  1. This is exactly why it won't happen. The Brewers will have Prince for 3 yrs at an attractive arby rate. They don't have anyone ready to fill his shoes for 2009...maybe LaPorta for 2010, but we may need him in the OF. The Brewers are in a win now mode, and they won't be looking to trade one of their best players for prospects. Pitching or a guy like Reyes, yes...prospects, no...we already have plenty at AA.
  2. I agree with that. We still have him for another 3.5 years at a decent rate...enjoy it already Brewer Fans!!! That's a lifetime in baseball time. If a high 200's average, 35 HRs and 100 RBIs doesn't do it for you...I don't know what will...and that could be in a "down" year.
  3. If the Cubs wound up making the trade for Sabathia, who would they give up? They may have us on the money front, but I would think from the Indians perspective it's more about prospects. That has to give us the leg up if we decide we want to do it. Someone earlier cited my post as saying LaPorta is untouchable and Gamel is not. Great point about Gamel being a left handed bat and may be more valuable. My basis was purely on LaPorta being viewed as the second coming of Braun by many since he was drafted. He was also drafted high while Gamel was a 4th rounder(?). My view was more on how my guess of the value the organization places on the two versus the reality of what they are worth. Frankly, I'm not sure who will wind up being better or who is better right now...they are both lights out at AA, but I do feel the organization places (rightly or wrongly) more value in LaPorta.
  4. This interleague run has really helped us gain ground on a lot of teams. After we lost the 3 early to Boston, we've won 6 of 9 interleague and 2 of 3 from Atlanta while the rest of the NL has been getting crushed by the AL. Let's hope it keeps up.
  5. Wow...maybe it is a road game after all. That's 2 days in a row the Cubs staff is getting hammered...nice. Dempster has been a machine until today.
  6. Rooting for the Yankees and the White Sox all in one day...it still seems so unnatural.
  7. Anyone else watching on Gameday...looks like a new view box...interesting. Just another nice way to hopefully watch the Cubs LOSE!!!
  8. Sheets is listed as the starter for Sunday. I thought someone had a post that Yost thought part of the reason the pitchers are staying healthy was sticking to the rotation and getting guys that extra day of rest every so often. I'm with you though...I'd like to squeeze an extra start out of Bennie before the break. Silver Lining...it will set him up well to start the All-Star game...I think there is a reasonable chance of this happening. (I'd rather he didn't even pitch in the game)
  9. Good day for the crew...rested the pen and picked up a half game on the Cubs & Cards...nice.
  10. Hilarious...that's the first thing I thought of too. At this point, with Tavarez gone...maybe Claudio should come to Nashville. He's certainly serviceable in a pinch. Maybe the magic water down there could turn him into a sub-4 ERA guy!!!
  11. I think Ben likes it in Milwaukee and really gels with the team. My guess is it is with some sadness that he goes out and shops himself. He's not like Cordero...if it was just a 2-4 million difference, Ben would probably stay. The gap is likely to be much larger, it's just the reality of the situation. Ben is going nowhere this season barring an epic collapse in the next 3-4 weeks. If he stays healthy, he'll command big bucks and a 5-6 year deal in the off-season. The Brewers are in the situation they could afford him...but he would take up 20% of the payroll. That's a big, big bet and one they are unlikely to make. The window to re-sign him was last off-season, they passed, fully knowing if he pitched like this he'd price himself out of Milwaukee.
  12. My guess is 1) Yo 2) Soup 3) Parra 4) Either Bush, McClung or Villy, whomever pitches better down the stretch 5) Some DM unknown scrapheap FA It's a big bet on Yo being able to fill some big shoes in Sheets. I really believe Parra will develop into a solid 2/3. I don't get the Suppan hate - the guy is right on if not better than his career averages - he got the market price and has equaled expectations. He's a better #3/4 than #2. If Doug doesn't sign Sheets, he'll have to make some move.
  13. I had a somewhat similar feel, but I think its more related to him not getting an offer during the off-season when he would have been receptive to it. At this point he probably gets that his value is beyond the Brewers reach.
  14. I do think we should have signed Sheets over the off-season, but it was a tough decision for DM & Mark A given Sheets injury history. I always felt none of the injuries were arm/structural in nature so it was probably worth a shot, but I'm not privy to his medical records so who knows. For the Brewers to keep this run going, they need productive below-market players like our youngsters and can take selective shots around it. They also need to sign value and Ben was a value before the season. Their choice on Ben not to sign last offseason basically sealed his fate - he pitches well, he's unaffordable or he pitches poorly/gets hurt. Either way he was gone. The 20/20 hindsight does us no good. If we signed him and he got hurt, this thread would be calling for DM's head. At this point we have to ask, do we really want 20% of the next 5 years payroll tied up with Ben? The hope of a hometown discount is pretty slim and it's a big risk. Yo could possibly fill Sheets' spot and be a number one. The rest of our staff is doing well now, but is still a big question mark heading into 2009. With a shortage of arms at AA/AAA, we'll likely have to trade some lineup or prospect depth for a starter. I just hope Ben can give us some nice memories down the stretch and get us to that elusive playoff berth!!!
  15. Silver Lining...we go into Minny with a fresh bullpen.
  16. I like the lineup. Not too jv-ish, but gives a 2 day break to Hardy, keep that shoulder healthy...and Kendall who hasn't had a breather in quite some time. Please, please, please...no Torres today. Keep the man fresh. I'd rather see anyone else in the ninth today, even in a one run game. The guy could use a 2-day rest and we need him healthy.
  17. I wonder about skipping Parra on his next start. If Sheets goes every fifth start, he will be the first one up after the all-star game. If we skip a start by Parra (I chose him since they may want to limit his innings), we could get one extra start out of Benny before the break. Give him an extra day or two after the break (depending on what he does in the all-star game). They've done a much better job of managing the starters and pen this year. I don't feel like anyone is getting gassed at this point. Adding guys like Riske & Torres who have historical rubber arms really helped. Torres is the only guy I'm worried about at this point.
  18. It the Brewers were to make a deal for Sabathia, it seems it would just be a rental. They would sign Sheets before they would do Sabathia. If they did make the deal, LaPorta would be untouchable...I see no way they move him. It would probably look like the Linebrink deal, with a top notch guy like Gamel in place of Inman. We would get some comp picks back. It wouldn't just get us a better chance of making the playoffs, it would give us a better chance of making a run. Sheets & Sabathia could be a heckuva 1-2 punch in a 7 game series. It's not an easy decision, but chances like this don't come around every year.
  19. I second that Peavey...this has become a downward spiral with no end. The guy is flat out horrible in the field and at the plate.
  20. Horrible...go to Nashville Bill and figure it out
  21. Qualifies as a quality start by the pen
  22. Linebrink...you are dead to me
