  1. While I think the bullpen is going to stink this was death by a thousand paper cuts. Those types of outings are just gonna happen sometimes, that is how BABIP got its start~.
  2. Gamel should have been in AAA working on his defense if he wasn't going to play. Being completely results oriented just makes your entire point worthless. Regardless of what the player would rather be doing there is a right choice the team should be making. I'm not sure Davis is the type of player it matters with but Gamel was that kind of player and we handled him poorly.
  3. The thing with Henderson and Axford is they look good when they are on but they can't seem to repeat it consistently. I will wait until they've pitched 5 or 6 games to see what I think with them.
  4. You are being silly if you put any stock into what he did before 2010, he had a completely different repertoire at that point. Having said that his peripherals suggest he is more of a #3 starter so that is probably what we will get, something like a 3.70-4.00 ERA.
  5. Astros are ahead of the Marlins imo. Castro, Wallace, Altuve, Cedeno, Dominquez, Maxwell, Carter and Pena have all been productive regulars or high upside prospects at one point or another. There is some sort of scenario where that isn't a bad lineup.
  6. Braun or Gallardo +. Braun would be way too much. Gallardo would make sense though as a starting point. I think you underestimate how team friendly Braun's deal is and how likely Profar is to be a star.
  7. This is probably a good sign that he is consciously working on his plate discipline. That doesn't mean it will carry over into the regular season though. Last year as an example Liriano was striking everyone out and not walking anyone and it hit regular season and he still stunk.
  8. This is where you lost me. I expect last year to be Posey's career year in value. The deal is probably fine but those late seasons when they are paying him to be a really good but not elite 1B will probably eat away at its value.
  9. I'm not sure I would call Stinson talent, he has been bad for years now in the minors.
  10. Well if you read the article it is nothing but a fluff piece. It is just his opinion based on well, nothing. The minor league guy isn't protected by the players union. It didn't even include anything saying he had a source that said it was going to happen or anything like that. It is just him spouting out a nonsensical random opinion.
  11. It is a hypothetical question is all. If I got to choose I'd rather have my team be a dominant team and win it even if it meant a bunch of rentals rather than being some team that everyone thinks just got lucky to make the playoffs and get hot at the right time but with all home grown guys. If you have to pick A or B I pick A.
  12. Well if Steve Phillips thinks it will happen I feel much better about it not happening, that guy is a complete dolt.
  13. I hope this is just an April thing and he is sent down once they go back to 12 pitchers. He doesn't really profile as a bullpen arm long term.
  14. We had the 2nd best team in the NFL that year statistically. That is the last Super Bowl that actually featured two of the best teams even if the better team lost. Did you read this post out of context or did you see what I was replying to? I'd rather have a really good team win the world series even if it meant we had a bunch of players who were only on the team 2 or 3 years than having a team of all home grown guys who won 84 games and lucked into a world series win. I'm not sure how you can disagree with that so strongly.
  15. I really like what the Brewers have done with the roster but I don't want them to sign Hart who looks to be a player who isn't going to age well and at a position where we have potential replacements in the minors. They have been shopping Hart for years now but nobody wants him so I think it will take a major injury to a contender at 1B to get rid of him. There are just too many young 1B out there for a team to want to take Hart off our hands. I also don't want to sign Weeks to an extension. Just too much injury risk and his defense has never come around enough. He is another guy I don't expect to age very well.
  16. There are a lot of sneaky reasons that Lohse is better than the Suppan on top of the obviously just better peripherals. 1) He doesn't walk anyone which hides his strike out rate a bit. His K% is around 14-16%. Suppan was at a 12-13% as a Cardinal. His BB% is only 4-5% while Suppan was 7-8%. These don't look as big when you just look at totals but they are pretty huge when you look at rates. 2) He gets ahead of hitters. His first pitch strike% sits at around 68% while Suppan mostly lived at 60%. 3) He doesn't have many bad starts. He had 10% disasters in 2011 and didn't have a single disaster start in 2012. 10% is a pretty elite number. 4) He doesn't have a split since he developed the sinker. This is absolutely a huge advantage especially in a park that inflates lefties like Miller park. Lefties really killed Suppan.
  17. That was post good young pitching when they went out and got Soriano though and that deal was outrageous. I think you are trying to make something out of nothing. The first 2 years of Soriano they made the playoffs so if they had signed him to a 3 year deal it would have actually been a good one. That was an old team headed in the wrong way already when they signed Soriano. The average age of the starting lineup was over 30. The Brewers roster is much more spread out than that with mid 20 guys in Gomez and Lucroy and early 20 in Segura. The Brewers farm system is much deeper than the Cubs were back then as well. What the Cubs were back then is what the Brewers will be in 3-4 years assuming absolutely nothing changes with the team.
  18. The Cubs used the sign a bunch of veterans when you don't have good young player strategy. It is completely different and it was pretty foolish.
  19. The Hart situation is nothing like the Lohse one but I would rather not sign Hart long term personally. I don't think he is going to age well.
  20. The Cardinals defense was below average last year and while Lohse is a GB guy he isn't extreme. The park is probably a bigger factor than defense.
  21. A) Nobody but Gallardo has started 30 games in the majors in a season before or broken 165 IP. B) Yeah I should have said inexperienced. The same logic applies though. There was simply way too much risk in that rotation to rely on it. That doesn't mean we had to sign Lohse mind you, it just meant that it was a very obvious need for the team to sign some sort of FA starter to give the rotation a little more depth.
  22. $9M profit but he also put money into the park last year which ate into the total.
  23. We have plenty of prospects to cover this, don't buy into the silliness about the minor league system being awful. It isn't high upside, it isn't useless. Lets go in the wayback machine to 2006. Fielder was our only A prospect at that point. Braun was B+, Capellan was our #3. Hart, Zach Jackson, Gallardo and Eveland were B's. Rogers, Cruz, Inman and Dillard were B-. We had 9 more C+ prospects of which one has become a real quality major league player and that was Escobar. At that point we were considered to have a really good system. This year we were rated as 4 B guys, 7 B- guys, 11 C+ guys. So lets say the same basic rates apply here. We don't have a Braun or Fielder which obvious sucks. We have probably 2 really quality major league guys from that group of 4 B. We have maybe 2 quality major league guys from the B- pool. Out of that 11 C+ tier we have maybe 2 good major league guys and another 2 fringe types. so right now in the minors we likely have 4-6 quality major league players and a 2 or 3 fringe types. More than enough fire power to fill in holes in a decent roster. Not the type of minor league system you want to build around but we have enough quality players signed that we don't need to build around this next wave.
