  1. I'm starting him. If he destroys the Brewers and I sat him I would be pissy all weekend. This way it is a win either way.
  2. There is no way you can give him a hit for that play. Yeah it was tricky with the wind but you should make that 90% of the time.
  3. If we score here I assume Peralta just finishes the game? oops, didn't notice he was PH for. Guess that can't happen!
  4. In fantasy circles I've been telling people Brinson isn't coming up until late in the year, someone heavily struggles or gets hurt or Braun is traded. There just isn't any room for him. If Broxton and Santana both hit all year long it just means someone is traded in the off season.
  5. Yes there is a chance. High velocity fastball plus slider is something that works in a bullpen but isn't enough in the rotation.
  6. Broxton has over a .900 OPS in his past 30 days of games too. OF is looking really good lately.
  7. Yeah I hope so. He has pitched 4 of the last 5 days and that last one was very high stress.
  8. Contreras had to reach for it making it look like a ball. I don't blame the ump on that one.
  9. Well the eye test is the worst way to judge anything since you don't watch every game by every team. Also a play that Dyson makes look easy requires the best dive of his life for Adam Jones to catch. The eye test is horrible at tracking route efficiency, speed etc. Kevin Kiermaier is probably the best CF in the game unless Buxton has surpassed him and he made 3 errors in one series this year. It happens. As for Broxton, that is the first ball all year he hasn't caught that had a 10% or lower catch expectancy. He has caught 6 of 7 in the 10-24% range. 2 of 3 in the 25-49% range. 3 of 5 in the 50 to 74% and 2 of 13 in the 0 to 25. So what you are likely seeing is that he has had a lot of tries at really really hard catches and just barely missed a number of them. Ryan Braun is 0 of 15 on such catches. Adam Jones is 0 of 12. Andrew McCutchen 0 of 11. Pillar 0 of 10, Mookie Betts 0 of 9. Those catches are just really hard to make.
  10. The statcast catch probability metrics have him in the top 10.
  11. Broxton could just as easily be 2 for 2 today. Both tough catches against him on hard hit balls.
  12. So Villar has a .337 wOBA at home this year and a .191 on the road. He hit well at TOR and poorly in the rest of the road games. I wonder if he just really hates playing in the cold.
  13. Butler had an xFIP over 5 and a K/9 under 5 in the minors. He has been terrible at every stop in AAA and the majors. I can't imagine him getting more than 4 or 5 starts before they demote him.
  14. Not saying we can't find better defense but Villar has been pretty good since the first month of the season. He had a rocky start and has settled into playing some good baseball at second. April: 119 chances, 64 assists, 5 errors May: 74 chances, 40 assists, 0 errors Not posting this, expect an idiotic play today from him but I am one that is in his corner that believes he's too gifted not to becomes a very good MLB player. Most advanced metrics still have him below average. Errors are such a bad stat I don't like to use those. The ruling on what is and what isn't an error is just ridiculous at times. It wasn't so much just about Villar either, it is about the team as a whole. I want to see us have an above average defense on the field at some point and that means maybe not signing a couple of the weaker fielders we have right now. Santana and Villar are probably the most replaceable weak defense guys for the future.
  15. Yeah I hope we don't sign Villar long term. We need to get better defense on the field. I really hope we win this game. Even if we just win 1 of 3 I'm ok with this weekend, 2 or 3 wins and I'm very happy. A sweep would just be awful.
  16. Broxton was struggling heavily and in the minors and Santana was hurt when Nieuwenhuis got most of his playing time though.
  17. If Peralta looks good in the pen they will just eat that money next year almost for sure. The payroll is basically nothing so they can afford to do that. If he is mediocre in the pen than cut bait and that is fine.
  18. Gallardo's career was completely changed when he tore his ACL in 2008. He was never the same guy, never found that release point again.
  19. It also wouldn't surprise me if Zach Davies is in AAA this time next week if he has a bad 2 starts.
  20. Given the amazing start Espino is off to maybe they really just wanted to see him pitch a game or two in the majors. I don't know the guys game at all but just looking at the minor league stats he's always had good control but this year he is getting a lot more Ks which turns him from a meh guy to a guy who could actually be something.
  21. Peralta was handled properly. His best years were early. Fastball+slider is just a RP toolkit. He had to gain faith in his curve or change to ever make it work as a starter.
  22. Interesting how much a year changes things. I give Counsell a lot of credit for bringing guys along so far. Broxton and Santana sure have looked even better this season so far. He's played his cards right for the most part. Another good example has been the catching situation. He's done well in my book. To be fair then are you going to blame him for Villar's OBP being 90 points lower than last year? Why would you blame the manager for what is mostly just a shift in Babip?
  23. Villar has a career .329 OBP, he is a passable leadoff hitter. CCs job is to maximize player value for trade and for next season. If he feels Broxton will learn better batting 7th it is pretty hard to argue with it. I mean I want him hitting 2nd for selfish reasons involving fantasy baseball but I have no issue at all with them easing into the game in the bottom of the order. He has been such an up and down player the more they can handle him with baby gloves the better. For Broxton this year is figuring out if he is part of the future or not.
  24. Jack Z was really bad at drafting pitching so that explains some of it. Some of it has to be an inability to develop though since we haven't even developed many bullpen arms. Even if we failed on starters more of them should have been viable in the bullpen.
