  1. The Giants are an old team that is going to wear out as the season goes on and has had multiple players play way over their heads like Belt and Crawford. That team is not remotely scary, it is a sub .500 roster playing 500 baseball and an old injury prone pitcher coming back isn't going to somehow change it. The Giants are just not a scary matchup other than the fact the Brewers tend to play poorly on west coast trips. The only question is can they hold off the Rockies for 3rd place and can they somehow manage to beat a .500 record.
  2. There is no way it would have come close to 50 feet beyond that. It was heading almost straight down when it hit.
  3. I can believe it being 433, it was heading down at a pretty small angle, it wasn't traveling too much farther than where it hit the scoreboard. To use the image from above, if the scoreboard is the foul line of a bowling lane there was no way that ball was making it to the pins in the air.
  4. Are you saying chatwood has been an excellent investment or the defense? Chatwood has been bad. Mid 4s era. Hasn't made it past 5.1 innings since April and only has one start over 6 on the season. What about that is excellent Chatwood has 8.1 BB/9 and an xFIP of 5.26. He has actually been quite fortunate on the year. Lester has been pretty bad as well, worst peripherals of any full season in his career yet his best ERA ever. The Cub's defense and/or luck has played a huge role in their pitching this season.
  5. I think it is probably his injury at play. He is on pace for 21 HR, 19 SB, 98 R, .830 OPS over a full season not including the DL stint which made him miss over 10% of the season. He maybe didn't take the step up people thought he would be he is at least on pace for a normal year.
  6. I don't really care a lick about Sogard but I figured I would do some digging. Last year he had a wOBA of .345 with an xwOBA of .348. Solid season that was fully supported by his batted ball data. To me that says signing him to a major league deal was not a bad move, he looked pretty legit. This season his wOBA is a paltry .197 and his xwOBA is an equally paltry .236. There is a little bit of bad luck here but his season was mostly deserved. I have no clue why he has been so awful but the stats suggest it wasn't just bad luck. It looks like releasing him is the proper move. To me it looks like a player the team handled properly. Just one that didn't work out.
  7. That was at a time that the team was trying to rebuild its fan base as much as anything else. It also should have resulted in a strong draft pick, that pick ended up going to the Angels and turned into Mike Trout. Stearns claims he is looking more long term so I wouldn't expect a rental trade. DeGrom is a bit of a different beast since he would be the ace for the next few years.
  8. This isn't a new thing, that is a long standing rule and something you have to learn to do properly when you are young. Sure now it can be spotted with replay but those players always should have been called out so it isn't really the replay at fault. You should never slide in a way that takes you off the base, if you do that you just didn't slide properly.
  9. Shaw really struggles with any play where he has to move and pick up the ball off the ground. That sounds like a bad deficiency for 2B. Donaldson has more than just injury concerns. His second half last year looks great but it showed some really troubling signs as he started to strike out more, had trouble getting around on fastballs and started turning into a guess hitter. He looks a lot like Bautista did before the bottom dropped out. I wouldn't want anything to do with Donaldson long term so he would have to be dirt cheap.
  10. I think they are fine I could never watch one ever again and I'd be perfectly happy, but they don't bother me either. I usually turn down the commentary on normal games because it is so bad, so the fan interaction stuff doesn't bother me. I liked all the interviews they did with people. I will say that trying to cater to the older crowd is how baseball will fail, they have to try something to get newer fans. Football gets it naturally with the gambling, NBA is basically "the bachelor" of sports now with all the inane twitter nonsense that attracts people so much. Baseball needs to find a way to get a younger fanbase. As others have said Facebook probably isn't the answer. Maybe get a streaming service to take games makes more sense. My kids spend all of their time on hulu, netflix even youtube etc. None of them use facebook anymore.
  11. Did anyone notice that in yesterday's game Mauer played 1B and never had a play to him the entire game. I think there was a pickoff play when Orf was on 1st so he actually did touch the ball once. That is really crazy to see from a first basemen.
  12. To be fair by failing to bunt we increased our odds to win, that happens way more than people think it does. Bunting is a super low win probability move in most cases.
  13. Probably the same reason Counsell looks like he ate gas station sushi for dinner right now.
  14. Never seen Broxton put a good bunt on the ball so it is a tough situation since he K's so much.
  15. I get the strong vibe that we win the game here or lose the game here. Edit: Hope I'm wrong!
  16. Brewers have a .688 OPS in this situation on the year compared to a .727 OPS overall. The NL as a whole has a .835 OPS compared to a .717 overall. It would seem we are terrible in this situation.
  17. Can't be any worse than Weeks was most of his career.
  18. Usually these types of stats are just random noise. You need much bigger samples to assume they are real. It is why you don't use things like day/night splits when deciding what to do in fantasy baseball, every study done has shown they just aren't predictive most of the time.
  19. To add to this I find this stat completely amazing. "Mike Trout hasn’t gone more than two games without reaching base since being called up for good in April 2012" That's 6 seasons and never gone more than 2 games in a row not reaching base.
  20. Jimmy Nelson will move into the rotation at some point and that gives a natural reason to move Peralta out. Also I'm a firm believer that if the Brewers are in it next month they will trade for a SP.
  21. They said on the radio that the cubs have only been shut out in back to back games once in their history and the first time on back to back days. I think they got something wrong. They were shut out on back to back days last season against the Dodgers. May 26th+27th.
  22. Umps usually side on player safety when it comes to warmup pitches thrown or not thrown. Whether that is the correct way to do it is certainly up for debate.
  23. Braun has driven in 20.91% of possible runners this season, 7th of 209 batters who have come to the plate with at least 100 runners on base. Bryant is at 12.88%, 140th in the same sample. Bryant came up in 2015. In that time frame 110 batters have come to the plate with at least 1,000 runners on base. Bryant has driven in 14.31% of runners, 82nd in the sample. Despite being a much worse hitter, Braun is at 17.42%, 8th in the same sample. It isn't all random. Over large samples different players display different skill at driving runners in. So far Bryant's ability to convert base runners to runs scored hasn't lived up to his context neutral marks. Again, I'm not trying to say Braun is better than Bryant. Just that making determinations based solely on context neutral data leaves out quite a bit of information in a context dependent game. If you aren't buying on the Mariners does that mean you similarly aren't buying on the Brewers as a good team because of their insane record in one run games? Large samples are not what you are discussing here, you are discussing insanely small samples. I think teams somewhat control their win loss rates in 1 run games based mostly on how good their bullpen is. But going 21-9 involves some luck too. WPA is a stat that needs like 2 or 3 seasons of data to be meaningful, not 1/3 of a season.
