    I don't trust Bauer, especially since they were trading him after the injury. Choo in CF is a pretty bad idea so I don't see how this helps the Reds all that much. If they had a real CF and he was playing in a corner OF I like him a lot more than Stubbs.

    Yeah I don't see them going with a rotation of 3 guys who can't go 200 innings. Estrada is much more likely to be in that mix.

    The Suppan deal was a lot like what we need this year. We had a bunch of young pitchers and we just needed someone to eat up innings while they all got adjusted to pitching full seasons in the major. The money was too much but a lot of mediocre pitchers got that same type of contract during that time frame. I totally understood the reasoning behind the deal. The real big issue with Suppan was the 4th year. A declining pitcher who didn't have a stellar skillset to start with is just way too risky to go 4 years on. Plus we had pretty bad defensive teams so he just wasn't the right type of pitcher to go after.

    Baseball can definitely do more to even the playing field it just isn't as big a deal as the actual dollars make it look like. If you actually look at year to year competitiveness over the past 10 seasons baseball isn't much different than any other sport. The NFL looks like it has a lot of parity but that is more because of the short schedule and the fact it is unbalanced to help weaker teams as much as anything. There are all kinds of good ideas thrown around for improving the sport but a hard cap won't work just because of the games structure. It is more balanced than it was 5 years ago so things have headed in the right direction even if they aren't there just yet.

    The Wolf deal was fine (albeit a no upside deal), he just got hurt the 3rd year. Gagne was a bad deal but it was for 1 year which makes it hard to be too bad. Suppan's deal I understand the reasoning behind it, but it was still pretty awful. The trade for Linebrink was pretty bad but in general the guys we traded away haven't been too impressive so far in the majors. People will bring up Cruz but outside of Texas he has barely been above replacement level so it is hard to know what he really is.

    The Royals gave a lot of AB to some of the worst players in baseball last year. Dumping Francoeur is the most obvious upgrade they could make, dumping Betancourt helps too. Having Hosmer play more to expectations is another big upgrade as is having a healthy Perez and Cain all year. Their rotation was just awful last year and didn't look like it would be much better this year considering these are pretty established awful pitchers. This team could easily jump to a winning team with just a couple more moves.

    Stats won't really help in deciding what Aoki is because the sample is just too small and we have no idea how he will adjust to pitching and how pitching will adjust to him. The range of outcomes for Aoki next year is just huge. He could be useless, he could be an all star, he could be anywhere in between. That is why i definitely think we need to hedge our bets a little bit and get a solid #4. Especially considering we don't really know whether Gomez can hold up full time either.

    If baseball adopted a hard salary cap the Brewers would stand no chance, it actually would not end up helping mid market teams. A salary cap helps the really low end teams and the top end teams and screws over the middle tier. The NHL doesn't have a league right now because the salary cap screwed things up so much. Not exactly a good example to point at. A salary cap works somewhat in football because of the league is structured, it simply would not work in baseball. The Dodgers have the highest payroll in baseball, they don't have the best team in baseball. 5 years from now they will still have the highest payroll in baseball and I'm not sure that roster will be one that can put up a winning season since they spent so much on aging talent 5 years out.

    The GMs who gave Cordero and Lee their deals deserve to be fired, they were just bad deals. Sabathia was more reasonable and while I think the Greinke deal is for too much it isn't just awful.

    Different sports are really different. In baseball the better teams (high payroll) pay a lot more per win than the lower payroll teams, it is just how the minors vs FA works. In the NFL the better teams pay less per win. Players actively take paycuts to play in a larger marker team for endorsements or a proven winner for their shot at the playoffs. Of course in the NFL the average player plays for so few years and contracts aren't guaranteed so it is hard to screw up too badly. Look at year to year winning percentage in every sport and baseball doesn't really look much different than any other sport. The same teams make the NFL playoffs year after year, the same teams dominate NBA, the same teams seem to be in it in baseball. The difference between the best team and the worst team is generally lowest in MLB out of any sport by winning percentage. Every year a few low payroll teams are in the playoffs or just miss the playoffs. I like that this is the Dodgers. They haven't been relevant for years and I think this is going to buy them a playoff run or two and then they will absolutely crash and burn and be awful but with a huge payroll. Should be fun to watch. Thing is even with that payroll they might be the 3rd best team in their division. That's baseball.

    I was very anti EJ last year because his stats didn't seem sustainable at all and he has always been way overrated. He turned in a pretty good year last year and wouldn't mind taking a stab at him, though there is no way I pay him $14 a year.

    I'm not as down on this trade as most, mostly because I don't think Myers will end up being a super star. I also think the Tigers are a high 80s win team and not much more so the AL central is up for grabs still since it is a pretty awful division. I wouldn't have done it if I were the Royals but I don't think it is as awful as suggested. For the Rays it is a great deal though since they are trading from a position of depth and got exactly what they needed, high upside prospects who will stay cheap for a long time.

    The fact the Rangers are covering a huge part of his salary actually makes this deal look decent though I still think there is a decent chance Young is just done.

    The Dodgers are not exactly a high stress environment. I honest believe he would have chosen this deal for the Dodgers over a slightly higher cash deal from NYY or BOS. Players do sign for more than money but the money does have to be there. Not like he was going to take 2 years at $15 just because he likes Milwaukee. We would have had to be in the same ballpark to have a shot.

    He is an awful fit for the Brewers but I would have liked the risk vs reward factor. We really do need at least one reliable 200+ inning guy though considering everyone after Gallardo is probably capped under a full season.

    Young has been consistently been above average over his entire career so suggesting he is terrible probably suggests a lack of understanding talent. Having said that he is old and last year was a pretty clear decline season so I wouldn't be looking to trade for him personally.

    I would rather have Worley and May than Gomez and I wouldn't really have to think twice about it.

    The bullpen is where guys who aren't panning out as starters usually end up. I think they probably give too long a leash to their starters in the low to mid minors. A combination of very few major league starters and almost no major league bullpen arms coming out of a system is a sign of doing something very wrong. Some of those failed starters should at least be making it as bullpen types.

    I like this deal for the Twins. I like Revere as well but I think that is giving up a lot for him.

    Yeah I don't mind the Burnett deal either. I just think you build a bullpen with young arms from your minor league system. I think we might be the worst team in all of baseball at developing pitchers into relievers though.

    The problem is the same set of guys blew almost no saves the year before. What you get with a RP is just so high variance it is hard to convince me that spending a lot on anyone but the total studs is worth it.

    I wouldn't give up a lot to get him to be honest. I don't think the 4.71 career ERA is really all that much of a fluke. Moving out of the AL and out of that park helps obviously but I still think he is a below average starter with a pretty thin margin of error on the upside. It won't surprise me if he has a Dave Bush career.

    The real issue with this is it isn't consistent. The top 5 bullpens in baseball can bring back all the same guys and suddenly be below average bullpens the next year. Everyone but the absolutely stud RPs just vary way too much year to year to rely on.

    I also think he is an improved version of Loe mostly because he isn't quite as useless vs LHP, he is younger and he hasn't had career long struggles with LOB% like Loe has so far.

    Manny's stats spiraled down as soon as he got hurt pure and simple. He lost velocity and control with the injuries. No reason to try to read a bunch of stuff into it.
