  1. Not sure which models you are looking at but pretty much none of them do it this way. They generally maximize runs for the entire lineup, never seen one that just focused on one person. Your best overall hitter should generally bat 2nd. Since Yelich is such a balanced hitter he is an ideal #2 guy. If he were more power heavy with lower OBP like a Khris Davis it would make more sense putting him 3rd. For the OP, your method is sound but what it is missing is the getting on base aspect. Yelich is not only the best power hitter on the team, he is the best on the team at getting on base. So you aren't just trying to maximize his PA with runners on, you want to maximize them in general. The extra PA he gets by batting 2nd are going to matter more for him than the extra PA with runners on from 3rd. If he weren't such a balanced hitter this might not hold true.
  2. People just misconstrue the strikeouts don't matter argument. Broxton put up a .229 wOBA which is awful. If he had struck out that same amount and put up his 2017 wOBA of .308 we wouldn't care about the strike outs. The strikeouts led to him being awful so they do matter. Eugenio Suarez struck out 28.6% of the time this season which is awful. He put up a .381 wOBA and 4.5 WAR which is fantastic. You can be a really great baseball player and strike out a lot, the strike outs themselves aren't what matter. It is what you do when you put the ball in play that really defines things. There are a lot of players who struck out a lot less than Suarez who were not even close to as good as him, the K's don't define a player like that. Having said that Broxton's K rate was so absurdly high that even the best player in baseball would struggle to make his stat line valuable with their balls in play.
  3. Not even a tiny bit surprised by this. The Nats were a much much better team than the Cards. Only shot the Cards had to ever make it was for the Brewers to win the Wild Card and upset the Dodgers and then crap the bed like they usually do vs the Cards.
  4. And they'll hire some big name to replace him. And then go out and spend a ton of money again. And they will be one of the darlings going into the 2020 season yet again, and fall short because they have no clue how to actually build a winning team. Just like the Mets. Wash, rinse, repeat. I don't disagree with this but Kapler really was a bad manager as well, hard to fault them for this.
  5. I don't agree with this at all. The Nats are easily a better team than the Cardinals and are the clear favorites here. Much better rotation, better lineup, just as good defense. The only advantage the Cardinals have is the bullpen.
  6. I think it is a pretty large stretch to think the tomahawk impacted the first inning of that game to the point they gave up 10 runs. I mean it would be a stretch to think it caused 1 or 2 runs, with 10 it is something way more than a stretch.
  7. Oh the intent was definitely 2 innings when he was brought in but Counsell isn't Yost, he isn't the type of guy that is sending Hader out a 2nd inning just because that is how he wanted it to go. Hader had thrown 30 pitches already, he was highly unlikely to go out for the 9th in this particular case. If Counsell had put Lyles in to face Soto I would think Counsell probably isn't the right manager for the team.
  8. http://www.espn.com/mlb/player/gamelog/_/id/32760/josh-hader Hader pitched 2 (or more) innings in 14 of his 61 appearances this year. 10 of the 14 came before the all-star break, and Josh only pitched two full innings twice after the trade deadline. It mostly worked, as Hader had 2 wins, 9 saves and a hold against 2 blown saves. I can understand Counsell's rationale for having Hader pitch multiple innings in the Wild Card game, but it wasn't the formula for most of their wins. Counsell didn't pitch Hader multiple innings in the wild card game. He brought him in for the 8th against the tough part of their lineup. If he was able to pitch 2 innings that's great, it wasn't the only option. If Hader gets soto out you would have seen someone else pitch the 9th in that game.
  9. You can disagree with the announcers, but you'd be incorrect. He was getting both of those innings. The only reason others had been closing was primarily due to days where Hader was off. Also, you know Lyles was indeed warming in the bullpen, right? If Hader gets Soto out there is no way that he pitches the 9th in that game, it just wasn't going to happen.
  10. Villar is an awful defensive SS, he was never an option there. So if Shaw doesn't stink it up there was never any reason to keep Villar and even given the results f I'd rather have Hiura. Villar would have gotten like 200 PA for this team and been worth less than 1 WAR most likely. You can't always just translate what happens on one team into what would have happened on another.
  11. You know I completely remembered him being amazing on Sundays in 2017 and I even wanted to quote it at one point on a forum. But I couldn't figure out how to find that info. Where did you get these stats if you don't mind me asking? These stats show it was just a fluke but for the life of me I couldn't figure out how to find stats by day of week.
  12. This Wild Card didn't bother me because I never thought we were in a position to win it all. Last year I thought we outplayed the Dodgers and just failed to get the last big hit we needed. That was a fun series to watch but it was also very frustrating that we didn't finish it off. These chances don't come along all that often and we genuinely could have won it all last season.
  13. When you are looking at the rotation options and going like 12 names deep there is absolutely no way that Burnes isn't on the list. It makes no sense at all to come to that conclusion. It won't surprise me if Burnes is never a useful major league pitcher but it also won't surprise me if he pitches a solid 15 games starting mid season next year. Pitching is so volatile year to year.
  14. With ya until this. Everyone except Craig Counsell knew JJ was toast. JJ had his best month of the year in September. He struggled in game 1 of the playoffs and people were already saying he was toast even though his velocity was fine. Game 2 he pitched 2 innings with 3 K and was just fine. Game 3 he came in with a 6 run lead and gave up a hit and a walk. At this point there is no way Counsell had done anything wrong and the series was over. Even with the JJ is worn out narrative in play he was then given 4 full days rest between the series which you would think for a manager resets things. Game 1 vs the Dodgers he was shaky and pulled early. Game 2 he was ok and wasn't in the game until Woodruff and Hader had already been used. Again we are now over half the way through the playoffs and Counsell has not done anything wrong here. Game 3 is the game people can complain about and question Counsell and I'm cool with that. But even in that case he was used early because they didn't trust him late in games anymore, they saved those more important innings for other RPs. He was never used in a high leverage situation after that. He did pitch in game 7 but the entire bullpen was gassed at that point and everyone had to be used. They didn't have the depth to just not use one of their guys since the SP were being pulled so early. I guess they could have asked him to fake an injury, but they weren't going to win that series without using him at all and they generally used him in lower leverage spots.
  15. There is absolutely nothing wrong with how Counsell managed the bullpen last night. There was no way you can expect more than 4 from Woodruff. Hader has come out shaky a few times in the past and almost always got it together and was fine after a few batters. If we were talking like Knebel I get it, when he starts bad he doesn't tend to get over it, Hader doesn't have that issue. Trying to use Lyles with runners on is really putting him out of his comfort zone, the righties in the bullpen were a bad matchup for Soto and we had already used Pomeranz. There was not a better option than hoping your guy makes a few good pitches. Jeffress' usage wasn't nearly as bad as people want to make it out last year in the playoffs either.
  16. You keep Nelson as a starter, that one isn't really a question. He is coming back from an injury and has shown he has a starters arsenal. The injury wasn't his arm giving out or anything either, it was flukey. It would make no sense to suddenly make him a RP unless he shows he just can't carry a starters load and it is a season or maybe two seasons too early to say that. He is guaranteed to be on the team or anything but if you keep him you have to work him as a starter until he shows he isn't one.
  17. Oh well, stinks that a part of this was a bad call by the umps on the HBP that was a foul ball. I didn't expect us to make it past this round so can't say I'm too bothered.
  18. That challenge was actually really close, the guys on TV just thought it was about the wrong thing. He almost stayed on 1B long enough for it to be an out. I sure hope that is the last we see of Suter this game. If Hader is going 2 IP we can cover 2 more innings with someone else.
  19. The 9th inning. Braun isn't finishing this game most likely and we don't have expanded rosters anymore or pitchers who can really PH. Though I guess they could do it here to start the inning to make Suter able to go deeper.
  20. The 9th inning. Braun isn't finishing this game most likely and we don't have expanded rosters anymore or pitchers who can really PH. Though I guess they could do it here to start the inning to make Suter able to go deeper.
  21. I think you have to bunt him there considering he is still coming back from an injury. You don't want him messing around hitting and possibly tweaking something in a situation where a bunt makes sense.
