  1. We had 2 1B go down with injuries. One will be coming back after ~45 games. Why should Melvin go out and get someone to cover those few at bats? Who would want to come to play for only that short of time? Someone with no current job perhaps? 45 games? Has that been said someplace? I think there is a good chance we don't see Hart in the line-up before June. I think there is a good chance we see him by May. He has been through this same rehab before, I tend to trust someone who has done it before.
  2. I won't disagree with your rant but it really is misplaced. The entire game was built around gambling and players and teams throwing games to make people money. At no point has MLB been about honest players. While I'm not all on board with steroid use it isn't some big black eye on the sport because the sport has always been about cheating to get ahead. It isn't unique in this, NFL steroid use is out of control as an example. NBA refs are payed off on a regular basis and the players themselves don't' really care about what happens on a game to game basis. An overwhelming number of soccer games have been shown to be rigged etc.
  3. Go bold or go home!
  4. This dude tweeted the suspension for Melky a month before it happened and everyone ignored him like they should have. Obviously doesn't mean he is correct here but he did do it, you can look back in his tweet history and find it.
  5. http://daps.tv/source-robinson-cano-alex-rodriguez-ryan-braun-and-curtis-granderson-to-be-suspended/ I normally wouldn't put anything into something like this at all but this is the same guy that broke the news Melky failed a test a month before he was suspended so there are at least some legs to it.
  6. http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/194697521.html HIP HIP...HOORAY! I shudder at the thought of what our offense would have looked like without Corey and Aramis. Slightly better than the Cubs or Pirates~.
  7. Because 84-78 is 3 games over .500 not 6 games like some people like to say~. They have 6 more wins than losses but that is only 3 games over .500.
  8. The Cardinals don't want him back because they have 5 of the best minor league pitchers in baseball and they are all ready to hit in the next few years.
  9. 4 of 8 years at .500 or better and one of the other 4 at 80 wins. 5 of 6 years placing 3rd or higher. This is not a storied franchise, that is one of the best runs they have ever had. 78-83 was probably the best 8 year run though it had one totally lousy year in there. 87-92 is in the running as well but that had two 4th place finishes and a 7th and no playoff appearances. Obviously deeper divisions but only by 1 team. For all the guff the team gets they are 17 games over .500 in the past 8 years for an average record of about 84-76 and the 2nd most wins in the division over that stretch (yes more than the Reds). That is not a bad run at all.
  10. Gallardo tweaked his groin in his outing, probably bad conditioning.
  11. You know what raising the payroll this year would get us, a named bullpen guy signed to a 3 year deal or a marginal FA pitcher signed to a 3 year deal. The team just didn't have any other holes to fill. The reason the payroll went down is because we have young cost controlled talent everywhere and we chose to go with the younger pitching. That definitely is plausible. When we are at 6 years of being a good team that other stretch was an easy pick. Now that we have extended it a couple more years it is getting harder to compare.
  12. There are tons of players who don't have good off-season conditioning that don't get injured every year and there are people who are over the top at conditioning that do get hurt on a regular basis. Without any real info behind the opinion it is trying to make something out of nothing.
  13. Franchise has gone through the best 8 year span in its history and people are still saying the people running it are awful, they will always be the whipping boys for some unless we win a World Series.
  14. Hart and Gomez are really the only candidates we have for trading and since Hart is starting the year hurt he likely won't have much value. The Pirates have been about to pass us in the standings for like 5 years now apparently, never happens. They are still a few years away as they have too much junk on the roster and they need that next wave of pitching to show up to have much hope.
  15. Gallardo is an ace against 28 teams and he is a minor league pitcher against the Cardinals. No clue why that is myself but it has been going on long enough that I don't see it stopping.
  16. Yuni B is despised because he is one of the 5 worst starting players in the past 5 years of baseball, he was just awful. Speed guys usually get plenty of flack, just not elite defensive players who usually bring back at least neutral value even if they have awful plate approaches like Gomez. It takes a guy like Yuni who is absolutely beyond belief horrible offensively and defensively to really bug people. Now the fact he played SS really saved him but had he been say a RF he could have been the worst regular player in the history of the game.
  17. No he is not a terrible pitcher but yeah he is not a great fit for our team/park. He has a career 4.45 ERA and a career 4.45 xFIP so it seems reasonable to assume xFIP tells the real story since it converges faster than ERA does. His xFIP the past 2 years were 4.04 and 3.96. He has improved with age mostly because of his control and ability to keep the ball down and limit the HR but he is likely a true talent of around a 4 ERA. When you add our park and questionable defense he is probably something like a 4.25 ERA guy if we were to sign him. Giving up a good draft pick for a 4.25 ERA guy is a pretty hard sell unless the contract is pretty cheap.
  18. Narveson really does make a lot of sense now that he was mentioned. A guy people don't want starting in the first place replacing a younger guy who might be kept down to keep him cheap and then maybe forced into duty because of other injuries.
  19. Some pretty smooth logic here.
  20. Mark Rogers if he gets more than a few starts. I have no faith in him being anything. I don't get how RR bugs you so much turborickey. I mean he is far from an amazing manager but he is so vanilla I can't see anything to hate. I got it with Yost, I got it with Macha, Roenicke I don't get it.
  21. he certainly is not.
  22. I would rather sit in a room doing nothing but staring at the wall than watch golf, Nascar or any type of basketball that isn't college. I'd probably rather watch soccer than any of those and soccer is just awful. Obviously everyone likes something different but outside of the NCAA tourney March is just bleak. But yeah the WBC isn't really for us, I can agree with that.
  23. Yeah the NCAA is semi interesting but there is nothing else going on that month. I find myself watching spring training games of teams I don't care about where it is all players I've never heard of by the 5th inning. It isn't as awful as say Feb sports but it is still part of the low point in sports. April through January are the great months for sports. Feb is by far the worst but March is next in line for me.
  24. I thought we all collectively took the "Never Again" vow after Suppan left town. Lohse would be a direct violation of that oath. Yep if Wainwright doesn't sign an extension next year and offers to come to the Brewers for $1M a year I'd tell him to take a walk because we signed a couple STL pitchers and they didn't live up to the contract. Lohse is a much better pitcher than Suppan or Looper. I don't love the idea of signing him but lets not be silly about this. For the most part those pitchers did exactly what people with a statistical background thought they would do moving from a pitchers park with an elite defense to a hitters park with a bad defense, this isn't rocket science here. We know what Lohse is likely to do with the Brewers and that is being a roughly league average pitcher by ERA or slightly worse than league average. As long as they approach a deal from that angle it is fine. What that means is with the draft pick they have to sign him for an undervalued contract to make it worth it.
  25. Winning more now results in more money sooner which covers the opportunity cost, it also spreads the risk over a lot longer period.. The value of the actual dollars just goes down with time as well. If you could sign a player for 30 years at $1M a year it would blow away a deal that was say 3 years for $15M in value to the team, even though the 2nd deal pays the player half as much.
