  1. I'd send Peralta down but I think sending Fiers down is fine too or even using him in the bullpen as long as they use him every 4 to 5 days and put him in for 2-3 innings per appearance.
  2. Curious how we mishandled him other than him probably not being major league ready right now but close enough?
  3. It depends on the players we drafted the past 2 seasons. We have the minor league players to sustain this team for the next 2-3 years pretty easily. If that next wave can replace some of the missing pieces at that point we should be fine, if not we might have to consider a rebuild. The minor league system is way better than people give it credit for, it is just light on stars. So as long as we have stars to build around we are fine, if we need to replace stars it gets harder.
  4. Kotsay played in 10 games in CF in 2011 and only 2 of them did he play the full game in CF and they were spread far apart. Most of the time he spent in CF was when Morgan was out with a broken finger. Almost all of his starts on the year were when Hart was injured at the beginning and when Braun got hurt in the middle of the season. Again this is really stretching your definition of favoring vets when you have 1 example and it was as a 4th OF who mostly played while guys were hurt. Anyway I give up, you are going to believe what you want to. That is exactly the point though, he does have other choices. He went ahead and went to the less experienced choice who was showing they could handle it in every single one of those cases last year. He isn't going to play Betancourt just because of his name, I think he has proven that.
  5. And that was Yost. RR isn't really a big hot hand manager either, he is pretty normal in this regard. Seems like people are taking every flaw of our last 3 managers and throwing them all on RR. RR is a pretty vanilla manager like he is pulling the book out and just doing what it says to. Yost was more of the wild PH with the LHB who is hot even though he is facing a LOOGY or play the crappy MI just because he is hot type or actually take some risks with the batting order. Macha was the I hate rookies guy. RR is in the middle on both of those with way too many bunts thrown in.
  6. That is fine Gobias I'm just saying that RR is not the type of manager who does this more than most though. He has shown a tenancy to play the best player and not just the most known. The fact that you pointed him out as being flawed in this is what bothered me. I really don't expect Yuni to play a lot though unless Segura really struggles which might happen since he is completely unknown at this point.
  7. Mark Kotsay was a 4th OF who played over Gomez whose defense gets heavily downgraded in value playing RF and Kotsay was a better hitter at that point than Gomez was. That is really trying to stretch things using this as your argument. This is a complete non issue.
  8. Nobody is fearful of this though. They are fearful of counting on 4 rotational spots being filled by unproven players. When you have a rotation that only has 1 pitcher who has ever pitched a full season you are playing with fire. Young pitchers tend to get knocked out of games earlier more often and you run into long term innings issues since they aren't used to a 33 start season yet. I don't think anyone minds having Fiers, Estrada, Peralta or for some Rogers in the rotation, it is having all 4 penciled in that is a problem. This move adds some much needed depth and means one of those guys can struggle and be sent down and we aren't out of luck.
  9. There weren't any more deserve players though. Did we really want to see more Counsell or Josh Wilson? We just had nobody else to play SS in 2011. Hairston can't field the position. There was no depth there at AAA. Who is this more deserving person? I disliked Betancourt as much as the next guy but there just weren't options in 2011 unless we brought in a different player from another team.
  10. I could buy this when we had Macha. Roenicke doesn't seem like this at all though so not really sure where you are coming from. We didn't play the proven Morgan last year, we gave Aoki his shot. They were set to just give Gamel 1B until he got hurt. When Segura came to the team he played every day as the SS. They were willing to go to Jim Henderson as the closer last year. When Lucroy went down they leaned more on Maldonado. The only time he has favored a vet over a young guy was McGehee over Green in 2011 but I think that is more a product of him just not liking Green than anything and probably a product of McGehee having his hot streak right in the middle of the season and buying himself more time. Yuni started full time in 2011 because we didn't have another SS to play basically, it was a dead position.
  11. I don't worry about it even a tiny bit, there is no way they can suspend him without him failing a test. This is such a complete non issue. The players union is too strong for you to spend even a second worrying about this. At worst MLB could put them in a legal battle for 5 or so years. If he does fail a test it would be 50 games too not 100.
  12. If we are in contention while playing games in September 2 of the 3 seasons the money was worth it. The draft pick being worth it probably requires making the playoffs once. Winning in the post season is about getting hot at the right time and having things bounce your way so just being around the playoffs is really enough of a goal because no matter how great your roster you can easily lose a short series in October.
  13. Gamel came up and rotted on the bench when he should have been working on his defense in AAA. Green just isn't a major league quality player and I think they identified that properly. It is a mix of both. We have all of the older prospects that weren't good enough to be parts of our big trades and then we have a bunch of younger guys who are in the low levels still. Neither type are the types that grade well in prospect lists. Sickels still gave us 11 guys at B- or higher which are the types he usually expects to have major league careers as a starter and he had 11 more C+ types who are types that could develop into something. It is a deep but mediocre system. Some of that is from flawed older guys, some from raw unproven guys. We don't have any A prospects but while those are the highest upside they still do flame out a lot.
  14. Lucroy had 91 PA in AAA as a recent example. He was brought up despite having a lot of issues with his defense still and he wasn't exactly killing it at AAA. Aggressive doesn't always mean young either. If they show that they may be ready we tend to bring them up while a team like the Cardinals will keep them down while they work on their last problems. The Twins, Rays, Cardinals are all known for giving their young guys extra time in the minors to work on the little things even if they are ready in some areas. It is part of their win now mentality. If Melvin thinks a prospect can help them win now he will trade them or bring them up and not worry about the later which is the same general concept that others are complaining about, just this is the area I don't like how he does it the most.
  15. I don't mind Betancourt the bench guy actually, I just hated the idea of him starting. He can hit lefties and there are situations where he makes a decent PH option.
  16. I expect 2 years out of him and anything he gives in year is a bonus.
  17. That could be right Thurston but I'll be honest, if I had joined this forum for the first time last year I probably would have quit coming to the forum because of how overbearingly negative a large number of posters are about everything. People have every right to post whatever they want but I'd like to see them step back and realize how all that negatively looks to anyone new to the site. I joined the site when the team was always awful and it was never like this back then even when there was a reason to hate how the team was being run and how futile things looked going into every season.
  18. I'd think anything below a qualifying offer is cheap these days. I also like him a bit more now that I dug deeper and discovered that the sinker usage matches perfectly with when he started to get better results. I don't think we should expect him to pitch to his xFIP necessarily because the track record of this new version isn't long enough and because looking at the short list of guys who rely heavily on their sinker shows that almost all of them beat their xFIP on a regular basis. My revised opinion is that he is probably something like a 3.80 ERA pitcher and with our situation he'll pitch closer to a 4.00 ERA guy.
  19. You could see what type of pitcher Suppan and Looper were when they left, just look at their component ERAs. Lohse is a 4ish ERA pitcher and that is what we are paying him as. The risk is his age, not really his production. If we signed him expect a 3.30 ERA I'd really be upset but at $11M a year that just isn't the expectation. The Cardinals haven't really fixed many pitchers btw, that is just a mirage people make up in their heads.
  20. We have a young farm system, not a bad one. Young farm systems don't grade well in general. Melvin is very aggressive with his prospects, he's aggressive in trading them for major league talent and he's aggressive at promoting them. Obviously you don't like that but it is how he is. We have graduated way more young talent over the past 10 years than say the Cardinals have and it isn't really even close so it isn't like we aren't getting cheap production.
  21. I bet when we sign Valverde later this week people are gonna really flip out~.
  22. This forum in general has become excessively negative about the team over the past 4 or 5 years which doesn't seem to make sense considering it is probably the 2nd best stretch the team has ever had. I expect us to compete for a playoff spot this year and I expect Lohse to be a large part of the reason we do because we desperately needed more depth in the rotation. I worry that the bullpen is going to ruin another season though so hopefully they do better than I expect.
  23. The first team to have an injured SP or the Rangers. He was never going to wait until June 1st. They brought his price down and someone would have bitten if we didn't. Dillard was never going to be a major league starter and Villanueva was a disaster as a starter because he just gave up too many HR. He now owns a career 4.80 ERA as a starter and isn't likely to stick in the role because he can't get people out once they see him more than once. They were most certainly not better options than cruddy old veterans, they were just cheap.
  24. Last year Liriano had 23 K and 3 BB in 18 IP on March 27th. He went on to walk everyone in the majors. Watch Peralta pitch, he really doesn't have a solid clue where the ball is going when he throws. His stuff has enough movement that as long as hitters are swinging he is going to get a lot of K and not an over the top number of walks but eventually this will catch up to a player and hitters will start to lay off of his pitches more. To use an extreme example Marmol never threw strikes when he came up but was very successful because people swung at all his junk out of the zone, once they caught on he suddenly walked like 7 per 9. Peralta starts in AAA for a month, it gives us another year of control on him and lets him find his comfort zone and then fills in for the first guy who struggles or is injured would be my guess. A lot depends on when Lohse is ready to pitch obviously though.
  25. This is simply absurd.
