  1. I'm in group 3 but I still don't agree he has been serviceable~. He hasn't made any errors yet but unless the ball is hit directly at him he doesn't make a play. He is like watching Ray Durham that last year he was with the Brewers, I cringe every time the ball is hit his way because I know if the ball isn't directly at him it is a single.
  2. May 4th would be the first day back apparently.
  3. Number 4 is really a Melvin thing. We don't have a viable full time #2 hitter when Morgan isn't in the lineup so that explains #3. I assume you meant vs righties in #5, Morgan is terrible against lefties? I like when Gomez and Morgan or a pitcher bunts. Even though our pitchers are decent hitters they still stink as hitters and hit the ball on the ground way too much. Gomez and Morgan can both beat bunts out for hits so it makes their bunts a lot more valuable. Other guys pretty much never should bunt though.
  4. Yeah I didn't even know they had BIS data on that site. For the longest time they only used total zone so I stopped looking at the site at all for defense.
  5. Really depends on the stats you like. FIP and WAR(at least when based on FIP) are pretty weak stats for pitchers for my money and even if you use something like xFIP you have to look at career trends between xFIP and ERA and make a manual adjustment to get a lot of value out of it. I'd say Wolf was better than Suppan in his first year but yeah Wolf's year wasn't great, he struggled for way too much of the first half. They might regret the 3rd year but that isn't nearly as big a deal as Suppan where they regretted 2.5 years of the deal.
  6. Yes that is total zone. Baseballreferense uses total zone if you mouse over the stat you'll see it. Also yes we are being objective, trying to cling to a stat that has no value over 11 games to make your argument isn't going to help. Total zone is not objective for 11 games, it is useless for 11 games. A player can be terrible in an 11 game sample and come out good on total zone because of the way it works. We have all watched the games and most of us agree he has displayed a complete lack of range that is going to hurt the team over time. How good or bad he has been just depends on how much you personally weigh errors vs range in your mind. Edit : Ok noticed the BIS line, that one actually has value for measuring how he has been this year because of the way they do it. I'm not a big fan of BIS in general but it is much more granular so that part of your argument does make sense at least.
  7. No I'm not confused. The sample size is so small as to basically be random, it isn't telling you how he has played even. The way total zone is calculated is dubious in the first place but it is pretty much worthless with only small samples of data.
  8. But it doesn't, 11 games of defensive stats don't show anything at all. It takes 3 years of defense to give a strong stat based correlation, using less than 10% of a single season doesn't say anything at all, especially using the one you are using which is completely flawed in the first place. If he plays defense like this all year I expect him to cost us 9 or 10 runs on the year, he moves like a brick and has let a number of singles go right by him that most SS stop at the very least if not make the play on them.
  9. Yeah I think Fielder gets close to the same per year but more like a 5 year contract and I think Baltimore makes a ton of sense. Their pitching is hitting the majors now and their lineup could really use a big bat in the middle.
  10. Of course in JJ's situation the knock on him was pretty much always wrong. Hardy's didn't look athletic while playing so people assumed he had no range. Betancourt just can't move at all. As for UZR, 11 games of defense is so meaningless they haven't bothered including it yet. You can't judge defense with stats over such a small sample, you really do need to use the scouting angle for small samples. Keep in mind UZR/150 suggests he only costs the team around 8 runs per season, the defense alone isn't why he is so bad. He is also one of the worst hitters in baseball because of the low OBP. He could somehow play average defense this year and still be one of the worst starters at SS in baseball.
  11. I would trade Betancourt straight up for every single one of these names and for a number of the backups for these players as well. He really is just terrible and we could have replaced him for league minimum most likely.
  12. Hard to be too bothered by a pair of singles, would have been nice to not have the walk though.
  13. Tonight's game is an example of the difference between Wolf and Suppan. Wolf can actually be somewhat dominating when things go right, Suppan was just at the whim of the ball being hit right at fielders since he couldn't strike anyone out.
  14. Well he is a slap hitter with speed, he is largely going to be at the whim of BABIP so when balls are falling he'll look great and when they aren't he'll look bad. He also can't hit lefties at all. But against RHP he is a solid little player.
  15. Nice to see how much fun the guys are having even when something goes wrong and a guy gets thrown out. Last year they really didn't look like the game was fun.
  16. Scioscia has kept Mathis around forever even though he is one of the worst hitters in major league history. Wouldn't surprise me if Roenicke followed suit and prized defense over offense.
  17. I think he has been pretty terrible, like he has bricks in his pants. Haven't seen him make a play that wasn't right to him though if the play is right to him he seems to do a decent job. I can pretty easily see why he costs his teams 8 or 9 runs a year from his poor range.
  18. Having holes are fine but having black holes that can be replaced with players on the roster or easily through free agency is not. Starting Betancourt every day is as bad a decision as going into the season with Suppan penciled in as the #5 starter would have been this year. http://www.fangraphs.com/...nth=0&season1=2008&ind=0 From 2008 through today Betancourt has been the 2nd worse full time player in the majors and it is pretty inexcusable that we went into the season with him as our SS. Sure if we go to the playoffs nobody will remember the bit players but when we miss the playoffs by a game or two you can probably point directly at these guys as the reason we didn't make it and these are players that could have easily been replaced.
  19. Bonds most productive seasons were when he was getting the Bonds treatment. Putting players on base is rarely a wise move even when they are the best hitters on the team.
  20. Unfortunately this is an issue of mismanaging the team. The first mistake was not replacing Betancourt before the season started, he has been close to the worst full time player in baseball over the past 3 seasons and might actually be the worst. There is no excuse for this team to go into the season with this clown starting, Luis Cruz would have been an upgrade. The second mistake was putting Kotsay and Reed on the roster. Again these players are below replacement level, there is no reason that a no hit, no field player should be on a playoff team, at least Reed can field a little bit but we still stuck with Kotsay who is useless. These guys can be upgraded for peanuts and don't deserve spots on major league rosters much less being the backup plan for injuries. Every time they start Kotsay over Morgan they are costing the team part of a win. I'm not worried at all about McGehee, he might not play like he did the last two years but he is hardly going to be the problem with the roster, he'll be in that .750+ OPS range most likely by end of season. Gomez should probably sit every day against RHP once Hart is back, Morgan is just a better player. I don't have a huge issue with Gomez, he can't hit but he is good enough defensively to offset it but Morgan is just better.
  21. That adjustment is really working well so far for Pujols this year isn't it.
  22. I think he comes up to play a mix of 1B and DH to give Fielder some days off from the field and then gets a late season call up to help out for the playoff run. So I'd guess more like 100-150 PA tops.
  23. He cut his strikeouts down some late last year, maybe he made an adjustment and carried it over to this season.
  24. There is a pretty big difference with Saito for me though. Unlike Riske and Hawkins, Doug only gave Saito a one year deal and at a moderate salary. So even if worst case Saito is injury prone all year, i won't say anything bad about Melvin signing Saito. I thought it was a great signing at the time, unlike the Riske and Hawkins signings which were for multiple years at a higher salary. Plus Saito is a legitimately good RP unlike Riske and Hawkins who seem to never quite have the peripherals to back up their ERA so you were never sure if they were good or not in the first place. My issue with Riske and Hawkins was more that if they stayed healthy they might not be worth their contracts, not that they happened to get hurt.
  25. Assuming Greinke does come back at the end of April and our rotation sets up differently because of this rain out does it mean Estrada only gets 1 more start most likely?
