  1. So the Reds rotation has had a few scares this week. Latos took a ball off of his leg, Arroyo took one off of his hand. Initial reports are that neither looks too serious. I bring this up because they were one of the rare teams that got full seasons out of all 5 starters last year which is very rare. I think people are probably hyping that team up a little bit too much because that isn't likely to happen and they don't have much depth at SP in the high minors. The Cardinals have had some issues as well. Garcia is not throwing the ball well with his shoulder. Freese is having back problems. Beltran is banged up, Motte has a bad elbow and is starting on the DL. I mean the Cardinals opening day IF might include Kozma, Carpenter and Descalso. Which is a combination of mediocre to bad defense and bad hitting. Carpenter at least has some value at 2B but as a 3B he is nothing great. There isn't a big backup plan for the MI either. Wong isn't ready yet and if one of these goes down there isn't much depth to back it up. The NL Central is a weak division and the Reds and Cardinals do not have the type of teams that are a lock for 90+ wins.
  2. Oliver Perez struck out a lot of guys too. You cannot succeed as a starter with that poor of command so Rogers needs to change to become a good pitcher. I don't know if he can change or not but this version of Rogers has very little value.
  3. God no. rogers is a bad pitcher, pure and simple. Don't make excuses for him. He is almost as bad as Mark Hendrickson who there was never any reason to think could be better than a 5 ERA guy even though some on this forum bought into him for some reason.
  4. The DH isn't even about prolonging careers that much these days. Ortiz, Hafner, Berkman I guess are the only 3 old dudes I can think of that are just DH's now. More than anything it is used to let guys coming off of injuries play when it might not be a good idea to play them in the field, that and to rest older players on off days.
  5. Replacement level at RP is about 4.20 ERA. These guys are really close to replacement level. They are about as weak as you can get in a RP and still expect them to hold a full time job year after year.
  6. DH is such an over the top completely needed change that it really bothers me that traditionalists still win out when it is so obviously good for the game. With the new scheduling it just more obvious that it should be in both leagues. Yeah it hurts the strategy a little but it improves everything else about the game. Though if the Brewers had a DH I wouldn't have an easy reason to go to concessions every few innings since watching a pitcher hit is almost as boring as watching golf. Now that starters only go 6 innings the whole strategy thing isn't even a big deal anymore, by the 7th inning all the strategy is out the window in most games. Something really needs to be done about all the tiny delays with pitchers and hitters calling time out etc as well. Anything to speed up the game. I'd kill for automated strike/ball calls but obviously the technology has to be in place first.
  7. I'm not even sure Rogers would get taken if we put him on waivers, he is completely worthless as a trade chip. He hasn't shown anything in his entire professional baseball career. Even back in 2006 in rookie ball he walked too many to be a viable starter. The only time he has ever had any trade value was right after we drafted him. He is a sunk cost they are praying to get something out of at this point. Blanks is definitely someone I'd like to have on the team. I have no clue what the Padres want for him and I think you are fooling yourself if they think they view the team as not competing this season. That team has a lot of young talent, has a decent upside player at every single offensive position, they have a really solid bullpen. They just need some luck with the pitching to feel they can compete. It will take Cashner and Luebke returning from injury and pitching to their talent level but that team could easily be in the wild card race if everything goes well. It most likely won't be but it isn't a team like the Astros who should be giving up already.
  8. And your silly Garland fetish rears its ugly head again. This guy is beyond awful at this point. Once every 6 years or so he gets a lucky BABIP and posts above average ERA but almost his entire career has just been a study in futility. He is a poor man's Suppan and at this point in his career we really don't want a poor man's 34 year old Suppan. Not sure why our rotation is suddenly in trouble either. Nothing has changed about the rotation based on some exhibition games in spring.
  9. But again the Rays deals are nothing at like what the Brewers have. The Rays have traded away pitching which is a huge point of depth for them and a need for almost every team. They wait until that pitching is getting expensive to trade it away. The other big trade they made was Crawford who they did not need as they had Upton and Jennings was coming up. The Brewers have not had the type of depth that the Rays or A's have had and the places they have had depth are not places with a lot of need out there. Early this offseason there was need for CF but once the twins traded both of theirs it suddenly was a position that no team actually needed anymore. Same with 1B, it is just a really deep position right now in the majors. I have nothing at all against trading established players but no team in baseball does this without some sort of depth behind it unless it is a pure salary dump like the Marlins last year, that just isn't how baseball works. Even a trade like Boston did last year to dump all that salary was with depth in mind. Bradley made Crawford more expendable, Mauro Gomez is going to be ready by next year for 1B and Beckett was expendable.
  10. 23 pitchers pitched enough innings to qualify for the ERA title last year that had an average FB of under 90. Including names like Waiwright, Kennedy, Hudson, Haren, Weaver, Milone, Capuano and of course Dickey. You do not have to throw over 90 to be successful, especially when you have a really nasty secondary pitch which Fiers does have. There are reasons to doubt he will last long term as a high end starter but when he has that long of a track record of success in the minors there is no reason to think he will fail in the majors. Gorzelanny was a 0.2 WAR pitcher last year and Bradenhop was a 0.5 and while I hate pitching WAR those numbers look more real to me than the ERAs which looked very flukish. So yeah I exaggerated but there isn't much reason to think this bullpen is going to be great unless some young guys break out.
  11. What makes you compare a bullpen that's going to consist of exactly two returning players to last season's version? Not saying I think the bullpen will be great, just that your method of comparison is bad. The fact that all of the guys we added are below replacement level would be my issue. There is no reason to think we have a league average bullpen and to be honest we probably have one of the worst in the game.
  12. This would make a lot more sense if Hart were out for the year. It makes no sense at all for judging what we do for April.
  13. A co-worker and I had a discussion about this the other day. My argument is that what's more important from a fan standpoint..championships or team continuity? In my personal opinion it would be really hard to have warm, fuzzy feelings about a WS title if it was comprised mainly of a team of players that were on the team for a year or two and then gone. To me this question goes in a different direction. To me a world series win like the one where the Cardinals won 83 games and lucked into the post season would be completely meaningless. I'd enjoy the fact we won it but I'd understand we didn't in any shape or form deserve it and I'd think we just lucked into a title while 4 or 5 better teams missed the cut. I'd rather have a dominant team that deserved to win the World Series like what we had in say 2011 than the scrubs that have actually won the WS the past 3 years which in no way shape or form actually had one of the 4 or 5 best teams in the game.
  14. MLB has looked like complete idiots for the past 2.5 years now from all of this. The sad part is the majority of fans just watch ESPN and believe everything they post so they ignore how idiotic MLB has acted and the educated few realize that MLB is so completely wrong on the subject that Selig should probably be fired and I say that as someone who has generally been positive on his mark on the game.
  15. One man's overreach is another man's due diligence. I really like that they're going to all measures instead of just throwing their hands in the air. Considering they stand almost no chance of succeeding it just seems like throwing money away more than anything. I guess it is good PR to placate fans.
  16. With 33 K to 13 BB which are still absolutely great ratios. He gave up a bunch of hits and HR and that points directly towards being fatigued and missing high. Fiers is the 2nd safest pitcher in the rotation imo. His 2nd half FIP and xFIP were still 3.67. It is hard to strike out that many and walk that few and be a bad pitcher and to be honest he had the best minor league stats of any of the newer guys too, it is really unlikely that he collapses. he has the same issue Estrada does though that he might give up too many HR.
  17. This reeks of desperation.
  18. Wouldn't a Braun suspension be 100 games? Officially, that would be a second violation or a second positive test. I've heard that just because the suspension was overturned on appeal doesn't negate the violation or test and that any suspension would be 100 games. Though I can't find any decisive language in documents online or otherwise. Braun has never failed a drug test. Once it is appealed it is like it never happened. It is extremely unlikely that Braun is suspended even if they find someone that is willing to say they saw him buy steroids. The players union is way too strong for that. Just because they say they are going hardcore after Braun doesn't mean they think there is a chance they can suspend him. It is just there for the media to eat up and talk about.
  19. This is certainly not anywhere near an option, that would be a completely disaster. If they really want to find a spot for Davis you stick him in AAA or AA at 1B and get him reps there. Then you either trade Hart when he is healthy or you let him walk at the end of the year and put Davis in at 1B next year. For the 2nd half of this year he can be a backup OF and backup 1B and fill in at DH if things are going well with the move. If you think Morris is the future at 1B then you trade Aoki for a future 3B and let Davis play RF or something of that sort. If he learns 1B than 1 of the 4 guys we have that he could fill in for will likely get hurt at some point and make room for him.
  20. http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/blog/eye-on-baseball/21924907 I never thought he'd make it as a starter but I can't say I look forward to facing him as the closer either. This significantly cuts into the Red's starter depth though. Their pitching prospects are mostly A and AA right now and the filler guys they have after the top 5 are pretty weak. That is one nasty bullpen though.
  21. It is hard for me to get too upset about Green not playing considering I think he will fail at a full time role. I'd love to see Morris or Davis handed the job assuming Davis can play 1B which I honestly have no clue if he can. I don't think you throw a rookie who has never played a position into the role though, that is a bit too much to ask. The Brewers better not throw Rogers in the rotation just because he is young though, he has looked awful this spring, was awful in the minors last year and the good stretch he put up in the majors was full of red flags. If Narveson throws a couple more good games I fully expect him to get that role.
  22. There is no way the players union will stand for this anyway. I don't think the owners will either to be honest. What stops a player from making crud up about a player on a competing team in their division. This is just too slippery of a slope to go down. Just like with the first Braun suspension this will be a case where MLB learns they aren't as powerful as they think they are and will come out look like morons to the educated while the players look bad to the senseless masses.
  23. I don't know about this year but I know the first WBC their team trained as a team well before spring training USA time to get in shape for the games. I can't really evaluate the Japanese players because I don't know them but every WBC has seen a bunch of US players who just look like their timing is off. You see the same thing in spring training and even into April for a lot of players in the majors.
  24. I actually expect Fiers to have a sub 3.8 ERA so I'm absolutely fine with Gallardo, Estrada and Fiers as a top 3 though they might wear out towards the end of the season. I don't have much faith in anyone else to fill out #4 and #5 for 2012 though. I think Peralta will eventually be good but he still struggles too much with his control for me to have faith in him for 2012.
  25. But we aren't heading towards that point at all, this is just your negative nelly attitude at work. We have the entire core of the team locked up for multiple years and a young rotation that is going to enter their prime during that same time frame and since they have done a decent job of keeping the contracts small we have financial flexibility to fill in holes in the next few years. There is no reason to think the team is going to collapse anytime soon. The team doesn't have a clear hole on it right now and they decided not to blow a bunch of cash for depth which may be a bad thing. Considering they signed Gomez to that deal they appear to believe in him and if he produces like he has that is a team friendly deal. That comes down to Hart being the one trade commodity we had and he is the one guy we always hear rumors about so I have to think Melvin just hasn't gotten a good offer. He is slow enough now that he is a below average RF defensively and there is absolutely no market for 1B right now as seen by the FA greeting LaRoche got where basically nobody wanted him. There was absolutely no market for Gomez either once Span and Revere were traded as seen by how Bourn's offseason went. These are the phantom trades you keep talking about that just don't make any sense in the real world.
