  1. No, that is just somewhat flawed usage of stats. Weeks OPS was over .700 as late as April 28th last year so hard to call that a bad stretch. He has a .700 OPS in the past 2 weeks now. He broke out of his funk mid June last year. From June 15th until July 24th (the date you picked) he put up an OPS of .723 which again isn't bad. Weeks had a very poor 30 games or so last year, he had a very poor 20 games this year. This very well might be the type of guy he is now. .700 to .750 OPS in his normal stretches, a month or so of awfulness and then an .800+ OPS in his good stretches. That is still going to average out to something usable offensively. Probably something like what he gave us last year. I dislike Weeks as a baseball player, I pray we don't vest his option and I would love to trade him. But at least be realistic about what he is. A Gennett/Weeks platoon would probably work for the team but it would destroy his trade value and he is a player that I also would be looking to trade. You can look back in the archives and we've had this discussion already like 10 years ago and it was with Jenkins. As players start to decline their cold streaks get nastier and their hot streaks get shorter but they don't just fall off a cliff. Weeks probably has 3 more years of decline in him and then he will be a part time player or out of baseball at a young age because his defense limits his value in any short term play. 1 of those 3 years will probably seem like a resurgence as he'll get extra hot but the graph of his value will be a steady arrow down, it won't fall off a cliff without injury most likely though.
  2. We actually had completely average starting pitching last year and our peripherals were better than average, the park likely hurt us there. This year we have played 7 games against bottom offenses and 17 games against top offenses, it is more of a competition issue than a pitching issue though the pitching is still pretty average. We have 3 more games against good offenses this month and then only 6 games against good offenses all of June. I imagine by the end of June our pitching will miraculously recovered and look pretty average again.
  3. He may only be .728 OPS Weeks like last year but it is highly unlikely that he is now a sub .600 OPS player and any sort of reasonable projection for him has him over the .675 line that people think is Gennett's upside. A guy struggles for 20 games and you decide it is more likely he is just done than that he will regress towards his norm? I mean seriously if you really believe this you need to look at player splits more, players have cruddy 20-30 game stretches all the time and it is very rare that they are the new level for a player. At age 30+ players do decline but it isn't common that they fall off a cliff.
  4. Yeah if Segura is even a league average SS for his career we won the trade. If he has a few all star years we destroyed them in the trade.
  5. Sure if you expect Weeks to continue to hit that line which would just be silly considering the track record. In the past 12 games Weeks is still struggling but he is at a .216/.370/.324 line which is better than that line you expect from Gennett. Weeks had a 20 game cold streak where he hit .099/.210/.155. Those numbers are obviously putrid but those games are also over and really don't mean much compared to his career history. Benching Weeks outright at this point should get the manager fired. Benching him for a couple games is fine though.
  6. To nitpick further Weeks was #2 in a really bad draft class. You have to go to pick 13 to find a 'star' and that is Aaron Hill who still hasn't been a consistent star. Nobody in the 1st round of that draft has been a consistent star level player since.
  7. This discussion has really deteriorated into meaningless at this point. No I don't for one second believe if Weeks were white he would performing any differently than he does now. Trying to make something out of nothing. The guy is streaky, he has been in his entire career.
  8. A significant part of Capuano's downfall was chasing 20 wins, one of the dumber things we've done to a pitcher in recent memory. Lets take a guy coming off of arm surgery pitch extra late in the season when his arm is tired and we aren't trying to compete just to chase some silly personal milestone.
  9. I don't think for most it is about the talent level or at least not the way he described it. A 90 win team with no personality can be boring to watch. A 75 win team with a ton of personality can be exciting to watch. I disagree that it is a sub .500 team too, it certainly has as much talent as we had going into last year so if you found the team boring last year as well then maybe the talent is the issue. I think what he is missing is silly stuff like the untuckem or the HR celebrations or the closer with fiery antics etc. This team just goes about its business in a very professional manner because most of the big personalities have left the team at this point.
  10. Over time as in say over 10+ years sure, but over a single season there is no way they will. I'm for replay for some things, especially really easy things like HR or not HR. If they go to the booth for the replay there is no reason they should ever take over 1 minute of time.
  11. Bpro listed us at #7 in 2007. #13 in 2008. #15 in 2009. In 2008 our top prospects to start the year on the power 50 were Parra, LaPorta, Escobar, Gamel, Jeffress, Salome, Gillespie, Pena, Brewer and Lucroy. The only other players in the top 30 that made any impact are Cain and Narveson (#30). Our minor league system right now is better than that is and we were #13 back then. In 2009 we had traded away LaPorta and Parra was no longer a prospect but added Peralta, Lawrie, Odorizzi and our rankings went down even though the talent level in the system went up. This is an extremely inexact science when it comes to ranking players is all I'm going to say. I put very little stock into these rankings.
  12. Lawrie developing into a good defensive player really makes this one look bad. I think part of this was a character trade though.
  13. I can only assume you understand how absolutely pathetic this makes you look to attack a minor spelling error and ignore the rest of my statement? Weeks has never displayed any type of personality, this is not new.
  14. You mean Cain who has yet to put a league average season, Escobar who has 1 league average year at age 27, Lawrie who has been pretty much awful offensively, Brantley who is almost replacement level except for the fact he plays CF at only a slightly below average level. Our farm system that was so highly rated has completely failed compared to expectations. I expect our current crop to pass what the post Braun crop did.
  15. No team in baseball is this successful at drafting, not a single one. Anyway just a few years ago we had an excess of talent in our system and they turned into jack and his friend that I won't name on a family friendly board. Minor league system ratings don't really mean very much. Our 3 best players from recent drafts were a complete stud (Braun), a guy a lot of people passed on early because he was so flawed (Fielder) and a pitcher we got in the 2nd round. Bryan Bullington, Chris Gruler, Adam Loewen and Clint Everts were drafted over Fielder. In 2003 and 2004 they were probably all highly rated by most prospect sites and not one of them made an impact in the majors.
  16. You can't make a statement like that as fact. A lot of people on this site have opinions different than yours, you need to realize that every once in a while. Actually I can make it like it is fact because it is. They might take on a miniscule portion of their personality just like any two people who spend time together but to say that one manager is going to suppress all other personalities is not going to happen. To try to blame these players personalities on Roenicke is nothing short of absurd. These guys are acting exactly the way they always have, we just lost some of the bigger personalities in the clubhouse. Gomez is still looking like he is hopped up on something, Weeks has always been the quite guy, Braun is acting exactly like normal only without Fielders antics, Aramis has always been a quite guy, Lucroy has always come off as nothing but a complete profession etc. Nothing has changed.
  17. The idea that a team becomes like its manager is absurd. We had plenty of 'antics' under Macha and he was about as exciting as a brick, pretty sure I saw him sleeping through most of the games. Fielder, Sabathia, Greinke and Morgan were all heavy personalities on the team and they left. Nothing wrong with that or anything but for the OP apparently that isn't as fun to watch.
  18. Well sure you would still need guidelines on what is and isn't replayable. Getting hit probably would not be. They would still have to work on all the gray areas The point is the way they are going about it now is completely flawed, where the umps walk off, interrupt play etc to make the call. HR or not HR should be a 30 second stoppage of play instead of the 2+ minutes it is now.
  19. I would gladly trade Yuni B for $1M and a roster spot at this point if I were the Brewers. I'm not buying this at all.
  20. I agree in general with the idea that this should be easy but on the same note I am an NFL fan and I think fully 40% of reviews in the NFL get the wrong result, it is just awful how bad they are at reviewing plays.
  21. Someone in the box instantly watches a replay of anything remotely close and calls for a replay if he is unsure. He watches the replay a couple times and makes the call. No reason this process should ever take more than 2 minutes, if it is so close you can't tell in 2 minutes than you just don't overrule it. Certainly no reason to have the umps on the field ever walk off the field as part of the process.
  22. Matt Kemp wasn't particularly well thought of before he became such a great player. Back in 2009 you probably would have gotten a much different reaction to that post. He sort of shed that image over the past 3 years though.
  23. There are plenty of guys as good as Hart in our system. There isn't likely a Braun or a Fielder but there are guys who will be Hart, Weeks type players and probably someone will be a Gallardo as well. If you honestly think Corey Hart is better than everyone in our system you are exactly my point of people really underrating our system. Cost controlled average major league players are very valuable and are the building blocks for a successful franchise. You do need to surround them with a few stars but it isn't a BAD thing to have a bunch of average major league players in your system.
  24. There is a lot of massively overrating other teams prospects in this post, that is all I'll say on the matter. To put it in perspective people used to love our farm system too, one that produced the stud major league players like Inman and Gamel and Parra and Jeffress and LaPorta and Salome and Gillespie and Ford and Green and Iribarren and Gindle and even Cain and Brantley who ended up being nothing special so far and Lawrie who has only been good because he somehow became great defensively. When you look at all of these awesome guys we had a few years back when we were rated as one of the better farm systems like 3 of them became average major league players or better. Our system is highly underrated right now, it has way more depth than it had back when we got high rankings, it is just low on perennial all stars. Obviously teams want perennial all stars but it isn't like we don't have any major league players coming up.
  25. To be fair here most of the Cardinals pitching thing is new. Most of their teams in recent memory have been built off of pitchers picked up via FA or trade not drafted and developed themselves. The A's pitching thing is largely the park and division. The Rays seem to be the one team that really really stands out at drafting and developing pitching. But even in their case you can point to the park and valuing defense over offense.
