  1. The Brewers alotted 7.5 million in signing bonuses in 2011 and generally rate in the middle of the pack when it comes to their willingness to spend money in the draft. The average signing for an offensive HS player in the bottom of the 1st round is around 2.5million. The problem is we have two first rounders, a supplemental, and the entire rest of the draft to go. I just don't see the Brewers drafting two HS players risking their signability whilst paying them 50-70 percent of the draft budget to do so. This issue would have been more amplified if the picks were higher in the first round as well. In a way we're sort of lucky after all that the Blue Jays or the Mariners didn't sign Prince. (Imagine having to pay one of the two picks 5-6 million to sign) http://www.baseballameric...draft/category/signings/
  2. Because a small-market team will have to pass up on high-level HS talent for the mere risk that they won't be able to sign them. Large-market clubs have the resources to cushion the impact from failing to sign top-round talents (by adding via other means; international markets, free agency, etc). Take last year for example. Should there be a situation such as in 2011 where compensation was received (such as for Covey) and we have two high first-round picks under this agreement it would make it extremely difficult to sign both with the draft pool allotted. Should we sign both and punt the other rounds? My bet is that your going to see more of this situation. Teams awarded a high first-round compensatory pick (in addition to their existing pick) will most certainly have to have a "budget pick" contained within the pair. Only the deemed "cant miss" HS talent are going to get bonuses over slot (The Bundy's, The Bradley's, The Starlings). The Josh Bell's (the Brandon Nimmo's, the Taylor Guerreri's) of the world....they are going to go to college.
  3. Josh Bell went for more than that as a prime example of someone who already fell (under the old agreement) because of signability and commitment. Signing over-slot will be more difficult than ever, especially for a small-market team. I don't put anymore credit than you do regarding mock drafts, but there's a reason that HS talents tend to be falling in them.
  4. People need to remember it's going to me MUCH harder to draft over slot, and much harder to get compensation for multiple picks in the future under the revised CBA. Fans may want us to go out and draft HS hitters but this may not be safe. This is why you will see top high-school talent such as Gavin Cecchini, Addison Russell, and others start to decline in mock drafts as this settles in. The stronger the college commitments get for these kids the harder it will be to sign them as it's more difficult to go over slot now. This is not a friendly situation to a small-market club and a system that I am highly against. But the Brewers can't afford to miss early round signings if they want to remain competitive in the short term; which is sadly why I see them signing college offense in the 2012 draft.
  5. The best Uecker call of all time. A gift for my brewer fans.... Easter Sunday 1987 - George Webs Day - 12-in-a-row! Do you Believe It? http://www.mediafire.com/?28amdzy6seg35cg Edited by me to fit a common ringtone length. Cheers!
  6. Gamel seems like the Ben Hendrickson of hitters. Just can't make the final transition. I see Hart there by the end of April full time which will be a shame. I hope I'm wrong.
  7. Player of the Year: Zach Greinke - The extra innings after missing a month will dilute the bad inning here and there. He'll win the Cy Young Award. Pitcher of the Year: Zach Greinke - He'll win the Cy Young award. He was the second-half Cy winner last season. Rookie of the Year: Taylor Green - I don't think he'll have a huge year but he's one injury away behind two injury-prone players (Weeks, Ramirez) Most Improved Player(s): Manny Parra - Irony is the most powerful thing in the universe and Prince Fielder has departed..... Biggest Drop-off(s): John Axford - I don't see a huge decline, but repeating that season would be insane. Questions Answered: 1) Who will get the first contract extension? Zack Greinke 2) Who will be the first traded away or released (off the expected 25 man roster)? Francisco Rodriguez - If we don't contend he'd be the most likely traded. 3) What position in the NL Central will the Brewers finish? 1st (93 wins)
  8. Player of the Year: Tyler Thornburg - He takes another step forward and puts himself into the top 50 prospects in baseball. Pitcher of the Year: Taylor Jungmann - I think it's easy for people to forget how good this kid really is after coming out of that draft. Top five in another year. New-Comer Biggest splash: Jorge Lopez - Really psyched about this kid. Looking for him to make Gallardo-type noise. Most Improved Player: Kentrail Davis - .325/.429/.519 in the AFL and knows how to get on base (24/13 K/BB) (I just didn't have enough stones to put Orlando Arcia in here, but I think this kid's going to be great)
  9. Exactly. This list is a joke. On the other hand, most lists have Jameson Taillion over Gerrit Cole which is something I don't agree with. Tyler Skaggs ranked 26 - behind Cosart and Martinez - is kind of a joke too. (As is Aaron Hicks inclusion on this list)
  10. Average fans will never realize what signing a Japanese star does to their team's economics. The posting fee may have been more than C.J. Wilson's offer by the Rangers, but that doesn't necessarily mean he's the better pitcher.
  11. I think there was talk of Alonso in another thread and a lot of people pretty much agreed that compared to what it would take to trade for him, he wouldn't provide much more value than Gamel. All things being equal I'd probably prefer Alonso since he's younger and has "proven" himself moreso than Gamel to this point. But I wouldn't give up much to get him.At this point Alonso's bat is WAY more polished than Gamel. I don't think it's fair comparing Gamel to Alonso at this point.
  12. I'm convinced some people simply don't like Hart. Maybe it's his streakiness, maybe it's his mannerisms. But I compare Hart very strongly to Jason Werth. Milwaukee fans should be thanking their lucky stars that we have him under this contract. Hart is in the top two or three RF's in the National League.
  13. I have seen Weeks all over the place in these hypothetical lineups but my gut tells me that he hits fifth this season if Braun is cleared. Although I may or may not agree with putting Weeks behind your cleanup hitter, there seemed to be a lot of approval over this move in 2011. I really hope Aoki pans out and has the skills to hit leadoff.
  14. Can we please get a Power-50 update this prospect/holiday season!!! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  15. I was all set to jump all over this but it's sort of true. Wandy, however, put up slightly better strikeout/ERA numbers in a comparable park, for a way-worse team. Basically, at this point they are pretty similar though. That being said, I'm not sure the Brewers aim to get less financially flexible (with Wandy) as they currently are (with Wolf). Honestly, even if Wolf puts up a replica-year in 2012, I let him walk in 2013. Unless he's willing to come back at about 4 million per. Peralta, Jungmann, and Bradley should be approaching at that point. Wolf isn't worth a $10 million dollar club option in 2013. (1.5million buy out)
  16. I am also sticking with my initial choice: The Seattle Mariners. Something weird is going on over there. Half of their people say they have no money, the other half say they have a ton.
  17. I think we will contend as it is now. Although I wouldn't mind Carlos Pena in a Brewers uniform I think that money should be dedicated to resigning pitching. We're kind of up a creek with Greinke and Marcum pending free-agents and Wolf with an expensive option (and really no pro-data on Jungmann or Bradley yet).
  18. The only thing that would hold me back is that Pena is a righty. The lineup is simply to RH-heavy as it is. I would be more comfortable with Pena in there vs. Gamel though. Pena is also an obvious upgrade defensively.
  19. If I were the Melvin I would be looking hard at the Red Sox. I think K-Rod may be able to pluck Jose Iglesias and a pitcher. Iglesias' stock has fallen, but he'd be a defensive option later on at a position where we don't have much after this year. Don't kid yourself people. I wouldn't expect Rodriguez to fetch a top-10-prospect type. We need to be realistic.
  20. Here is an AFL scouting report that my friend Wes did for ProjectProspect.com on Jed Bradley. Cheers. http://projectprospect.co...-bradley-scouting-report
  21. I'd rather take a shot at him (assuming the deal is friendly and 1-2 years) than bring back a 42-year-old Takashi Saito.
  22. Yonder Alonso is a much more polished hitter than Gamel. That being said I don't think he's still worth a financially controllable dominant closer.
  23. This should be the telling year for Hunter Morris. I know some coaches in the Cape Cod League that simply raved about Morris when he went thru there and I think his moderate-to-good 2011 may look better without the Florida State League's handicap. He tore up double-A in his brief stint last season. He's one of my favorites this season coming out of the FSL and his stock will rise.
  24. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that if we don't sign a couple of larger-profile free-agents that we should definitely act quickly regarding Greinke. If he's not willing to extend we need to see what we can get for him. I am weirded out by Greinke's flakiness and for me puts it well under 50% that he considers extending. Greinke is prime trade-bait. And if he isn't going to stay in Milwaukee we need to bring at least one blue-chip prospect back in return. I am not going to be satisfied with compensation picks in this situation. Everyone needs a frontline anchor with ceiling left.
  25. Bradley has reportedly signed for 2 million. 500k over slot. EDIT: Something called zoodig is reporting that. We'll see if it's true.
