  1. That is a way cool story...thanks for sharing. DM was out at the Dodger games last year and couldn't have been nicer when I went to say hi.
  2. Quote from Mets broadcaster (I think Darling) - "How do you have an approach against this guy when he doesn't even know what he's doing out there?"
  3. Kick me while I'm down...uggh. If that 'roid freak malcontent gets into Cooperstown, I will go there and boo.
  4. He's a powder keg for sure and the umps have it in for him...a very volatile combination. It will be very interesting to see how this works for the Cubs. On one hand, Bradley is a talent. The Cubs looked like they were sleep walking in the playoffs last year and they need some fire. Outside of Zambrano and Pinella, there are no real "firey" type guys on the team. Derek Lee might be the team leader and he's about as mellow as they come. I've also noticed when they play the Brewers, despite all the animosity between the fans, there doesn't seem to be much between the players. Maybe Bradley brings them that intangible. On the other side, Bradley could meltdown at any moment and that puts the Cubs clubhouse into a death spiral. Maybe he blows his knee out while being restrained from taking on 4 umps, several cops, the grounds crew and numerous hot dog vendors in some type of blind rage over a called third strike at the knees. He gets suspended and takes a few guys with him. I'm sure rooting for the latter, but who knows.
  5. I'm with TLB...he's been my breakout player for the last few years. Hopefully this will be the year. He looks good at the plate so far and much more at ease in the field. He still has bounced a couple to Fielder on double plays which makes me a little nervous.
  6. As I sit here in the shadows of Jackie Robinson's alma mater...I couldn't think of a better way to honor a great man. Nice to see the guys bust through tonight. My goodness Cam, what a night!!! You too Ennder!
  7. With all due respect to those who have followed...Merle was Uecker's best partner over the years. Maybe it was just my first intro to the Brewers, but I thought they were an awesome team. Great story Pedro. I was a big fan of both Fan Fair and Hegan's Grand Slam. Promising me a walk through Fan Fair was the only way Mom could get me to go with her shopping at Mayfair. RIP Merle.
  8. Braun was also on the 4/13 ESPN: Baseball Today podcast. He was interviewed by Peter Pascarelli. I got it through iTunes.
  9. To answer the initial question - on April 15th? Not at all. I agree with the Phillies analogy. They had one stud, we have one stud. They had a number of 3/4 guys that stepped up, the same could happen for us. Our lineups are somewhat similar as well...we just need to heat up, but all the guys are capable (we could debate Hall & Kendall). The biggest difference is the bullpen. It wasn't just Lidge. They were solid in innings 7-9. We just don't have the talent in the pen, but we certainly could improve when Hoffman returns. They won 90+, I agree we look like a mid-80's win team. To get above that, we'll need 30-40 extra runs scored, a rotation that is slightly above average and a better bullpen. I don't see it now, but it isn't outside of the realm of possibility...even at 2-6.
  10. That was flat out ugly. Anyone else think the body language from Braun was not good? He looks like he's so frustrated before he even gets a pitch. I worry about that oblique. I sure hope he gets healthy...I might even sit him tomorrow. Get him a couple days of rest. I didn't worry when Cain blew them away...he looked awesome. Arroyo looked very hittable tonight. At least Parra was able to get through 6 despite struggling. DiFelice had another solid outing...but Big Red looked bad and CV was horrendous.
  11. The only rookie I can think of in my baseball fan lifetime that made a bigger splash was Fernando-mania...maybe Ichiro was close. He was THE story that year.
  12. Kendall is the best option if his defense is up to the level it was in 2008. So far he looks as good as last year behind the plate. He has had 2 wrong calls on steals so far this year IMO. I do agree on the late game pinch hitting. I'd continue to do it the way Macha is...use Rivera 1/5 games with maybe a day game mixed in, but be a little more willing to pinch hit late in the game.
  13. The only conclusive thing I've seen so far from Macha is he is more direct and honest in his postgame presser. None of this "Soup pitched great" stuff. He seems a little more willing to call it as he sees it. Hopefully that translates into less myopia in the dugout. I've scratched my head on a few moves, but it's early and I think he needs time to figure out what he's dealing with so no major criticisms to date.
  14. It's early - but so far: Our most encouraging hitter has been Weeks. I hope it keeps up as well. He is hitting the ball hard and taking his walks pitches. If he emerges as a top flight lead off hitter, he will score a ton of runs. I share the biggest concern with Ennder. I'm not sure if Braun is just slumping or if he's hurt. He looks like he did during that patch last year when we found out his intercostal was hurt. Not sure he goes on the 60 day DL, but if he plays hurt his stats will surely suffer. Our most encouraging pitcher - In looking for some bullpen guys to step up, certainly Coffey and DiFelice have looked good so far. Bush and Looper had decent starts as well. Aside from the obvious Suppan concern, I've been surprised Macha hasn't gone to Stetter on a couple occassions. If he really is our LOOGY, Macha needs to get some confidence in him or we need an alternative. ***Good point Gobias - it should be taking his pitches instead of walks.
  15. Who knows if Yo can even play the field? His only option may be to try and DH.
  16. Well, we started hot in 2007...and fell apart. Last year we struggled early, then found a groove. Too soon to hit the panic button...but they sure know how to open up all those pet peeve wounds with the walks and the LOB.
  17. C'mon Difer...give the Suppan pitchfork posse something to hang their hat on!!!
  18. I thought Wilco was some muffler company. What's up with those 2 k's...those weren't strikes a couple innings ago.
  19. Certainly his starts have been a disappointment at this point. It is magnified since he has started 1/3 of our games so far. We went into our first two series with our 5-1-2 vs. the Giants 1-2-3 and our 3-4-5 vs. the Cubs 1-2-3. That didn't help either. At this point the money is sunk, so it should be taken out of the equation. That is psychologically difficult to do, but he'll get paid whether he plays for us or not. The question going forward should be - is Suppan our best option as a fifth starter? I see no obvious change at this point. Until Suppan is either confirmed injured or demonstrates over 6-8 additional starts that he is flat out incapable of delivering a 5-6 inning start with at least a mid 5 ERA, he should stay. Our options are either McClung or DiFelice, neither of whom have proven they are that much better or our signees at Nashville who need the 6-8 starts to prove themselves as well. It may not be pretty, but for now Soup will and probably should stay.
  20. At the very least, the Cubs just figured out they signed Eric Gagne. Marmol will have to close...that's good news in the long run.
  21. Is it just me or did the guys in the truck figure out he was out and the announcers couldn't figure it out?
  22. dlk - Those pictures bring back some great memories!!! Go Crew!!!
  23. dlks - it's hard for me watching TV to completely gauge whether a good throw would have gotten him...you may be correct and I'll give you that. My beef was more philosophical. The windmill was aggressive last year and I liked it. He may have been out indeed, but put the pressure on the defense to make the throw. It takes two good throws and a solid tag to get someone. Most coaches are too conservative and are worried about making a mistake. Sveum got ripped on a few last year when they made the throws and were out by a mile, but there were even more plays where it forced a bad throw, the run scored and another runner could advance. I say get aggressive and put the pressure on the defense. Channel the windmill!!!
