  1. I still think somehow Braun won't be a Brewer come opening day. I wouldn't be opposed to including Perez with Braun. Braun + Perez for Puig, McCarthy and De Leon would seem to make some sense if the Dodgers were ready to give up on Puig. I would have to be absolutely overwhelmed to include Villar in any deal to LA. They are one of the few teams that have enough in the system where it could work with some creativity though I guess
  2. I would tend to agree on this. Did he max out his ability this last season? Maybe, but maybe not. Many people considered Altuve a nice stopgap 2B or potential utility player a few years back and he's progressed into one of the most dynamic 2B in the league. At this point, Perez has proven more than both Owens and Swihart. Frankly, Owens hasn't impressed at any level that I can see. Looks like a extreme fly ball guy with no fastball and without control. I'm sure that can change but to this point that's what he is. I don' think the initial proposal is too far off. IF the Sox thought they needed a supersub type and valued that flexibility and depth it might provide them this season, then they are in a position to deal from some of their catching depth. Personally, when I look at their roster I don't see the need but they are one of the few teams that has what could be considered some depth at catcher without a clear-cut favorite to win that job. It's not always about straight value in a trade for both sides. It might seem foolish for a team to give up 12 controllable years (or whatever is remaining for Swihart and Owens) for a few of another player but when you're trying to win and have a perceived need then I think those hard calculations/values maybe and should soften a bit. For a rebuilding team like the Brewers those value/potential > X value, type deals are absolutely necessary. That's a lot of rambling but, yes I could see that deal being made and it being solid from both sides.
  3. I don't buy the casual fan argument. The people I'd consider casual fans of the Brewers are still typically sports fans and or people looking for something entertaining to do. I'd argue that either of those groups could care less about the names on the jerseys. They'd like to see wins and/or come for a fun atmosphere. Mark A. has done a great job of investing money into the park and creating a family friendly and generally entertaining atmosphere. I don't think Braun being a Brewer affects attendance one way or another by name value; if you want to talk wins and "staying in" a race then that's an argument that could be made. We've seen some of the same song and dance with Lucroy last season. Brewers not motivated to trade, best offers are for backup catchers...etc etc. Then a deal comes together. I still think Braun gets moved by opening day.
  4. Boy, I'd have to be really shocked by the offer. A front-line starter type is the only thing right now that'd make much sense, imo. Yes, he could flame out but for half a season he's flashed all-star potential. He's the prototype the Brewers are trying to acquire so unless it's a Blake Snell type in return I'm not interested. There's still a whole lot of swing and miss in his game but if he progresses in that one area he could be a All-Star. Even if he doesn't improve in that area there's still plenty to like.
  5. I'm not so sure Nelson has a mental toughness issue as an inability to command his pitches. When he's on he can almost look like a "light" version of Garrett Richards but he's not been able to turn the corner for what-ever reason.
  6. I agree the salary is meaningless. I don't see a market for Scooter. He's not an upgrade for anybody as a starter that I can think of, outside of maybe the Dodgers. As a bench/role player his limited versatility hurts (as others have already noted).
  7. Is it a big deal to move? I don't know, but I don't think any of us can make that determination. I would agree that the burden of much of the actual process is probably less for a ball-player than an average person. I can see the other side of the argument and I understand letting the 10/5 go and keeping Braun. There's a solid argument to do that and it doesn't necessarily mean he couldn't be moved if the right situation presented itself later. For me, I just can't see losing essentially any remaining negotiating power with the best remaining potential trade asset on a team that's rebuilding.
  8. This is one where it's kind of hard to have a strong opinion one way or another. If he get's his BB/9 back in the low 2 range he cold have a nice bounce back season. The 20% hr rate seems a bit unlucky, although he's not really moving to a park where it will help him in that regard. The GB% also moved in a positive direction. Don't underestimate the power of the crafty lefty
  9. IMO, there's a 99.9% chance Braun is traded. There's no way I can see them letting the 10/5 status vest. For a rebuilding team to lose all leverage to a player who's trade value is at the highest it could be in a Brewers uniform doesn't make sense. And for all the "tank" theorists out there, he's adding wins . Whatever the best deal is they should take it. Obviously there's still some time for that to materialize. While I'd love it to be the Dodgers, I think the Giants present a much cleaner situation with all the variables involved. You don't want to be in a Brandon Phillips situation where you still have a decent player who's making a good chunk of money (potentially more than what he's worth) but really can't cut him and can't trade him.
  10. I understand your point and I share it to a degree. Sadly what some (you & I) would call hazing can be called team-building by others. Answer this: if the new ritual included "trust falls" and someone refused to participate, how would that go over?? If you were that person's teammate (that refused) could you fully support him or completely believe he had your back when things go wrong?? .......and this is exactly why you can't just pick and choose what is to be offensive. Even among our small group on this board people wouldn't agree. Just stop the ridiculous practice all together at all levels. Maybe I'm naive but I hadn't really thought about it happening at the MLB level. On a personal level, I find nothing about being blindfolded or trust falls or rope climbing, to be at all worthy of being called team building. I've done them all and it's a nice niche market for these organizations to sell a service but team building they are not. Agreed, grown men cant' be forced to do anything. However, peer pressure is still there even as an adult. If you've finally made in to the Majors and have 15 other guys telling you it's tradition to do something there's pressure there to not disappoint people and try to fit in.
  11. The nice thing about the Dodgers system is they could take their top guys off the table and there'd still be plenty to choose from. I'm getting antsy to see any rumor related to Braun.
  12. It's these types of deals that have me very excited for the future of this team and the plan that Stearns and his staff have. I don't know if everything will fall into place but there's a definite detailed plan. When you're trading backup catchers trying to extract value with extra service time and maybe a fraction of upside that's a great sign in my book.
  13. It's possible we already have one in waiting. I'll echo others, but just keep accumulating talent regardless of prospect ranking. Teams have proven that a team deep with very good players and not necessarily great players can win as well. And while I'd love another Braun or Fielder, or Trout, Kershaw, McCutchen or a Harper. None of those players have a championship. If they can accumulate a deep enough farm system while the MLB team improves they can deal from that surplus when the time is right if they need to add an ace or elite bat.
  14. Oh, my. Agreed with banning all of it. Who is to decide what's acceptable? What about barn yard animals or clowns? Can they dress as females who identify as male? Yes, I'd guess defensive hazing is still in
  15. I could see something centered around Arroyo and Beede with SF. I'd have a hard time taking on contracts or paying money for that level of prospect though.
  16. I agree. I think it's just a scenario of needing to move forward with the rebuild. The perfect scenario might not arise, but keeping him because you don't feel like the return is fair has a cost as well. Imo, it's important to have that roster spot for the Brewers to help evaluate and develop their next team. Stearns has not held guys, so I don't anticipate it happening now. For better or worse Braun isn't part of the future and he's kind of the last big piece to move.... the last big bridge to the old team
  17. I would agree. A team with an actual financial bind wouldn't have just spent what they did. I think it's more of how the Dodgers value Puig moving forward. Do they want him and want to deal with his immaturity at his most recent level of production? They have a whole host of OFs that could fill the role. Maybe not as well as Braun, but if they're willing to move forward with Puig then there's really no discussion. I think we've kind of made the assumption they don't want him but that might not necessarily be the case. All that said, I don't think there's any chance the Brewers allow Braun's 10/5 rights to kick in. I wouldn't rule out San Francisco as a landing spot with obviously a much lesser return than what we'd all like.
  18. I think you summed it up very well. For a team that has a supposed debt problem though, they sure don't show it very well by adding Hill and resigning Jansen and Turner.
  19. If it's weed I'm not concerned.
  20. Yes, I think I will be a bit disappointed if only because I feel like it's expected and there's a little bit of the Christmas morning type excitement to see what you got. His value will not get higher imo. There's also the whole 10/5 rights thing so I do think a deal gets done. I think it'll be an unexpected team somehow. The Dodgers have the prospects but honestly, their need is not an OF. I don't think however the contract would limit them at all. For all the talk about their supposed debt issue, they just went and signed Hill to what I would only describe as a horribly risky deal. If I'm them, 2B Dozier interests me far more than Braun.
  21. I'd take Uehara or Storen. I'd add Hochevar and Salas to the list of guys I'd like to see them make a play at.
  22. Sometime deals are neither won or lost. If you're committed to rebuilding, then the White Sox did well. If you're committed to winning now the Nats got a really good, time and cost controlled player in his prime who also fills a need on the roster. Another LH bat, lead off hitter and gives them the ability to move Turner back to SS. There's not much to dislike if you're a Washington fan. Obviously they gave up some nice prospects, but even as much as Giolito is hyped he still has proven absolutely nothing. He's Luke Hochevar for all we know.
  23. I think Villar holds a fairly significant amount of additional value over Thornburg. It certainly doesn't hurt to listen. I think he is the biggest trade asset on the team. Unless a team is willing to give up a Giolito or Glasnow type then I'm not interested. If he can play a league average defense at 2nd base, his offense makes him a star; one to either be with the next competitive team or to deal off, but I don't think his value has peaked yet.
  24. Wow. Nice.. for both sides. Entertaining day thus far
  25. Agreed. SS is not the black hole it was a few years back on rosters either. He hasn't really proven anything with his bat yet. Is he closer to Iglesias or closer to Lindor?
