  1. Sorry meant to say if we are contenders going in to 2012. I guess it depends on what happens in 2011. But I think he has to trade him before he loses him, therefore replenishes the system. Same with Marcum and Yo. Hopefully we can extend the new guys but if not it could be a one year window.
  2. Haha, I laugh when you say we are going to be bad for 5-7 years. If things don't pan out you can trade these guys to replenish. Even if we are contending in 2012 we might have to trade a guy like Grienke if we know we are going to lose him. As I see it we are making a run at 2011 and Doug knows he can restock what he got rid of in 2012 if he needs to. This run has been so much better than what we are used to here in Mil. You can criticize DM for moves but I just can't stand the people looking to push him out of town. This is going to be an exciting year to watch! And hey, we still have some pretty good prospects in the system and can add some more in the years to come.
  3. No, nobody is saying that, I'm just looking for reasons to discover the reasons we aren't approaching an extension. My main fear is that we deplete the system for 2 years of Greinke. That was my main concern in trading for him.And then replenish by trading him if we can't extend him. IMO getting young pitchers who are proven is the best move you can make. Even if for a year and a half, at the end you can trade them to someone else to get close to what you paid for them. It's beautiful!
  4. Haven't been able to read through this thread yet but I'm so pumped about this. DM is doing exactly what I've been calling for! We gave up a ton and I hate to see these guys go but here is why it's not as much as you think. If we can't extend these guys you can trade them at the deadline (before they are FA) and all the sudden you are reloading your system. Good young pitching is worth so much!! Between Yo, Grienke, Marcum, we can fill our system right back up, hopefully with more pitchers! I honestly love Doug for adapting and going this route. Pitching gives you consistency. Not to mention the high draft picks we will have after this year! "I'm Busting Jerry, I'm Busting!!" - GLC
  5. Hey guys, found out I'm moving to Cincinnati for a few years and was curious if any of you have been to Great American Ballpark. The first thing I thought about was that I can't wait to watch the Brewers down there! So I'm asking you guys what you think of the park and also the city. I really don't know much about Cincy but trying to figure out as much as possilbe. I currently live in Minneapolis and have spent a lot of time in Milwaukee and was curious what Cincy will be like compared to either of those cities. Thanks in advance for any help or info you can shoot my way.
  6. Point taken Highand Tight http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif I didn't mean to bundle you in with the Melvin haters. I just think some people want to run everyone we have out of town because there is a better option out there.
  7. Hiandtight, all I will say on the DM thing is that the grass is not always greener on the other side. Overall our club is in a better place then it was. Also, when you are handcuffed by money and location like DM is, it's much harder to look like a great GM. You have to make bold risky moves at times and if they backfire it hurts a lot more then if the Yankees screw up. I agree the word ace shouldn't have been used. That term is thrown around too much. Better off saying that he is close to our best pitcher, which shows that we need pitching bad. Also, someone said something about being worried if he starts to lose control. I think you have to be more worried about a power pitcher losing some velocity because typically they aren't as good at location and "pitching." They can get away with throwing because they have a power arm, once it dips they have to learn how to pitch.
  8. He's not a true ace but if he could be "our" ace, or close to it, what does that say about how desperate we are for pitching?
  9. I know this is getting a bit off but the Brewers have been in a much better place with Melvin then we were in for a long time. I know people want to give credit to many other areas but at least we now have a team that has a legit chance every year to compete. We didn't before! Let's not call for his head, he's been willing to adjust and change his methods of putting a team together. I know most fans love power hitters but bad pitching and bad defense and a lot of home runs doesn't win championships. So we are going to have to give up some of our bats to get good defense and look at some of our positions to be filled by good defense and average bats. I think DM is going in the right direction with this move and I've said this so many times, the only way for us to compete consistently is through young pitching. We finally have a few quality pitchers at the major league level. We have a lot of great youth in our pen and we have some legit SP prospects getting close to being ready. If we can add another young guy or two with Prince all the sudden we could have a pretty good staff for years to come. And guess what, pitchers can fetch prospects, so we can always trade to get a guy like Lawrie for a postion we need down the road. It's much easier to deal pitchers then postion players, remember that! Good work DM, I love where you are taking this team!
  10. I really like the deal. I really hope that we are able to sign Weeks and then this makes the deal even better for us. Couple things, there are too many people on here that have unrealistic ideas in their heads. Greinke will take Lawrie and probably two other guys. We can't afford to dish out our pitching prospects people!! That has been our biggest weak spot, young pitching from the system. We are finally bridging the gap between our your pitchers and the major leagues and if we trade some of them now it will put us in the hole for years to come. We are a medium/small market team in a location that it is not ideal for many FA's. That means the only way to get good pitching is to develop it or acquire younger guys through trade. Pitching is at an extremely high price right now after the steroid era so to get you have to GIVE!! We aren't giving the house, we aren't killing our future. We have now upgraded our starters and that has to be our main priority. Our staff was terrible the last two years and we aren't going anywhere with them. Changes had to be made and changes aren't free. Go Crew!
  11. Wow that came out of no where. I was just saying to my friend earlier that I just want a guy that can be the face/manager of our team for a long time. We can't keep having guys in and out and expect to be consistent. He's younger, so I like that. He comes from a quality team and manager, so I like that. I'm excited to give him a chance! For once can we not jump down a guys throat for every loss we have? That would be great. We have to have more talent in here before we can start complaining about why the manager loses all our games for us. That being said I'm sure glad Macha is gone and I hope this guy has more personality then a door knob.
  12. Get him some rest, get him healthy, he'll be fine.
  13. Ok a few thoughts. Diego gave us some good innings this year so I'm happy he was on the team. Glad we got some value for him. I like the move. I too would like Hart at 1b! I wouldn't mind Gomez as a backup OF because of his good Def and great arm. He'd be a good fit for RF I would think. Of course I would not mind seeing him packaged in a deal either. I think this move gives us some flexability with our lineup and roster for next year so again, good move. I still don't think we would have gotten much for JJ so let's not bash Doug. JJ hasn't done squat this year either.
  14. Happy for Teen Wolf and excited to have him in Milwaukee still. I like the short term contract. I'm glad he likes it hear and gets to stay here for now. Now let's get a pitcher or two for Prince and make some runs in 2012-14!
  15. I agree totally that trading for pitching and drafting pitching is the only way for a mid market team to compete. You then hope you get a few studs and when it comes time for them to hit FA you trade and re-stock. Because again, pitchers are the most valuable!
  16. I'm just wondering what he could have brought in. He tried to sign guys like Sabathia but we can't get the big time pitchers. All we can do is hope to get an average guy that's on his way down when it comes to FA. I know we don't have a small payroll but we don't have a huge one either. As for us not developing young pitching, how much of that is on him? We take away credit for the young offensive players we have becaue it was Jack who brought them in and we put the blame on Doug for the pitching. I don't know who he's drafted but let's make it fair on both sides. I know we do have Ax and Braddock that are young and good. Of course they are in the pen but we hopefully have some young starters coming up here and you can tell he's put more of an emphasis on pitching in the last few drafts. So I guess we'll see but it's so hard to blame him for FA signings when he's hancuffed by payroll budget and people not wanting to come to Milwaukee. So that maybe takes out the top 33%. He's got to over pay and add years on for it to be worth it for an average guy to come here so it's just setting us up for issues. He's got to be creative and I think he's done a good job of that.
  17. I think you guys are all too hard on DM. I still think he's done well with the team and his limited budget and limited pull because of the city he's in. I also think many of you think that Prince will hall in tons of prospects and are wondering why he's waiting. There just aren't offers out there for him that are good enough othewise he'd obviously take them. I think you just can't give him away. Every GM is going to be hit or miss, none of them are perfect and I think for what he has to work with he's done an above avg job.
  18. Are you trying to jinx him? Just curious.
  19. I agree we have some good pitching coming up (including what we have up in the bigs now, Ax, Bradock) but I still think you need to always add more. It just increases the odds of finding that Ace that can carry your team. Plus remember, pitching is what brings in the most value when trading. So when you have an abundance of pitchers you have a lot of options. I agree we should try to snag a bat from time to time but the kid we drafted this year is supposed to have a good bat. For me, pitchers, pitchers, pitchers. I still am in the camp that thinks we won't get a ton for Prince. We should be able to get a few good prospects but don't get all excited like we are going to fetch a handful like when the twins traded Johan. There is just not that much demand for position players.
  20. Ya I think it will be a nice addition and leaves lots of possabilities. I'm glad they continue to try and update the stadium. Now they just need to update the team!
  21. Man oh man they are ugly right now. The All Star Break can't come fast enough!
  22. Come on crew, get this one! Nothing better than listening to afternoon baseball.... Well maybe not working and listening would be better but oh well.
  23. Great win. Crew is looking good and as others said, fun to watch/listen to. Keep this going baby! Get us to 5 games.
