  1. Pretty much this. You are placing the blame in like the 5th best place to blame it. The team wasn't doing cartwheels because Alex Gonzalez could probably be a short term gap at 1B while they waited to see how long Hart was going to be out but if they didn't want to bring up Morris for whatever reason it probably made as much sense as signing some really cruddy over the hill 1B who should be out of the league. Gonzalez is more than capable of playing 1B in the majors, sadly Yuni B probably isn't as we have seen from how lax he has looked at the position. Once we were on our 4th option at the position we could be pretty sure that we weren't going to get any real offense for April.
  2. What really bothered me is that he looked pretty bad but managed to complete a scoreless inning. What could have been a nice stepping stone towards fixing his issues and a winnable game turned into a really obvious 2 point deficit before we even got another out. There was no reason to think he would survive a 2nd inning today. This is an actual case of the manager doing a poor job unlike a lot of the little things people love to complain about, I was expecting a lot more people to be complaining about it.
  3. You were going to blame him no matter what happens so guess it isn't really worth discussing. The team isn't in the bad place it is right now because of Alex Gonzalez, he is far from the problem. The problem is the most injuries of any team in the league, a rotation that can't find the strike zone and a poorly built bullpen that is pitching as expected.
  4. So had we signed Lyle Overbay and he got hurt you'd be fine? Seems like a stretch to me. There was no reason to think Gonzalez couldn't handle 1B for a couple weeks while they assessed the situation. Not like it takes a lot of time to call up a 1B which we have plenty of in the minors if we just wanted a body to fill the position. Having Gonzalez penciled in at 1B is not the problem, having more than half a lineup injured is.
  5. Well, for one, it wasn't two injuries, it was four. Braun, Ramirez, Hart, Green (who could've at least been the LH half of a platoon at 1B). Any team loses 3 all-star caliber players, their lineup takes a hit. You forgot Gamel so it was actually five and yes when you get an injury stack like this it is a complete killer for any team, hard sell to try to blame Melvin for this. At this point it seems silly not to bring up Morris though and just hope he gets it fast.
  6. Relievers are fickle, no reason Axford can't be completely dominating the rest of the season or just awful and out of baseball. I think you pull him from the role and pitch him in low pressure situations for a while until he works it out. I'd give the nod to Big Jim for now considering most of the rest of the bullpen is awful.
  7. Steroids weren't even a major reason for the HR records, they were part of the issue but it wasn't the driving force. Expansion and the goofy balls have more to do with it than steroids which just added on to the rest.
  8. Signing him was my worst nightmare...starting at 1B is enough to make my head explode. They might as well bring Braden Looper back...and let him fight with Kotsay for CF. If our top 5 CF all got hurt it would probably be a valid move to bring Kotsay back. We have had a major injury stack and any time that happens you are mostly screwed. We are in as bad a spot as the Yankees are for injuries at this point.
  9. The Cardinals had a really strong bullpen to choose from that year even if they blew a number of saves. The Brewers bullpen is one of the weaker in the NL so it is going to be a struggle closing games unless Axford or Henderson really get going.
  10. The entire bullpen.
  11. Yeah I would guess Morris is up if Aramis is on the DL. You can limp by with one MI playing 1B but not in both corners. That about sums up this season, 2 runs score on a goofy bounce off the umpire from a wild pitch.
  12. His fastball was clocked at 91-93 last night so depending on whether that is an injury or what it probably means he won't be effective until it goes back up.
  13. I would almost rather it was JUST the HR, you can call that some bad luck or whatever, but above and beyond the 8 (?) HR in 3 games, the 40 hits is very, very troublesome. To me the hits are more luck than the HR. Hits are just sort of random noise most of the time, HR are usually poor pitches. Especially this series where the Rockies had 9 infield hits which is just insane for a 3 game series. You should expect 2 or 3 instead of 9.
  14. Really? He pretty much ran the bullpen just like he should have. It isn't the managers fault that Axford blew the game up.
  15. I didn't see the poll but I'm very excited to see Fiers pitch. I'm fascinated by pitchers like him. Like a much better version of David Bush.
  16. Actually I didn't want to search for who said it. Infield hit #9 for the series? Nm they called it an error.
  17. Also to the guy calling the Rockies last place rejects... With Tulo and CarGo they have been a well above .500 team, it is only when those guys get hurt that they tend to collapse.
  18. Your best bet is to simply ignore the first 2 weeks of the season because they don't mean squat in the long term (other than obviously counting in the W/L column but you know what I mean). The Brewers team an over the top delivery to all of their starters. This leads to a lot of Ks. If the pitchers miss down it leads to a lot of BB, if they are missing up it leads to a lot of HR and hits. This is a case of pitchers just not having good control yet and a little bit of bad luck considering the Rockies have like 7 infield hits in a 3 game series which is insane.
  19. Rays are starting Kelly Johnson at 1B tonight and they don't even have an injury as an excuse~.
  20. Nope it doesn't make a difference. They are all mediocre hitters and none of them are going to 'protect' anyone. This isn't even worth complaining about imo. Segura batting 2nd might make some sort of sense with Weeks down at #5 but Gomez should never sniff the top of the order so it would have to be Segura moved up.
  21. Last year he saw 3.39 pitchers per PA. So far this year he has seen 3.5. It is too early to read anything into this but he doesn't seem to be on a different path yet. You can generally throw out the first 2 weeks of the season though because they always are so goofy.
  22. 12-14 We tend to start slow and we always seem to stink against west coast teams.
  23. I like Lucroy batting 5th while Hart is out. He is easily the best hitter after the top 4 in the order.
