  1. Turnbow is the perfect case for why you shouldn't trust a single season of RP data. (I'm looking at you Grant Balfour). Anyone can get hot for 50 innings and that is all it takes to make a RP look great for a single season. I have nothing against the guy but he just isn't a good pitcher.
  2. To add to this he hasn't just had one recurring problem either. Harden has something like 5-6 different points of injury on his arm/shoulder. The odds of him staying healthy for even half a season are really low. They might get lucky of course but most likely you are looking at 100 IP or so out of him. The reason the Miles signing is bad was because they had plenty of mediocre MI with more upside than Miles. Fontenot, DeRosa, Theriot, Cedeno. Trading DeRosa for prospects to make room for Miles is a clear downgrade unless those prospects can help this year and I don't think they were expected to.
  3. Fielder is at most 2 wins below average on defense and that is making an assumption that he is costing everyone else some fielding. It would be a big improvement but not anywhere near 10 wins.
  4. My opinion of him hasn't changed since we traded him, poor contact skills, lots of power, mediocre plate discipline. He is Dunn without nearly as many walks and only a 1B or DH in the field. In the NL he basically had no value at all, in the AL he has some.
  5. We need a SP, we could use a RP, it would be nice to sign a 3B. The SP is really the only deal that worries me a lot if it doesn't happen because we just don't have the depth right now that we need.
  6. I'd hand the job to CV most likely but I'd like to get another arm or two regardless.
  7. I don't cringe when a ball is hit to Durham, I just assume if it isn't right at him it is a single. He was much worse defensively than Weeks last year in my opinion.
  8. 2007 was the same actually, some systems loved him and some said he was average to below average. I think he certainly is the type of player that shows how far we still need to go in defensive metrics. I'd say the systems are pretty close on the majority of players, Hardy is one of the biggest outliers.
  9. Of course you can't just throw out some of the data for baseball for personal reasons and the football markets work a little different since it is all about endorsement value which is partially a function of market size but partially of winning history (the Lions are a 'small market team' in football as an example). Not to mention it is a LOT easier for a mediocre team to make the playoffs in the NFL, a 7-9 team with 2 lucky bounces can make the wild card while a sub .500 talent team in baseball has almost no chance at the playoffs. Also football has a greater percentage of teams in the playoffs each season than baseball. I think if you really want to compare them you would look at teams that didn't come anywhere close to making the playoffs. Teams that were at least 2 STDs away from a playoff shot. The Lions went 0-16 last year, when was the last time a baseball team went 0-162, just sayin.
  10. U-verse internet stinks though so I'd say they are even at best.
  11. Yeah they aren't as reliable but you just listed the least reliable fielding stats in baseball, bit confusing for your point I think. Any advanced fielding metric is more reliable than anything you just listed.
  12. Eckstein was a better hitter and fielder than Miles and plays a tougher position. The Cubs are probably 1-2 games worse than the team they fielded last year. They downgraded the bullpen, downgraded the lineup and to be honest I won't be surprised if the rotation isn't as good as last year with Zambrano's injury concerns and Dempster not that likely to repeat. If Harden manages to stay healthy the entire year it will probably still be an upgrade over last season but if he goes down I think they are worse than last year in every aspect of the game except fielding. Add in the fact it is an old team and will probably lose a little OPS here and there and I just don't see the Cubs being world series favorites. They will be a good team, will probably win the division and then in the playoffs anything can happen.
  13. Still on that Cameron soap box I see, you make it sound like Melvin is desperately trying to get rid of him or something instead of one team approaching him about a trade and not offering enough.
  14. CV is my choice for closer as well.
  15. So the Cubs added at best like 1/10th of a win with this deal and probably actually are downgrading the team if he even plays. I'm supposed to feel bad about this?
  16. Most systems show Hardy as one of the best defensive SS in the game though there was one that didn't like him much(Dial's I think it was). I never could figure out how the systems differ such that they disagree on him so much. Seems like players like him are the poster boys for fielding metrics and how to improve them. I mean all systems think Fielder stinks, just a matter of how much but when some systems think a guy is a gold glover and others think he is average then obviously something is fishy.
  17. As far as I'm concerned, Suppan is a AAAA scrub, albiet one making eight figures. You can think what you want but the facts are you are completely wrong. Even in his worst year which was last year he was above replacement level and he has not been too far off league average in his time as a Brewer.
  18. I should hope they can't suspend him 3 years after it happened.
  19. Catchers with bad knees at a young age generally don't stick at the position, especially ones that can hit enough to fill another position
  20. Griffey is a downgrade from Hart so I sure hope they don't go that path.
  21. I don't know if the regular programming will be any good but I absolutely love the stuff they are running tonight. All the greatest moments in baseball, many I remember from a kid and many I didn't get a chance to see because it is just hard to find old time footage of baseball without really looking hard for it.
  22. I am not a Penny fan at all but yeah at $5M+ incentives I wouldn't have minded him adding depth to our rotation.
  23. But of course he isn't and Sanchez hasn't proven he can control his stuff so could easily be a #5 starter still, Lincecum will likely have a letdown season after the abuse he took last year and RJ is aging very fast and struggles to pitch out of the stretch. This staff is going to carry that team to about 75 wins which is why this deal doesn't really make much sense unless the Giants get some hitting.
  24. Yes that is exactly how it works and it is why the payroll differences aren't usually as bad as they look as the large market teams generally have more money tied up on washed up/injured vets. The yankees have an extremely hard time developing young talent and overpay to get veterans rarely getting their moneys worth out of the contract. Same thing happens with teams that are in the dumps, nobody wants to sign with them as a FA and they have to overpay which is why it is so important for the Brewers to stick in that .500 range for a while.
