  1. A player who cuts down on his strike outs becomes a better player in general (as long as he isn't losing signifcant power doing it etc). So yeah strike outs are a bad thing. However if you just compare Mike Cameron to someone who puts up the same rate stats but strikes out 50 times less the difference between the two is marginal at best.
  2. http://www.hardballtimes....the-best-babip-estimator/ Not surprising at all to me the method of just taking LD% and changing it into expected BABIP came out as the worst system, even worse than just looking at BABIP itself. This doesn't surprise me since LD% blips are a large part of what drives BABIP blips in the first place imo!.
  3. http://newyork.yankees.ml...mp;fext=.jsp&c_id=nyy 1 year 5.5M with up to 12M after incentives. One less team in the hunt for Sheets, I can't see the Rangers taking the risk just to push them into 2nd or 3rd place.
  4. Smoltz, Glavine, Ripken, Biggio, Berkman, Halladay, Chipper, Hunter(11 years) to name a few recent ones. Football careers are generally shorter and it is really only the QB that sticks with his team long most of the time, maybe a few RB but they almost always burn out young.
  5. So we would have majorly downgraded at CF and have a hole at 3B? Cameron signing isn't the problem here, Hall not being good at baseball is. Cameron was worth his salary last year and I'm sure he will be next year too. Using fangraphs numbers as a guide which include positional adjustments here was the value of our players last year in dollars. Hardy - 23.8M Cameron - 17.4M Braun 17.2M Fielder 12.1M Weeks 8.6M Kapler 7.2M Kendall 6.4M Hart 5.9M Counsell 5.4M Branyan 4.9M Hall 4.9M My guess is those numbers are assuming inflation this year instead of deflation so they are all a bit high but Cameron very easily was worth his extension.
  6. Not to mention Griffey is a poor fielder at this point, he really needs to be in a platoon preferably as a DH somewhere.
  7. Football ratings are higher than baseball because the sport is more popular. This is probably largely because of the average attention span of the american TV viewer. I would hope we can agree that just being popular doesn't make something better and it doesn't make me 'wrong' for not liking it as much. Football to me is a casual sport, you have fun watching a game and then you forget about the sport completely until there is the next game to watch. Baseball is a lifestyle, I check out what happened in baseball every day of the year even during the offseason. I used to feel more like that about football but direction it has gone has really taken the passion out of the game for me.
  8. Nicely put Cricks28. That sums up what I feel about the NFL now, it just isnt' interesting to follow the game at all compared to before the salary cap.
  9. They need a utility IF if they trade him and they probably could use a bullpen arm still.
  10. That doesn't really say anything is wrong with his arm, just that they want more recent medical records because they got burned by Jennings with something similar. I still think if the arm was as large a concern as people think it is he would have just taken arbitration. Makes no sense to try to go free agent if they know something is wrong with his arm.
  11. The Rays went to the world series last year 2nd lowest salary in baseball and the Yankees, Tigers and Mets all missed the playoffs with the highest 3. The Marlins have won 2 world series in recent years with the lowest payroll in baseball. The Lions aren't anywhere near more competitive than the Pirates are so even the bottom teams aren't really any different. Honestly if you think that every team is equal in the NFL you are being a bit naive.
  12. Suppan always has a lot of ups and downs, that is just how GB pitchers with mediocre stuff are. For me his most telling stats are how he finished the season. With just 5 starts to go he was sitting at a 4.49 ERA, .817 OPS against, 4.5 K/9, 3.3 BB/9. His 06/07 numbers were 4.12/4.62 ERA. 4.93/4.96 K/9, 3.27/2.96 BB/9, .784/.801 OPS against. In other words he was right in line with his past 2 seasons going into the final few weeks of 2008. Then he gave us a line of 8.44 ERA, 1.110 OPS against for the last 5 starts. I don't think he really slipped per se, he just either had a rotten finish or was trying to pitch through some tiredness/soreness because the team was in a pennant race. I'm not going to say the guy is finished based on 5 starts outside his norm at the end of the season. Suppan is most likely what he has always been a 4.50-5.00 ERA pitcher who can go sub 4.50 with good defense or a little luck which makes him a #4 starter on most teams.
  13. Soria had 42 saves and 3 BS last year and Valverde had 44 saves and 7 BS and neither of those teams had SP that are any better than what we have now, so my guess is around 45-50 times.
  14. Here is what Shandler has to say about the rotation. Gallardo - 178 IP, 3.50 ERA. Elite skill set and knee should not be a big issue. Parra - 180 IP, 3.91 ERA. If he finds an out pitch vs RH upside 3.25 ERA, 200 K. Bush - 189 IP, 4.20 ERA. Mentions how strong his supporting skills looked in 2nd half which makes him interesting for fantasy again. Suppan - 189 IP, 4.87 ERA. Skillset is pedestrian. McClung - 81 IP, 4.70 ERA. Poor indicators, stay away. This projection is obviously as a RP too, as a starter that would be worse. Looper - 198 IP, 4.19 ERA. Sheets - 174 IP, 3.41 ERA. Wolf - 174 IP, 4.66 ERA. This mostly agrees with my opinions. Gallardo is a future ace, Parra is a fugure #2 starter, Bush is a solid #3. Suppan and McClung fit fine into a 4/5. As long as every pitcher stays healthy the rotation will be ok this year. That really isn't likely to happen at all and we really need to add a decent arm for some depth.
  15. Was reading BPro today and they had the nats top prospects so here is what they said about Zimmerman. 4 star prospect Perfect World Projection: He'll be very good third starter. Glass Half Empty: Most think that's a pretty safe bet, so at worst he should be a fourth or fifth starter. The Bad: It's hard to criticize Zimmermann other than to point out that he's not exactly dominant. All of his pitches are good, but he lacks that one knockout offering to project as an upper-tier talent http://www.baseballprospe...rticle.php?articleid=8434 Salome also came in as a 4 star. I still think they are pretty even though Zimmerman is probably more of a sure thing.
  16. I'd say the ability to get on is way more important than getting a hit for a pinch hitter. Generally speaking if you are pinch hitting it is because you had a weak hitter at the plate and since you went to the bench you probably brought a weak hitter into the game. The majority of the time the next guy up is going to be better than either option.
  17. If Hart is struggling it is going to be against right handed pitching and not left handed. Macha hopefully won't be like Yost and will be willing to pinch hit with Rivera late in games. I find it hard to believe that this will be a big deal other than maybe Mike Lamb or Craig Counsell occassionally facing an extra lefty.
  18. That is strange. While watching mlb network the other day they said that Sheets was by far the most talented FA SP left if he is healthy so they have mentioned him some.
  19. Great hitter, bad fielder, good guy. I also agree the weight thing is so overblown, his defense was the same last year as in the past and his offense for most of the season was exactly what I expect, he had a bit of a down year and people just look for something to blame when that is just how baseball works.
  20. It would take an average hitter who played amazing defense to match Fielder, not just good defense. Overbay as an example was not as valuable as Fielder in 2008 even in his best season.
  21. The biggest problem with this thread is somehow blaming 2008 on his conditioning which is a flawed statement at best. Fielder put up a .922+ OPS in 3 of the last 4 months of the season, he slumped a bit early but there is no reason to think that this is some new level of production brought on by weight fluctuation. That is completely people grasping at straws to explain a dip in production. Most likely he just had more slumps than hot streaks which happens to every major league player every few years.
  22. Sickels highest Brewer was Gamel as a B+ prospect, everyone else was B or lower. We don't really have any top end prospects right now in my opinion. Gamel and maybe Jeffress are the only guys who strike me as having star potential instead of just decent every day player potential. Gamel's defense will likely stop him from reaching a higher level and there are just a lot of question marks around Jeffress right now.
