  1. Part of me wouldn't mind seeing Sheets and Sabathia get an extra day of rest rather than 2 days or skipping a starter in late August.
  2. Maybe they should charge a $20 surcharge on Sabathia's starts...they could specifically escrow the money to pay for 2009 starting pitching!!!
  3. To answer the original question...not much. The dude is awesome in every way - great pitcher with nasty stuff who is efficient and goes deep into games, carries a decent bat and has completely embraced his teammates and the fans. Just awesome. The question of do we keep Sabathia and/or Sheets...its just not going to happen, nor should it. I'd love to sign both of them for 6-7 years...but that might be 40-50% of our payroll at a huge risk. I'd go with Yo & Parra as our new studs. We'll still be a playoff contender next year with those two. Melvin will need to explore other options to add another arm or two, but he has players, prospects and money to work with. Brewers fans need to ask - Do we want to be like the Astros? Signing 2-3 name guys and surrounding them with a bunch of stiffs? They'll probably go after Sheets the way they thought about Valverde...thinking they need one player to get them over the hump, when in reality they are very far away. The thought of being saddled with a Zito-like contract is too big of a risk for a team like the Brewers.
  4. I'm bummed I won't get to see either against the Dodgers out here...but maybe I can rally the troops into a "Let CC hit" chant.
  5. Note to Ned...don't let "Don Tony" sucker you in tonight. After that post-game press conference meltdown last night, there is no doubt he'll be out tonight.
  6. My three Bill Hall thoughts of the day: What are the odds that Prince gets so excited after another GW HR tonight that he puts Billy Hall on the DL? My new nickname for Billy Hall = "The Bull"...he really gets in gear when he sees red!!! If there was any doubt that Brian Anderson reads this website, it was completely dismissed the Monday night when he uttered, "Bill Hall wins games". That was awesome.
  7. Escobar is too high of a price. I'd rather see a multi-player package deal of prospects. Any thoughts on realistically what it would take to get Sherrill?
  8. A couple more wins over the Cards and maybe they drop out of the reliever acquisition market.
  9. Olney was saying the supply of relievers is plentiful at this point. I'd like to see us go after Sherrill. The want a SS, but it's not like we'd have to part with Escobar.
  10. I really like thablingster's grades...very spot in. I would just point out was is probably assumed...the grades are realitive to the player's role and the expectations for the player. On an absolute basis, obviously Braun is more valuable than Kapler...but relative to expectations Kapler has been a bigger surprise. I also agree with those who believe we'll see a bigger set up role for Villy in the second half. If Bush or McClung slide into that long relief role...that opens up Villy for the 7th or 8th after Mota's probable DFA. A committee of Villy/Gagne/Riske/Shouse and Stetter can get you through 6-8 to Torres.
  11. Interesting...they must be fully funding the new stadium. It's always tough to go by the Forbes numbers. Since the teams don't fully disclose their financials, the information is often partial or inaccurate...plus it's only a one year snapshot. They also use EBITDA for their income line, my guess is when Mark says they will lose money, that includes his interest cost. But your point is valid, despite running a slight income loss this year, he has done well on his investment and has certainly gotten some personal utility from owning a sports team...that's good for him...and good for us.
  12. I'd love to see about 45 pitches here by Marmol.
  13. The AL should have to forfeit for using up their pitchers.
  14. Side note...judging from the hair and ED commercials, we all must be over 60 if we are still watching this game.
  15. How about Francona vs. Hurdle...best of 7...rock, paper, scissors. Go Paper Clint!!!
  16. Gotcha AJAY...don't worry, you didn't miss much in the 12 before that.
  17. Refresh my memory...what happened in '81?
  18. Can anyone remember a really good Brewer All-Star moment? I seem to remember Lary Sorensen retiring 9 in a row and maybe Sheeter tonight, but I can't remember anything from a hitter.
  19. That's hilarious...hats off to Mark A for pony-ing up the jet!!!
  20. I believe there were times during the 90s when the ownership group received capital calls. I doubt that will happen even with the operating loss this year, but it is always a possibility. Continued increases in franchise values are not guaranteed. From what I understand, the team does carry significant interest cost since the purchase was financed with a large amount of debt and the team contributed some amount to build Miller Park. That interest may be included in the loss they are citing. It also means an increase in franchise value has an even greater impact on their equity value...from that standpoint this ownership group has done quite well with their investment to date.
  21. True, extending Bando was a mistake, and was probably done out of a mistaken loyalty. I think people underestimate how good of a hire Taylor was. While horrendous at the major league level, his rebuilding of the minor league system is paying huge dividends today. Wendy did play a role in the stadium although it was certainly led by Bud. I also think you are underestimating how bad things were economically in baseball in the 90's. They made a bad situation worse through poor management by Bando, but for small market teams the situation was indeed hopeless. The seeds of the current team's success were sown before Mark arrived...I think Wendy deserves some of the credit for that. It didn't just turn on a dime the day the franchise was sold.
  22. Any chance they pinch hit Corey for Fukodome before his first AB?
  23. Couldn't agree more. Houston is in that weird zone that will keep them in that 75-80 win zone for awhile. Their team is aging, yet their owner throws money around thinking he's one player away. Signing Valverde was silly. Their starting pitching is bad and getting worse now that Oswalt isn't Oswalt anymore. They probaly will rationalize that Oswalt will regain form and if they bring in another ace, they'll have an awesome 1-2 punch, but they'll keep getting older. It would be great to rethink we could keep Sheet and/or CC, but it just won't happen...it's too big of a percentage of the payroll. DM's bet will be that Gallardo comes back as an ace and Parra keeps improving into a solid #2. He likely trades for a three and fills in with Soup, Bush, Villy, McClung or their equivalents until some of the single-A and below pitching talent starts to surface. If Yo & Parra can keep us competitive, he may be able to pull off a CC-equivalent trade next year as well...but committing to a 6-7 year deal is just too risky.
