  1. I have no issue with people using made the playoffs or won the triple crown as sort of a tie breaker because they think it is too close to call. What I really dislike if the analysts who say that Trout was definitely the better player but Cabrera is who I picked for the MVP. Especially in a situation where Trout's team played better baseball they just happened to be in a tougher division. To me that is just a downright awful way to spend your vote.
  2. I was reading through this thread waiting for this point to be made. Thank you. The whole "made the playoffs/triple crown" arbitrariness just blows my mind. If Josh Hamilton hits 2 more home runs is Cabrera a slam dunk? If Detroit is in the East does Cabrera win? So silly. To be fair this type of awful, terrible, inane, useless, obtuse, idiotic rational is used in all sports. It is the same as judging QBs by the number of super bowls won in football. Poor logic prevails so much when it comes to these discussion that it is just painful to have them.
  3. The Jays are as much a contender as any other AL East team at the moment. As the off season progresses the Yankees will pass them for sure but the Orioles were mostly just a fluke, the Rays are sliding at this point and the Red Sox are a mess.
  4. By this logic Austin Jackson should have finished ahead of Trout too since they don't win that division without him. If the Giants had won 3 more games then Posey would have been left off the ballot since the team didn't need him at all to still win the division. This is a pretty slippery slope to go down.
  5. They sat around 10th lowest which is higher than the county stadium days and not bad considering market sizes. Though they did dip when they brought up all the young guys a few years later.
  6. This is mostly false. If any other team begged the city for a stadium with promises of spending on the team and then gutted the team 1 year later people would be pissed. If the Brewers had kept one of the lowest payrolls in baseball after we built Miller Park most of the people on this forum would have been enraged. The one spot Loria comes into play is the assumption by everyone that he isn't going to spend any of this money he just saved. He could very well go out and sign 4 or 5 FA again this year, it is way too early to know. But given his history the assumption is he will just sit on a bad cheap roster and try to gain as much money as he can.
  7. I also like how they say Cabrera was hot late and that is why he should win it since he carried his team to the playoffs. The Angels had a better record late in the season than the Tigers, the only reason the Tigers made the playoffs is because the White Sox collapsed. Also a large part of why Cabrera was so hot is he faced the 3 of the 4 worst pitching teams in baseball almost half of his games in the last month and a half. A healthy dose of Cle, Min and KC made a lot of players look good last year.
  8. Yeah that is a good result for Braun considering last year. I figured Cabrera would blow Trout away but I thought Trout might get a few more 1st place votes. I bet if this ballot was held 15 years from now it would have been neck and neck and if it had been 15 years ago Trout probably doesn't get 2nd place. Good to see a lot of discussion on MLB network etc about how to value players though including Peter Gammons saying Trout should win which was great!
  9. The guy who voted Rodney #1 for AL CY should lose his vote~. I'm gonna have to look up who it was.
  10. You don't have to break a law to be criminal. If you are going to be a grammar Nazi at least make sure you are correct before you do it. "4. Shameful; disgraceful" They didn't have to write something specific about keeping a payroll of X but they could have put some sort of verbiage in the contract that would insure that the owner didn't just take the money and run as well. The bottom line here is that this entire situation looks like it was squarely meant to maximize the owners profit and had little to do with maximizing the talent of the baseball team and people aren't happy about it. He legally scammed Miami out of a lot of money.
  11. Braun will be left off a few ballots top 2 I'm sure as will Trout. Braun because of the off season stuff and Trout because he didn't play enough games.
  12. The margin of difference between Posey and Braun is razor thin. As long as they don't do something silly like give it to McCutchen I won't have an issue with it. This isn't a case where one player was clearly better than the other. Cabrera winning it over Trout will be a much bigger disservice than Posey winning it over Braun.
  13. Miami screwed up by not writing something into the contract about keeping a competitive team salary wise. The ownership group is criminal but they did it within the letter of the law so not much anyone can do about it.
  14. I think the specific difference is that they gave an unwritten promise to put more money into the team when they were lobbying for the new stadium and then basically spit in the face of that promise just 1 year later. This ownership group has had shady dealings in the past so they don't generally get the benefit of the doubt. From a pure baseball value standpoint the move isn't terrible.
  15. Most of his is just bullpen management which you get in the AL as well. I'm pretty clearly pro DH because player health is the most important thing and every year a dozen pitchers get hurt hitting and running the bases. Hitting isn't like other sports, you can't just step in and get 2 AB every 6 days (including off days etc) and expect a player to be a proficient hitter at the major league level. I just think it is so unlike any other part of any other sport that you can't compare it to other sports. Pitchers put up a .330 OPS last year, that just isn't enjoyable to watch and it is obvious they can't be expected to compete at it. I'm all for modifying the DH to keep PH a more integral part of the game but I'm against expect pitchers to hit.
  16. Buehrle's contract is just awful. Bonafacio's biggest plus is his versatility but he hasn't shown he can stay healthy a full season. Johnson did not look healthy last year though he muscled through it to post decent numbers in a big pitchers park. Reyes being moved is a big deal for sure but the Jays aren't getting near the value in players that I think people assume they are just from name recognition.
  17. This would bother me a lot more if this fire sale strategy hadn't won them 2 more world series than the Brewers have in their history. This isn't something new for the Marlins and like it or hate it has worked for them in the past.
  18. And by so much more depth you mean maybe 1 additional choice every 10 games or so. Most games the choice of when to replace the pitcher and who to replace him with is trivial. It adds a ton to big games where you micro manage a ton but normal day to day games really don't have that much strategy involved.
  19. Yum for Brewer hitters.
  20. We will just disagree then. Aoki put up a highly mediocre season for a corner OF and he exceeded my personal expectations. If we go into the season with Gomez and Aoki penciled in full time with no real backup plan it could derail the entire OF pretty easily. I think the bullpen and at least one reliable full time starter are the top priorities but a solid backup OF is right up there as the next most important thing we find.
  21. Not just for sports but in general there is a strong correlation with back problems and height. It puts a lot of extra pressure on your spine. Dunno what it translates into for baseball though.
  22. Same comment that Nottso made above. It would only apply to the starting pitcher, you still would need to double switch with RP and when you actually took your SP out mid inning etc.
  23. Hard to complain about Headley. The higher OBP offsets the SLG and the park factor heavily favors him.
  24. Not a bad idea at all. Another option is to allow you to PH for your starting pitcher but not take him out of the lineup. You still get the strategy of when to burn bench slots and when not to but you only leave your pitcher in to bat in situations where it doesn't really impact the game as much.
  25. The Goalie is a defensive only position... Didn't think it was that complicated.
