was born in Idaho no one would have even mentioned it when he got released.
  12. 1. Elliott Smith - "Sweet Adeline" 2. Neko Case - "Poor Ellen Smith" 3. Uncle Tupelo - "Song to Woody" 4. Gram Parsons & The International Submarine Band - "Luxury Liner" 5. Chuck Berry - "Guitar Boogie" 6. Whiskeytown - "Top Dollar" 7. Tarkio - "Goodbye Girl" 8. Palace Brothers - "Trudy Dies" 9. Johnny Cash - "Rowboat" 10. Red House Painters - "Rollercoaster" 11. Camera Obscura - "Country Mile" 12. Gram Parsons - "Hearts on Fire" 13. Ryan Adams - "My California Love" 14. Ryan Adams & The Cardinals - "If I Am a Stranger" 15. Grateful Dead - "Jack Straw" (2/26/1973) 16. Ryan Adams & The Cardinals - "When Will You Come Back Home" 17. Silver Jews - "K-Hole" 18. Gillian Welch - "Acony Bell" 19. Tom Waits - "Army Ants" 20. Elliott Smith - "Rose Parade" (6/2/1998) For the most part, a bunch of alt-country bookended by Elliott Smith.
  13. I'm not in favor of any trade that results in Tony Gwynn leading off or playing everyday. That just fills one hole while creating another larger one. I think Bay could possibly be had for less, since he's had a rough year, you'd be trading a guy (Weeks) at the low point of his value for another player in the same situation. Jason Bay was a top 10 player in the NL for the past few years, so it would be awesome to get him. I'd be more in favor of dealing pitching for him, honestly, and position players not at the major league level.
  14. I can laugh at this, because I have a strange feeling that scoring one run in the top of the 1st wouldn't have made much of a difference. This is up there with salad tongs.
  15. I disagree 100%. Prince is going to be the guy that puts and keeps Milwaukee on the baseball map. Mark and the ownership group know this. At this point, you let the money go with guys like Bill Hall and Rickie Weeks. I see Prince in the Brewer Blue for some time to come. Boras guys go where the biggest offer is. There's no chance he'll be a Brewer past 27 or 28. I'm pretty sure Boras isn't going to be cool with Prince giving away his arby or first couple of FA years, either.

  17. I bought Decemberists pre-sale tickets to "The Long and the Short of it" at the Riverside in November a couple days ago, and after shuffling the entire catalog the past day or so, "Angel Won't You Call Me" has become lodged in my head. This is a good thing, though. I found it streaming here: "Angel, Won't You Call Me?"
  18. Am I wrong to say that it depends on what the Brewers do tonight and tomorrow? I've got Sunday Ticket, though, so I will probably watch football and follow the Brewers with a combination of radio and gamecast.
  19. If I get in my car and proceed to go 120 MPH, I could very well crash my car. I also might not. However, the chances that I will are way higher than if I were to simply go on the highway and set my cruise at 70 MPH.
  20. I agree, Ennder. Duncan's probably due to get hot again, too, because he's been in a pretty massive slump the last month +. I think their pitching might start to falter, though. I'm amazed at how Braden Looper has pitched, especially lately, along with Pineiro.
  21. Heck, the end was near about a week ago. If you bought into that. Some fans just live and die with every game way too much. Not saying that it's wrong, but it's got to wreak havoc on your emotions and cause ulcers. I've pretty much stuck to them winning the division, and I'm going to keep it that way. Not that I haven't almost wavered a couple of times, of course. All I am saying is give enjoying the ride a chance.
  22. He has thrown 1369 pitches in 16 games (13 starts), which is an average of about 86 per game. He has gone 100 or more five times, topping out at 109. EDIT: After doing some work myself, he has thrown 1230 pitches in his 13 starts, averaging about 95 per game. For comparison's sake, Sheets averages 99 pitches per game. Suppan averages 98, Bush 92 per game (94 per start), and Vargas 88 per game (94 per start).
  23. People pointing at Thome as part of the problem are barking up the wrong tree, I think. That was an excellent trade, considering they also got Gio Gonzalez as part of the deal. Since coming to the White Sox, Thome has hit .277/.410/.556 with 65 HR. Since leaving the White Sox, Frank Thomas has hit .271/.378/.504 with 60 HR. The real problem is that they thought Scott Podsednik was good, and then they thought Darin Erstad would help the team somehow, when the best thing he can do if he plays for your team is get injured. Their offense is just awful, and that's the biggest problem they face, Uribe is brutal. So is Pierzynski. They just fell way too in love with the "gritty gamers" instead of people who are good at baseball.
  24. This is the best lineup they can put on the field right now, probably.
