  1. Like some of you I also, my initial reaction was, "meh, not exciting" but the more I think about it and read other's comments on the two prospects the more I like it. Shaw is controllable which is nice, and can be league average against rhp. Maybe there's a bit of room for some upside but even if he is what he is, he's a MLB caliber 3B even if on the low end. Maybe he carves out a Trevor Plouff type career. Dubon looks like a real nice prospect and Pennington is a decent gamble with a potential plus fastball. I really like the fact Shaw gives them some more flexibility and hopefully leaves Perez as super-sub type. It still feel like there is a definite plan in place, which to me is the most important piece to this. Just by this deal and the Thames signing it does really feel like they are targeting guys and roles on this year's roster. I'm looking forward to see what other deals fall into place this off-season.
  2. I like the creativity. Wasn't it about this time last year they signed Guerra, who turned out to arguably be the team's best pitcher last season? There's nothing really lost at 5 m/year. Maybe he ends up being a 1-2 win player and that's enough to justify the risk. There might be something to having had to immerse himself in a different culture and think differently and be coached differently. Maybe he really has figured out something since he left that can translate. If Justin Turner can morph himself into a power hitting third baseman from a fringe utility infielder in two years then I believe anything is possible.
  3. I think you'd really have to dig deep to find 3 realistic moves that would turn this team into a contender, although with the extra wildcard I suppose it's not completely out of the realm of possibility. I, in no way, am willing to give up what they are building... even in this supposed scenario. 1. Sign Ivan Nova. Maybe he could be had for 3/38 mil. Probably will take 4 years in a pitching thin market. 2. Sign Valbuena to play 3B. I'm not sure in what universe I would've thought that'd a good idea but maybe a couple years for 14-15 mil. is doable. 3. Trade Braun to the Dodgers for Jose De Leon +. I'd give Santana RF, Broxton CF, and hope LF can be manned by some combination of Reed/Cordell/Brinson. I know that seems counter productive to being competitive in 2017 but crazy things would have to happen anyway and unless the pitching improves there is no chance. 1. Villar 2B 2. Reed LF - still holding out hope there's some Scotty Po in there somewhere with the bat. Brinson comes up mid-season-ish 3. Valbuena 3B 4. Carter 1B 5. Broxton CF - I'm REAAALLY hoping the small sample late in the year is somewhat for real 6. Santana rf - kind of an x-factor. Still has a chance to be special imo. He'll need to be if they'll compete in 2017 7. Arcia ss 8. Susac Perez as the super-sub getting regular playing time 1. Guerra 2. Davies 3. Nova 4. De Leon 5. Neslon/Peralta/Garza 6. Hader - Waiting for his chance.
  4. Seems to make good sense. I'm surprised De Leon isn't up yet. Seems like a waste at AAA for a competing team. I'd do De Leon straight up if they'd accept.
  5. In the right situation he has a small amount of trade value. I guess it depends on what you consider value; if a return of anything qualifies as value then I guess he does. Maaybee Oakland would view him as an upgrade in the off season. Try to get him through waivers. I could see a scenario where he'd have value on a contender as a bench player. I'm not sure what the return would be, an A ball lotto ticket maybe.
  6. This is one my favorite lines posted on this board. I think some of you are making too big a deal about this. The odds are obviously against him, however if you're an athlete, you're an athlete. It's not like this is unprecedented. Brian Jordan, Bo Jackson, Deion Sanders were all football first types, granted I think all of them played college baseball as well. There are also guys who flip from pitching to hitting and have had some success. Ankiel comes to mind. If he is truly committed to it, I think there's a chance.
  7. I believe Villar will be the most valuable potential trade piece in the Brewers off-season if Arcia proves he can handle ss for the remainder of the season. If people are still sold on trying to get that illusive front-line starter, Villar is the guy to shop. I'm not saying they should trade him. The Brewers should just line him up at 2b and let him lead off for the next 4 years but I think he could bring the return that some thought Lucroy would bring.
  8. I have watched him since he played his first game with Brevard County. No need to panic, no need for concern. Sure, there are growing pains and he said after his first game, there is a big difference between college and pro ball. He knew it was going to take time to adjust and he deserves that time. He is not taking wild swings, he's making plays in the OF and he will be everything a 1st -round pick should be, at least in my estimation. As you said, it's a small sample size, but he has shown glimpses of what he's capable of. I think he will be fine. Not only that, but he's got his head on straight and he's a down-to-earth kid. One of the best interviews I've done in my two years covering the team. Good stuff, thanks for the info. I also didn't realize Brevard was such a difficult place to hit. Good to hear the others aren't overly concerned and that maybe the club just wanted to challenge him immediately.
  9. I agree. 6-7 years from now he might very well be on the decline as a MI. He's a nice player but I don't think he's a game changer. Who's to say he didn't earn a promotion? If they view him as a .260-.270 hitter with some speed and modest power then he's ready. MLB experience is required at some point to progress. That said, I'm suprised,
  10. I think Garza clears. Braun would not but it might be an interesting case to see who claims him and if they'd have any real interest.
  11. Agree. Prospects are still just prospects but they are acquiring a nice group of them! I'm also happy there seems to be a plan, obviously for a rebuild but the front office seems to have a direction as to the type of player they are looking for and trying to rebuild with. Even if everything were to fall through (which I don't think it will), I can appreciate a well thought out plan. There's also still a fair amount of talent on the ML club. Things look to be progressing nicely imo.
  12. Should we be concerned about Corey Ray. I know it's a small sample but I wouldn't expect an advanced college bat to struggle like he has. Anybody seen him play or have any insight?
  13. Like this deal. The ptnl feels like a "dang we're out of time, how about you pick from this group later".
  14. Sheesh. I know everyone is entitled to their opinion but how can some of you say it's not enough in return. I hope your not the same group that was disappointed in no "headline" prospects in the Clev. deal. Prospect wise Brinson is pretty elite.
  15. I am REALLY hoping our deal is not with the Mets. Yeah the Mets keep popping in there. Makes me think the Brewers at least like some of their players enough. I think Herrera is being underrated a bit. If it was one of the Mets top 3, Herrera and a 20-30 organizational prospect I think that would be fair.
  16. Tick, tick , tick... My guess is the Red Sox swoop in at the last minute to end the nightmare.
  17. Agreed, plus it was for just Lucroy. It doesn't sound like Texas will do just Lucroy. Now, they have the talent to give equal value back but I'm guessing the Brewers at this stage might be inclined to settle on something less. I hope I'm wrong. I'm not all that high on Gallo either, however he has shown improvement with his k%.
  18. That is justified. I am kind of ticked about it myself. Maybe. Also, Lucroy could have said something different to get the deal as close as possible thinking it would give himself a bunch of leverage.
  19. I still think a deal gets done. The truth is nobody on here know what offers were there and what the supposed minimum requirement list included. For all we know one of the requirements was that he wanted potential future starting catcher in return or maybe at least 3 or 4 players. Seems too simplistic but you never know. Maybe the Red Sox or others get back involved with a new set of requirements that aren't necessarily worse than the first set. Maybe the interest in Norris is a fallback to allow them to get a controllable catcher back should they need to work with another team who can't offer a catcher.
  20. Hmm. I liked the supposed deal. Many here did not so I guess we'll see. I just don't see his value being any higher in the off season. All the teams are starting at square one. Who's going to give even one relevant prospect for one year of a guy who may or may not be helpful in a playoff run 150 games away? Sorry, I don't see it. Now is still the best time. Get what you can.
  21. Pleeeeeaaseee let it be McKenzie. DS, I have faith in you.
  22. Oh, the same professionals who hold star prospects back for a few weeks, months or days to maintain service time, skip pitcher starts based on some fictional innings threshold, knowingly ingest/inject banned substances to enhance performance, engage in bean ball wars, slide 4 feet away from a base to contact a fielder, steal private data from their old employer... Those professionals? I do get the argument to start him. I don't thinks it's catastrophic but I don't think it's unrealistic to sit your all-star catching trade chip or at the very least move him out of harms way a bit by playing him at first. I agree 100%. This is professional baseball. All are professionals from the grounds crew, to the umps, and to the front office. You act as a professional at this level. Not some kid playing fantasy baseball or some video game.
  23. I am also not thrilled Luc is in the lineup tonight. Even if it's a small risk, it isn't worth it.
  24. I wouldn't be disappointed in that deal. That's a fair amount of talent coming back. I'm going to kind of disagree with some others on DdA. In this scenario I think he's a good addition as a 4th piece. The others provide the upside and he is kind of the hedge so to speak. Yes, he only has a few years of control remaining. However, when healthy he's proven he's a good player who should just be coming into his prime. I think sometimes the team control gets overstated a bit. Many times it takes even high end prospects a couple years to figure things out. So you think it's Lucroy & Jeffress for Rosario, Smith, TDA & Cecchini?
