  1. I didn't necessarily say that the playoff race was the reason he stunk. I just pointed out that he did, in fact, stink. We were in a playoff race, and Jenkins didn't hit worth a hill of beans. Considering how often people rave about his late-season hot streaks, we could have really used one this September. I certainly think our veteran leader's inability to help the Brewers during the pennant chase is a legitimate topic for discussion. If you want to believe it's random coincidence that he hit so poorly this year as opposed to other years, be my guest. That doesn't change the fact that it happened. Sorry I was responding to this comment..
  2. First of all, those two things are nothing alike. A baseball team, as a whole, controls their W-L destiny much more than a pitcher does. Second, over a full 162 games, the 2005 Brewers outscored their opponents 726-697. And they played in a good division. So, in a way you're right - their talent level wasn't indicative of a .500 team. It was actually closer to a 84-78 team, according to their pythagorean record. The 2005 Brewers had an OPS+ of 104 and an OPS+ against of 106. The 2007 Brewers have an OPS+ of 106 and an OPS+ against of 100. I couldn't find the W3 for the 2005 team but I can almost gaurentee its lower than this year. Our pitching is better(even with the horrible defense) and our offense is better this year than in 2005.
  3. I agree completely with that brewmann. Defense and bullpen and well managing killed this team and that is where we need to fix things... that and maybe the C position. I stand by the opinion that an average manager has this team in the playoffs. Yost is below average by 3 to 4 games.
  4. The vote of confidence is many times a kiss of death, especially when Yost was as clueless as usual in the final few games.
  5. Last time i checked, teams final records aren't adjusted at the end of the season based on stat formulas of what some feel the record should have been.If you finish .500,you did actually win half your games. If this is how you are going to judge teams then you can continue to be clueless year after year. Teams do not always end up with the records they deserve and if you honestly think the 2005 team was a .500 quality team you are not a very good judge of talent. This is like judging how good a pitcher is by his win totals.
  6. We were not a .500 team in 2005, we ended up .500, there is a big difference. The team way overachieved that season and it has little to do with last year or this year.
  7. Oh sorry, you were actually serious my mistake, yes I'm sure Jenkins had a poor september just because we were in a playoff race that obviously is the more sensible expalantion.
  8. Wow its almost like splits are just random! Sorry I'm just a bit irked that we went to Counsell with the bases loaded tonight, you put your best players in not the ones with the best random splits.
  9. Well first off the 2005 team massively overachieved so I wouldn't use them as an example of how much we improved, just because that team won 10 games more than they should have doesn't mean a whole lot. We stretched our young starters out so they are ready to play full seasons next year. All of our young guys improved over last year and stayed healthy and showed their potential. We proved that Yost is not the manager for this team (hopefully) We set an attendence record which stabalizes the payroll. We played meaningful games until the 2nd to last game of the season and that will help somewhat next year. We hopefully cut the fat on the team a bit with some players we don't need like Jenkins finishing out their contracts.
  10. The bullpen worries me but the usage of said bullpen means its going to be a weakness even if we fix it.
  11. It will be extremely hard for me to get excited about the Brewers next year if Yost is the manager because I know in my heart that he will blow their chances at the playoffs yet again. Even if we somehow manage to make the playoffs in spite of Yost I have no confidence at all in him managing a team in a playoff game.
  12. sorry its Yost. I can complain about a lot of guys but Yost put most of them in the position to lose. Capuano hasn't pitched poorly, the defense has screwed him. Sheets got hurt, it happens. Hall hasn't been great but I never believed in the 35 HR's and had he played full time he'd be on pace for 20ish which is probably realistic. Turnbow should have been taken out of the setup role the minute we got Linebrink but nope Yost has to blow game after game with him. This entire season sits squarely on Yost's head.
  13. Brewers have to win out, if they lose even 1 game the odds of them making the playoffs are slim, 2 games and their odds are extremely small.
  14. We were just as bad in the 6th inning as the 7th.
  15. The majority of the team stayed healthy this year, most of the young guys showed great growth seasons. Our outlook for 2008 looks very good as long as we can put together a bullpen.
  16. Today, yes. He pitched fine. However, there is something wrong when your designated Number 2 pitcher pitches in 21 straight losses. Is that a small sample size? Is that crazy Vegas odds? What is going on with that? Capuano probabaly should have won at least 5 of those games in there, I can't blame one pitcher who was mostly killed by the defense, the overshift and an injury. Capuano also was not really a #2 pitcher, I was hopeful he'd grow into a #3 but he has mostly been a #4 in his career. Gallardo/Villaneuva are our best shots at a true #2/#3 type.
  17. I'm a true fan and I pretty much agree. I would gladly lose the rest of our games to see Yost fired, even if it meant we missed having a winning record on the season. I am beyond thinking he is only a minor problem, he is a well below average manager and its time for a change.
  18. Yeah I was a bit confused by Spurling pitching with a 1 run lead and the season likely on the line. Oh well there is always next year to get frustrated at as Yost pisses it down the tubes for us. Though hopefully the rotation is strong enough next year that we can squeek into the playoffs even with him as manager.
  19. Dillon played 3B in the minors, its his natural position.
  20. Hall and Dillon can both play 3B better than Braun as well.
  21. If we were 1.5 games back I'd have a pretty good feeling about things but unfortunately we are 2.5 games back. The Cubs have just done that little bit extra to win some close games and we have found ways to lose a few down the stretch (largely Yost's fault but I'll save that for another thread).
  22. Even if Counsell gets the bunt down it was not a suicide squeeze so there is a very good chance the runner either doesn't go or is cut down at home. Its just a bad move all around and having him bunt with 2 strikes was horrible. There is no way letting Counsell bunt there is better than pinch hitting. And again I'm not saying Yost cost us the game because he could have pinch hit and Mench could have GIDP etc. What I'm saying is he lowered our chances to win and he has done that too many times to count this season. Those things add up over the season.
  23. I disagree, its not that simple. If Yost puts in Mench to PH for Counsell instead of doing the dumb bunt thing we raise our chance of scoring a run at least 10% if not more. So 10% of the time the game would have been over regardless of what happened later in the game. Like I said Yost didn't cost us the game, but he certainly lowered our chances of winning and you do not want a manager who does that on a regular basis. I don't care whether your players perform or not when he's making poor choices it will hurt the team in the long run.
  24. Thats the thing though, I don't just blame Yost for the loss. The players did fail to excecute as well. Yost however is in a position where he cannot fail to execute on a regular basis and keep his job, in at least half of the games I feel he makes critical errors that lower our chances to win. Bunting with 2 strikes should almost never happen with a position player in the game, it is just a terrible move. He did it twice tonight and one of them was in a questionable situation to be bunting in the first place. The players ultimately control the majority of the game but Yost does control a small part of every game too and he is costing us 5% chances to win on a regular basis that add up to 2, 3 or 4 wins total on the year. With that many more wins we are still strong contenders in the playoff race instead of on the outside looking in.
  25. Well it was only the 2nd HR allowed by Cordero so while it stinks its hard for me to be bothered by that too much. The fact that we couldn't bring in a run from 3rd with 1 out to pad the lead that really bothers me. The fact that Yost decided to bunt which isn't a high percentage play in the first place bugs me, the fact he bunted with 2 strikes which is a horrible play really bugs me. He should have just pinch hit for Counsell but oh well. I do think 2008 will be better because Gallardo and Villaneuva give us #2/#3 upside starters instead of having a bunch of #4/#5 guys which is what we had most of this year outside of Sheets.
