  1. Congrats Jenks...that was awesome to see. If it couldn't be the Brewers...glad it went to Jenks, especially since he finally got a chance to contribute. He got the ball rolling with that double. The guy paid his dues with the Crew, no doubt.
  2. Johnson's ERA would go down a half point just from not having to pitch against the Brewers :-)
  3. A potential lower cost option with Gamel is to start the year with the Hall/Branyan platoon and see how the platoon and Gamel start the year. If they get comfortable enough with Gamel's glove and Hall is performing like last year, move him up late May/early June. They save a year on service time and give Gamel the time he is missing in the AFL. If DM has a better 3B option for 2009, I'd rather see that since that position was among the least productive on the team...but we are stuck with Hall anyway and there are other pressing needs on the club to be addressed. Hall could be valuable as a bench player...he can probably play all 4 infield positions...he's a worse glove than Counsell but at least he's got some pop...when he's not striking out. The other option is doing the same with Escobar, but moving Hardy to 3B in the middle of the season is problematic.
  4. twobrewers brings up a great point. Jack Z's main skill has been in bringing up a certain type of player. I don't necessarily think that's a bad thing. Given the Brewers historical position, they have needed to draft more "predictable" players. Also, players that can produce quicker...in that 6 year window. Speed players can often develop slower. You can't teach power...then again they haven't been able to teach OBP. I think Jack Z has done a very solid job in that regard...over time it will be up to the GM to use some of those power players in personnel moves to create a more balanced MLB lineup.
  5. This is a great list...and a big reason we should be happy DM will be our GM for the next 4 years. Now where is that 5th starter we need...
  6. I'm really glad Melvin signed the extension. I trust in DM to bring in a good guy who is his guy. If it isn't Sveum, so be it. I liked Dale a great deal, he'll always be a Brewer...and I disagree with others...IMO, he was an excellent 3B coach. I just want a manager who will play the odds...go by the book and forget the gut...not be so stubborn and myopic...Yost's worst qualities. I do want someone who can keep the cohesiveness of that clubhouse. I think this was a piece of their success...they were able to keep their heads screwed on straight enough to pull out of their nosedive. A guy like Macha could disrupt that. In the end it comes mainly down to the talent and the players. That's why it's more important that we have DM back than whoever he chooses as manager.
  7. Would Gamel really be a better glove at 1B than Fielder? Could happen, but his early returns at 3B are less than promising. The argument on your side could be many of his errors were the result of poor throwing...not as big of an issue at 1B. Am I missing anything?
  8. I'll be happy for him if he gets the job. It's inevitable. It is inevitable indeed. Selfishly, it would be nice to get through one more year with Jack Z, given all the draft choices we may have next year. For Seattle, he would be perfect...they are overburdened with bad contracts and have a decimated farm system. They need to start from the ground up...who better than Jack. We were lucky the Pirates didn't hire him last year...big mistake on their part.
  9. I disagree with those who argue Sveum using Kendall every day was a mistake. The time to rest Kendall was May-August so he could play everyday down the stretch in September. By the time Sveum took over, why wouldn't he roll Kendall out there everyday with only two weeks left, versus Rivera who barely played all year? This was a Yost problem, not a Sveum problem IMO.
  10. I agree with Rillo...Bush did very well post-May this year, but he is a poor man's Suppan. He should be a very solid #4-5 starter for the next 2 seasons. That is plenty enough for me. I'd like to see us attempt to sign Hardy & Fielder to longer-term deals (ala Braun) that buyout a year or two of Free Agency. This will be increasingly difficult to acheive...they are too close to FA to give in on a contract. At least we have them at affordable rates for the next 2/3 years respectively...I see no reason to let them go before that. At that point we potentially have their replacements ready in Escobar & Gamel. Maybe they could deal Hardy after next season if the price is right. I would NOT trade Prince for pitching. He is our only significant LH bat. Take Prince out of that lineup and they will have an even tougher time scoring runs. We have three dependable bats...Braun, Fielder and Hardy. This lineup can not afford to give up any of those guys and not expect to lose more in run production than is likely gained in pitching.
  11. Best part of the blog...it must mean the team is close to a 3-year exension with DM...that is great news IMO.
  12. That was awesome...I still get chills watching that homer...the iPhone with the MLB app is terrific. I probably watched that clip on my phone a dozen times.
  13. The Packers were still quite popular in the 70's & 80's...it was painful, but football Sundays are like Friday Night Fish Frys in Wisconsin...no matter what the fish tastes like or how good/bad the Packers are...Wisconsinites will show up. Baseball has had a more difficult path over time...the Braves moved, the 90's were hopeless for small market teams...it's great to see things back on the upswing, but it's always been a bumpier ride. The Packers will always be fairly popular reagrdless of the team...I hope the Brewers can maintain their support even if the team falls back a little next year.
  14. In retrospect, the CC move probably contributed more than the 1.5-2 wins, however...do you really think CC's 2H performance is repeatble on a consistent basis over the course of a 6 year contract? He's a horse, no doubt...but that is asking quite a bit.
  15. Of course if Kendall's defense slips back to his 2007 rates he'll be completely useless and could be the #2. Great point...Kendall was outstanding behind the dish this year. He threw runners out at a great clip and had those "intanglibles" with our pitching staff. Tough to say what that was worth, but the pitching was very good. However, he is very weak at the plate. With his age and the beating he took from starting all those games this year, there is strong chance he regresses. The argument to the contrary is he kept himself in great shape. He didn't seem to let down with all those games played. Maybe I'm just used to seeing a guy like Estrada break down as the year went on because he was so fat and out of shape.
  16. With the pitching unlikely to be what it was last year (losing CC & Sheets offset by a full year of Gallardo)...the Brewers need to pick up 30-40 runs. Ennder has had some interesting posts on this that I agree with. Rough estimate...that means they need to have an OPS in the range of the Phillies (.770) and Cardinals (.783)...versus the .757 they put up this year...perhaps another 20 bps. Holding most of the positions the same (I think a decent assumption since most of the players have yet to hit their prime)... 1. Hall, 3B - Replacing Hall with an average NL third baseman would probably get them halfway there. Hall was flat out horrendous. A .689 OPS at a premium bat position? Two horrible years in a row is enough proof for me. We cannot afford the black hole of production he supplied this year. Maybe Hall becomes our utility player over Counsell. He's got a slightly better bat with some power...although the glove is much worse. It's not like anyone will take that contract. 2. Bench player - Everyone is down on Weeks & Hart. They are still young...Weeks is at least average and Hart was fairly good for 2/3 of the season...I'm not ready to give up there. Just a slight improvement by these two to more normalized OPS could get the other half of the improvement. I'd stick with them...they are cheap options and replace Counsell with a better bat. For gosh sakes...do not trade Prince. He has a great bat and is our only decent LH hitter.
  17. There has been a great deal of Suppan bashing lately, and much of it is deserved. His contract will certainly be an albatross for the next two seasons. However, Soup's career stats had him around a 4.50 ERA. He is getting older, which argues against this, but why can't he get back to his career norms? At that level he's a very viable #4 starter. I think Soup was hurt late in the season...that was a major factor in his deterioration. If he is reasonably healthy next season...he should be an ok 4th starter. Starting an injured, ineffective "Big-game" pitcher in game four, paying him $12mm each of the next two years...I can't justify that...but it doesn't seem out of the question that Soup starts 32 games and has a mid-4's ERA next year.
  18. The team name would officially be re-named the Milwaukee Schlitz.
  19. If Hardy was moved to 2B or 3B by the Brewers for a year or two, would that preclude another team from acquiring him to move him back to SS? Would he retain that SS premium for himself and the Brewers? I don't see why not. A league average 3B would be a big improvement over what we had this year...Hall was a disaster. We may go from an above average SS and a well below average 3B to an average 3B (Hardy) & an average SS (Escobar)...with an improvement in the defense. That doesn't seem that bad of an option for 2010.
  20. Could signing CC be like the Reds signing Griffey? CC is everything he's cracked up to be...no doubt, but 25% of the payroll to one player? He could be awesome for another 5-6 years, but we may not be able to put a team around him. I'd also like us to extend guys like Prince & Hardy out beyond their arby years ala Braun. We also have holes to fill that we may not be able to do with our minor league players. 3B is a gaping hole. I believe Weeks and Hart will be able to improve next year, but if they don't, changes may be needed there as well. The Brewers have gotten themselves to a point where they are more mid-market than small market...kudos to management and the city for their support. That does mean they can afford basically anyone that they want including CC...but they can't afford everyone they want. CC won't take much of a discount to play here. The Brewers need to project a way to get the payroll to north of $100 million over the next few years and be profitable at that level to afford CC. I'm not privy to their financial statements, but I just don't see that happening.
  21. I do disagree with those that want to trade Prince. He is not just a power guy, he is a solid hitter. In a lineup short of left handed bats, he provides the strength in the middle of the lineup. He's not a great glove, but at position like 1B he's hardly a disaster ala Braun at 3B circa 2007. His 3 years of arby will be affordable. I think it's more important to find a bat to put behind him to get him better pitches. With Corey and Hall struggling behind him, he was too often pitched around. Hardy hit well behind him, but does not seem the best fit for the 5 hole. I'd rather see us find a better solution at 3B...perhaps a guy that can hit behind Prince. Look at the Phillies. I would take our starting pitching in 2009 without CC & Sheets over theirs (they're at least equivalent). They had a great bullpen, but a big advantage was the meat of that order...Utley, Howard and Burrell (An MVP at the top of the order doesn't hurt either). How would trading Fielder for Matt Cain (I swear this is bf.net's favorite trade idea) help our lineup?
  22. Keeping a pitching staff ready to go the entire season has been very difficult for the Brewers. In 2007, the bullpen got overused and ran out of gas. This season, the starters were pressed to go deeper into games to save the bullpen. This worked well until September when the starters ran out of gas. Sheets was injured, Soup is probably as well and Parra was gassed. A broader question is how do we keep the entire pitching staff on par for the entire season? One of the prior posters made a great point...get Gallardo and Parra to their peak by mid-May. That makes some sense with guys that haven't had the 200 inning season yet. This is where a guy like DiFelice or a Seth McClung could make a difference. Either spot starts...occassional 6 man rotations or 3-4 inning bullpen duty could save the starters and keep the Gagne, Torres and Motas fresh into year end. It really requires Melvin to look to getting a staff that goes 15-16 deep into AAA. It may take a pre-season plan that puts a heavy load on certain guys early and brings up lesser used reinforcements at mid-year. That is a big challenge for DM and the Brewers with a limited payroll and limited depth in the upper tiers of the minors on the mound.
  23. Winning an October playoff game was awesome. Just wanted you to know.
  24. What a great night at the Keg. The crowd was electric. The team played really well. I thought our approach at the plate was great. How about Cam and Billy Hall with the walks...wow. JJ was smoking...even his out was smacked. Solid D too. You can't say enough about Bush either...he has been outstanding. Just gotta get one more tomorrow and we get to CC.
