  1. I completely disagree that their baserunning has been bad this year. On the contrary, I believe their aggressive style has led to a net increase in runs. They have forced outfielders into making bad throws and scored. Granted, last night was not a good one. Sveum was very upfront and admitted his poor decision in the post-game interview. Mistakes happen, but from a season long philosphical perspective, the windmill at third is net ahead IMO. As far as whether or not to sacrifice the base runner to get the run across, I think it often depends on the situation. The baserunner must determine whether the runner going home needs that protection. Last night it did not appear he did, so it was likely a poor decision. Is it early or late...there are times, especially in a close game late that it makes sense if a runner can get in a rundown to draw the throw away from the plate. Doing it early may take you out of a big inning.
  2. La Crosse Day...as someone who has been there once, I hereby nominate Mike Rivera as honarary mayor of La Crosse for the day!!! Can I get a second?
  3. My prediction - Jason Kendall will weigh under 170 lbs by Oct 1 My buddy and I had a long discussion at the game on Sunday...Has Jason Kendall lost more weight during the season than Johnny Estrada gained last year? I'm thinking Kendall has dropped 20 lbs, but Estrada must have added 50 last year. Note to Jason - Use your day off to pony up to the training table today!!!
  4. The decision had already been made that he was getting the extra day and Yost was not going to skip anyone. You may disagree with that decision, but he was not going to pitch Saturday, whether he threw 130 pitches or 80 yesterday. jeff - very fair point. My argument breaks down because I combined two decisions that I disagreed with. Let me rephrase - 1) IMO, The option should have been kept open to throw CC on Saturday, getting him an extra start before year end. In a closer game, Torres would have been out there anyway. They should have planned for that in advance. 2) IMO, In a blowout, throwing him out there for the last two innings gained very little and increased the chance of injury or fatigue. They gained nothing and risked a great deal.
  5. Look at 1982...by the end of the year, Vuke & Fingers were hurt and Sutton & Medich were out of gas. Granted, CC is in his prime and all those guys were in the later stages of their careers, but if you pitch a guy when he's not needed, all you are doing is increasing the chance of injury or wearing a guy out. I'm as nostalgic as the next guy, but for every Warren Spahn there are 100 talented guys we don't remember because they blew their arms out. That's why they use things like pitch counts.
  6. It appears the "Double Secret" Rotation is out the window after last night's game. Maybe Ned is gambling that the high pitch counts can be made up with some upcoming extra rest for the starters. I've updated brewerfan's awesome first post to show what it looks like if Ned just kept them in order. Personally, I would have rather seen Ned yank CC after 7 last night and throw him out there Saturday. 7. Another great 1998 pickup for the Dodgers.
  8. Of course CC wants to finish the game. He's a competitor and probably never wants to come out of the game. This is where Ned needs to take control and show some leadership. Our bullpen is in fine shape and we had a huge lead. Regardless of your side between Sabathia broke down in the playoffs versus he's a horse and pitch counts don't matter...there was no reason for him to be out there. Granted, things like Arizona do happen, but a reasonable major league bullpen should be able to hold a 6-7 run lead. He even mentioned after the game he was counting on the extra day of rest...if he is indeed such a horse, I would have rather yanked him after 7 and threw him back out there on Saturday.
  9. CC did not look happy after the game...not sure if he was upset with himself for the 9th or with Ned for leaving him in. He should have been out after 7.
  10. TH should take a page from Jeff Potrykus, the Badger football beat writer. They both cover the teams well and have done a nice job with the blogs. They both get a little snarky at times with the readers both in the blog and in their weekly chats. My guess is they get plenty of critical and profane e-mails and posts that lead to some of these responses. However, Potrykus never responded in the way TH did to Adam...a way that flat out crossed the line. Potrykus even responds and posts in various Badger blogs like BadgerNation. He realizes that the newspaper business isn't the monopoly that it used to be and rather than fight it, embrace it. He can make these posts and drive traffic to the Journal website. C'mon TH, writers have been getting critical letters delivered to their bosses since the Guttenburg Press, it's part of the business. E-mail is no different. Garry Howard firing you over a random e-mail from a reader would be like Ned Yost getting canned by the Brewers due to some random blog post (like the one TH cited last year). If TH was smart he would be on this site engaging with readers in an intelligent discussion about the Brewers, not fighting it, or the Journal should try and manage their blog into a more readable form like this site. The information flows much more freely these days which demands a more forward thinking approach to journalism. TH and his snarky young counterpart need to pick up on this.
  11. We'll have some solid Brewer support out at Chavez Ravine today. The local Badger alumni club will have a group of 150ish sitting out by the Brewer bullpen. I finally made it back from an ill timed vacation a day early so I can get out there tomorrow as well!!! I'll be there in the old powder blue Yount jersey near the Brewer dugout. GO BREWERS!!!
  12. I went back and looked at it...it was like they went up to high five and stopped right before contact, then just kept moving through the line. Strange...if it wasn't for Monday you never would have noticed, it was very slight. I didn't see the face smack the night before. Prince has been fairly jovial with the other guys the last couple days, can't really tell with Manny. It does make me wonder if this could linger with Manny or if there were some issues with him before this. I hope not...Manny will be critical down the stretch.
  13. 1) Natural Disaster 2) Not sure it matters at this point. This weekend our prime competition will be playing .500 ball in total. Cubs/Cards & Marlins/Mets. We will play the worst team in the NL at home. If we take care of business, we'll catch up or put some distance between ourselves and the pack. 3) If push comes to shove...I'll root against the Cubs. This is purely an emotional response driven by my undying hatred of that team and their fans.
  14. That would be very cool...great insight. Here's to a big evening of "In Play, Run(s)" for the Crew!!!
  15. Wouldn't you say that #8 in runs scored is somewhat disappointing for this team? The runs scored is higher than their rank for BA or OBP due to the power numbers. Also, yes I consider ranking #12 in BA close to the bottom.
  16. While I'd like to see some more muscle too, Counsell certainly made a big play yesterday and saved us two runs. Maybe Hall makes that play, but not Russell. Granted, it's one play and one game, but his defense has been solid. They are giving Hardy the day off here...it's not like we have any other options at short. Although batting him 2nd just because he's playing short defies logic.
  17. So to summarize one set of stats, if the Brewers are 8th in Runs scored in the NL, yet 10th in OBP & 12th in BA...those are close enough to our ranking in BA with RISP that it's not materially different. The Brewers have a low BA & OBP so it shouldn't be any different with RISP. Maybe a better question to ask is what does it take for the Brewers to rank higher than 8th in Runs scored. Is it we're underperforming, our players are just mediocre or we're too heavily tilted to SLG vs. OBP to maximize run production? No answer here, just trying to frame a better debate than RISP. Not sure if the in-game thread is the right place, but I'll throw it out there.
  18. Was that as bad of a pitch as it showed on Gameday? Scratch that..."meatball" says it all.
  19. rluz...do you have a ranking of where exactly the Brewers stand on team BA w/RISP?
  20. I hope Yost doesn't notice...he might platoon him.
  21. There's our upside case for the Brew Crew. The 2nd best record in the NL with several key players underperforming. It would only take one or two of these guys heating up to really change things.***you beat me to the punch ueck :-)
  22. Either Gameday is off or this ump is all over the place.
  23. Only thing I wonder about is the health of the players. Getting JJ two days off may not be the worst thing if they are concerned about his shoulder. Much of his early season struggles seemed to have been related to that shoulder. After he shut it down for some (4?) games, he really heated up quick. After struggling recently, making sure that shoulder isn't the reason may be a prudent move. Pure speculation here.
