  1. I don't believe the Brewers have any intention of selling or trading Knebel. I however, would like to explore that potential opportunity. Assuming that Tampa is in the market for some bullpen help: Knebel looks like the real deal right now. We all know relievers are a fickle bunch. I don't know that his value will get higher. Snell has been a bit disappointing with his control, is pretty much the Rays 5th starter and could be replaced internally by Honeywell if they wanted. I'm constantly reading about how we might mythically acquire a team's young controlled, future TOR type starter. I'm not sure Snell will reach that peak but I'd be willing to give up our current stud reliever to find out. Thoughts?
  2. What more does this guy need to do to earn a shot at the big league level? He doesn't really look like he has anything left to prove at the minor league levels. I understand he doesn't throw very hard but I have to feel like he could at least take up a bullpen spot, eat multiple innings if needed, spot start. Is he just not considered an MLB arm at this point? Has anybody seen him throw? Is he one of those guys that has lived off of great control in the minors but doesn't really have the stuff to get past MLB bats, or lacks command? I guess maybe if the Brewers weren't in the position they are now he would be getting a shot. If the Brewers were to swing some deals together in the upcoming days, he's a guy if I was the other team I'd ask for as a throw in.
  3. I feel the same way about Wilson as Sonny Gray. On their own, I don't think they make enough of a difference. I think they ultimately need a couple of buys if they are serious about really taking a shot at holding the division. I like Wilson. He's quite good and controlled for another year. As others have noted, the cost will likely be significant. Now, if somehow you can add Verlander to the deal, then I think things change a bit. If you can build something around Phillips, Diaz, Broxton then you might have a match.
  4. My expectation for next season is pretty much on par with how the team has performed so far. They've kind of set the bar a little higher, fair or not. I don't see many roster changes happening, but maybe I'm wrong as Stearns has proven to like to turn guys over so far. Maybe Brinson is the new CF, and Villar is replaced or plays better but outside of those two pieces, position player wise I don't see many changes. I think it is important to give Hader and Woodruff, maybe even Burnes a couple cracks at starting down the stretch to find out if they can be future pieces to that rotation and to give them some experience. It's tough to count on 1st and 2nd year pitching to make a significant impact. I'd expect Nelson and Anderson to be the only 2 sure bets in the rotation next season. If they can carry forward their success from this season that would be huge. Overall, I'd expect to be in a similar situation next season. The pitching will likely continue to lag behind the hitting but we hopefully will have a better idea of what pitchers are going to be future rotation pieces.
  5. True, but that's also the reason he could be available. If the Tigers were to take on 7-8 million per season and include Wilson in a deal I could see giving something of value to pull something together. Verlander hasn't lost the velocity yet so that's encouraging at least. It's his control that's left him. There are a lot of obstacles to clear to make something happen with him but you never know. It'd be an interesting acquisition provided (like any other deal) we don't overpay. I'm assuming the price has escalated on Gray and perhaps they've moved on.
  6. Yeah, the offense is just slumping a bit now. I think we could all anticipate some extended slumps with the free swingers on this team. For the most part they've worked around it with different guys getting hot and being versatile and playing matchups and hot hands. I don't see much difference now other than them not hitting the clutch 2-3 run homers. The pitching has been fine just need to wake the bats up. Everything went right for Pittsburgh so I guess good on them. Still in first place. Can't let this series dictate the next one.
  7. Play it out. I don't consider the 1-game thing a playoff.
  8. Another day in 1st place with Nelson on the hill. Everything that got them to this point has still been there except for a few timely hits. It breaks open for them today!
  9. http://assets.academy.com/mgen/29/10471429.jpg
  10. This feels like it would be a big win if they can get this one the way Cole is throwing and end the 3 game skid. Also, nice to have Nelson pitching tomorrow.
  11. If they can use technology to be more accurate and not slow the game down I'd be for that. At this point the replays are slowing the game down more than they should be. There should be a different system in place to review or remove a field umpire in favor of a full time video/tech ump. Also, while it might seem like the electronic strike zone is the way to go, I'd imagine you'd still need somebody setting the upper and lower limit per batter. Just like humans fail, we can agree that computers are not always perfect either. It's all great in theory and count me in as wanting more investigation and progress towards moving things that way but there's a lot of work to be done to efficiently integrate some of the things people are wanting.
  12. I think this would be fair. Personally, I'd exclude the 4th piece. I think those top three are enough but I wouldn't be horrified to include one more piece. We can throw around other pitchers names that may or may not be available but Gray IS a guy that's known to be available. Whether or not people are high enough on him to be a true difference maker I guess is a matter of opinion, but I don't think it's a stretch to say he'd instantly become our 2nd best pitcher and when he's right can pitch like an ace for stretches of time. I'm ready to find out if he can close out 2017 like an ace in a Brewer uniform. With all the chatter about the Brewers being the most interested, I actually do feel like they will strike up a deal. They're still going to have to outbid a few teams so I'd expect the cost to be significant but the Brewers might have more depth in their system to get them over the top without giving up their very high end guys.
  13. I guess I must be in the minority. I think it works for both teams. The Sox did acquired a top 40 guy in Rutherford and what looks like some decent back end of the roster potential down the road. The Yankees improved their roster. Robertson is pitching like his old self this season and Kahnle is putting up Knebel type numbers. It probably gives them the best bullpen in the AL. Frazier, while not a star is better than what they currently have and is another power threat in that lineup. I don't think there's an argument on if they got better, you could argue how much but I would guess there's a really good chance they're not done. They still have the pieces to land a starting pitcher. I fully expect them to do that.
  14. I would give up a ton for Fulmer. He's not only controlled and very good but he's still young enough that you wonder if he might still have some upside left. If he was to make some sort of adjustment and started whiffing a few more batters he'd be in the top tier of starters.
  15. Alright, I'll preface this with an obvious statement. This is mostly an unrealistic scenario with too many moving parts to ever happen. So, it's mostly for my entertainment. Miami, in the midst of (hopefully) an ownership change and a potential fire sale (again) have been rumored to be wanting to move Stanton's contract. Who wouldn't. Obviously it would be easiest to find somebody to just take the contract and have them ship a token player or prospect back in return but....... San Francisco has reportedly inquired about Stanton and has an obvious need. Milwaukee: Could help facilitate a deal by taking on some salary from the Giants (Samardzija) and providing Miami with some prospects which maybe wouldn't be available to them if dealing with a single team only really wanting to take on the contract for Stanton and not give players. Miami gives: Stanton, Straily, Phelps Get: Phillips, Cordell, Dubon, Peralta, Beede, Arroyo Giants Give: Samardzija, Beede, Arroyo GET: Stanton Brewers Give: Phillips, Cordell, Dubon, F. Peralta GET: Samardzija, Straily, Phelps The Marlins get a slew of MLB ready or close to it players to field when they continue their sale and clear Stanton's contract. The Giants get their guy and the Brewers do some one-stop shopping and fill the remainder of their needs this season without emptying the farm and controlling them for more than a year.
  16. Go easy people. At some point they were going to lose 2 in a row. When your starter doesn't make it out of the 5th and you score 2 runs you can try to place blame every which direction but most teams in the league aren't winning that game given those parameters.
  17. I think this is a really fair reality check. I'd include myself in the group of people that is overly sensitive to trying to keep anything that resembles a potential above average MLB starting pitcher. Brinson is a super prospect. He should be starting for somebody next season; hopefully he's out in CF for the Brewers. I would agree, if you really take a step back and look at the total player, the odds are much greater Brinson becomes an above average player vs even one of Woodruff or Ortiz becoming an above average starter. I don't want to deal Brinson but could accept the cost for Gray. I'd prefer to strike up a lesser deal with some other players personally but I trust what this management is building. I could not accept both Brinson and Woodruff/Oritz/Hader. Honestly, for Gray if you're including Brinson you shouldn't need much else. Sure he was underwhelming in his first taste but he's in the top handful of OF prospects and is as close to proven as you can get without extended playing time in MLB.
  18. Agreed. If they are choosing to "go for it" then I wouldn't subtract anybody from what they've constructed with their roster of position players. That is what makes them a potentially special team. They just need more pitching. I could accept giving up Brinson for Gray. If you offer him up that should put you in every conversation vs another teams offer. What I don't want is an over pay for a good but not great pitcher. Brinson + Dubon/Diaz+ Peralta? or some other lesser 3rd piece is as far as I'd go. If that gets beat then move on. I'd be curious to find out if Brinson was on the table in the Quintana talks. If he was I'd have to believe that DS wasn't willing to include another significant piece to push it in the Brewers favor. If he wouldn't cave for Quintana I wouldn't expect an overpay for Gray.
  19. Sounds like I have a more loose interpretation of "core". I'd consider Core different than Franchise Cornerstone types. I don't see any Franchise types on the current roster or really in the minors. Maybe Arcia. I guess I consider core guys who you'd like to be here 5-6 years; guys you'd explore extending beyond their arbitration years. I'm not saying they're Braun or Fielder. They are guys I see being part of the vision for the future and not place holders or potential trade chips.
  20. I'd like to know people's opinion on the following three players: Jimmy Nelson, Travis Shaw, and Domingo Santana I'm starting to feel like these three might be current and future core guys. Shaw, this season he is currently sitting between two guys by the names of Bryant and Arenado in OPS. Is this a career year or has he made some fundamental changes and this is a real representation of the player he is? Santana, is currently sitting at about a .900 OPS, and has improved his R/L splits this season. I tend to think there might be some untapped potential even still in that bat. I think most of us would agree he's got some defensive shortcomings but the bat is above average. Should he be in the discussion for extension talks? Do others think there's an additional level for him to reach yet? Jimmy Nelson: Is this the ACE we've been waiting for? He's hanging out with the likes of Strasburg and Greinke in terms of WAR (Fangraphs) this season. Just a couple months ago I was insisting he'd never figure it out and should be shifted to the bullpen. Glad I was wrong on that. Has he turned a corner and figured "IT" out or will he regress back to being an inconsistent strike thrower? He's got the body frame, velocity, K/BB% and GB% now and looks the part. I'm almost to the point where it might be time to take the plunge with him and really consider getting him locked up. If he continues the success through the end of the season, I think extending him in the off-season becomes a priority. Opinions?
  21. Lots of interesting discussion. It's still a tough decision. Anything including Hader, Woodruff, Oritiz, Burnes or Brinson I'm out on. I'd offer up Ray, a choice of Dubon/Diaz/Phillips/Cordell/ and Peralta. If somebody outbids, so be it. I see some people questioning Hader's value (not sure if it was this thread). After watching him throw, there's no way I'd include him for the likes of a Sonny Gray. Yes, his control is shaky, but he's been able to work around it and that arm if he figures out the control is elite. Even if he never makes it out of the bullpen, there's no way I'm taking the chance on letting him get away for two years of a mid-rotation-ish starter.
  22. Fulmer will command more than I care to give up. I mean if he's actually available, he'd be one of the few guys I could understand paying a premium for.
