  1. That surprises me. Lets just say the only issue then is that Victorino seems to physically be banged up and somewhat worn down and Ross seems like he hasn't played full time because of flaws in his game not getting him full time play. I trust Ross's health more, I think Victorino is significantly better as a player and would take him easily at these prices. Though to be fair his defensive value takes a hit playing in Fenway.
  2. Victorino has been better than him each of the past 7 years and a few of those years he has been significantly better. The only issue with Victorino is the age otherwise it is a complete slam dunk.
  3. I'd much rather have Victorino.
  4. If the young pitching steps up the team is in good shape so I don't think a full rebuild is warranted. We can't do a true rebuild because it wastes the rest of Ryan Braun unless we trade him which loses the fan base. Most prospects take at least 1 year in the majors to really start to pan out so the only deal that makes any kind of sense is Hart for someone who can be up and help this season. We already have enough young pitching so can't really trade for that, don't want to trade Hart for a RP so that leaves a deal of Hart for a major league ready position player as the only deal I think makes sense. Not exactly an easy deal to find. I think they see how the young pitching does the first half of the season, if it keeps us in it we just go for it, if it looks bad we trade our last seasons assets mid season.
  5. They probably realize his arm is shot given what his peripherals looked like last year. He had an awful year last year that was masked by some luck in the ERA.
  6. What an awful deal for the DBacks.
  7. I think you have to see what you have until near the trade deadline and if the young pitchers aren't doing well then you look at trading the offensive pieces that won't be around next year. I do agree that the roster is in sort of an awkward spot right now, it is a team that could make he playoffs or could sit around .500. I really believe we can't waste years of Braun though so I'd rather just hope the young pitching comes fast.
  8. They added Nate Schierholtz today. Still not worried about them. That is a lot of money for a very mediocre looking group of players.
  9. That Cub's team earned their record last year. It wasn't one of these teams that just have a bunch of injuries, lose a bunch of tight games or have a bunch of guys play below their level. This was a legit terrible team. It is going to take them some work to get back up to a .500 team talent level.
  10. It is hard to give up the dream of talent for organizations even when injuries derail that talent, especially when the players get back the velocity but not the control/movement. Parra was never the same after his injuries and Liriano has never been the same either.
  11. Dan Haren for 1 year is a better investment and they are 5 deep with some prospects already so what good would EJ do them? They are looking at a lot of money being spent on extensions in the near future, EJ just ties up money they could spend better elsewhere in the next few years.
  12. Nice move. I personally think his days as a good pitcher are over but if he finds the magic elixir and gives the Pirates a true top end starter it does wonders for that team.
  13. They would have to add another 4 or 5 guys to make me worried about them as contenders. Between the Astros leaving and the Cubs and Pirates improving it does make it harder and harder to get enough wins for the wild card games though.
  14. Not to mention they just don't need him and they are struggling to re-sign/extend some of their offense right now which is the priority. EJ just doesn't make much sense for the Nats.
  15. Yeah I think he is worth that much more. Part of it is the increase in value of wins as you get higher in WAR, part is because I don't really believe in EJ, part is because I think circumstance has really made Greinke look worse than he has pitched. I think if you talk true talent I think Greinke is a low to mid 3 ERA pitcher and Jackson is a high 3 to low 4 pitcher. So for my money there is a 0.50 ERA difference in value here and as you approach the elite end of the spectrum the price tag just goes through the roof.
  16. Sure if you ignore the fact Greinke pitched with a bad defense in a hitters park in a hitters division and Jackson pitched in a pitchers park with one year having a really good defense behind him and the other having an average one or the fact that Greinke goes deeper into games. I am not a fan of pitching WAR at all but the 2.5 WAR difference over the past 2 seasons speaks volumes to me especially when you consider Greinke was hurt for part of one year.
  17. If he can pitch to his peripherals that is a solid deal for the Cubs. He hasn't shown the ability to do that thus far and that isn't a good defense or a good pitchers park so not sure I buy that he can.
  18. Yeah I like this move a lot too assuming we didn't throw silly money at him. I like that he can start or pitch in relief, he seems to be improving and it is nice to add a LHP.
  19. I'd give the edge to Jackson. He seemed to honestly improve last year. CV just gives up too many HR to ever be a good pitcher.
  20. They are close on Edwin Jackson too which isn't a great fit but it still does make them a better team.
  21. I would rather have Morales but lets be honest here, Vargas is still pitching the majority of his games in pitchers parks and with a good defense behind him. I don't think the change in venue will change much for him.
  22. I don't think he started with a building from within strategy though. I think he started with a rebuild the fanbase strategy. He didn't trade Sexson for a bunch of upside guys, he traded him for a bunch of guys that could put some wins on the team. He traded Carlos Lee for established big league players to put wins on the field. He didn't hold out on the young players trying to maximize their years on the major league roster, he rushed almost every single one of them to the majors. Everything Melvin did in his first seasons was aimed at rebuilding the fanbase. Nothing he did seemed aimed at building from within.
  23. It goes both ways though. Maybe the young pitcher we get doesn't pan out like most of them don't. When you have a window to win you generally have to make moves for the short term. There is nothing wrong with somewhat mortgaging the future to try to go for it during the window that having Braun and Fielder together had created. We can nitpick the deals all we want and if you look hard enough you will find flaws with any deal but overall our GM has put us in a position to contend over a pretty wide window which is something the team hasn't had for a pretty long time now. I can't make any large scale complaints about things given that. Most GMs seem to agree that the worst position you can be in is to have a mediocre team and that is what we have if we don't make the trades. A team that takes a perfect storm to make the playoffs but which will be good enough that it won't get great picks in the draft. That team would just be eating up Braun and Fielder's time for no good use. When you are in that situation you either go into rebuild mode or you go into 'go for it' mode. Unless this crop of pitchers really steps up this year we will be in that same situation next year and that time I think we'll probably end up back in rebuild mode since we don't have the prospects or money to enter 'go for it' mode.
  24. I would think that if we get off to a bad start we would trade Hart/Gomez mid season. Braun is a once in a lifetime type of player so I think Melvin is almost obligated to do whatever he can to put winning teams on the field while we have him. He creates a special window of competitiveness for us that we can't really waste with rebuilding.
  25. We had Axford and KRod and a bunch of question marks going into last season and those two had their own warts, there was no quality depth at all. I searched for posts about it going into last year but this is all I could find. viewtopic.php?f=63&t=27699&p=772458&hilit=bullpen#p772458 We lost guys from the 2011 bullpen and just hoped that someone would emerge to replace them but we didn't exactly have a lot of raw talent. Loe, Dillard, Parra, Braddock were all guys I had no faith in and the guys behind them seemed pretty low upside for young bullpen arms. Veras seemed like just a filler arm as well. I figured we would struggle a lot in games that didn't go KRod - Axford and if one of those guys got hurt we would have real problems. The fact they both stunk for much of the year really brought that lack of depth into play. I never understood how people looked at the bullpen as a strength going into last year, I just didn't expect it to be a weakness. It was just a really mediocre bullpen on paper, one that shouldn't blow many saves but should have some problems getting to the 8th inning. Of course we ended up with exactly the opposite problem so what do I know~.
