Green for Drabek Trade Idea
NievesNoNO replied to Hate those Rodents's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
I think that would be a fair deal. I think Toronto would turn it down but I don't think it's as clear cut as might seem. Green has progressed better through the minors while Drabek I guess has the better pedigree. Let me say I haven't ever seen Drabek pitch but his numbers in the minors look pretty underwhelming to me. Nothing about his numbers strikes me as 'top prospect'. I'd have a hard time moving Green for him if I'm the Brewers. -
Here's the link to the changes over at MLBtraderumors. Interesting stuff. I think I like the draft slotting rules. It was encouraging to read that a world draft is a real possibility in the near future. I don't like the extra draft pick lottery for the small market teams. I also really like the changes to the free agent compensation. No more type A/B; it doesn't matter the player or position. If you offer the player arbitration at the average of the top 125 players (about 12 million this year) and they sign somewhere else you're compensated. Overall, it's encouraging to see changes taking place behind the scenes to keep the game moving forward. It's nice to have the two sides negotiating on things that aren't just how to split up the big pile of money. Yes, in the end it's still about the bottom line but at least they're being creative and have more advanced thoughts on how to get there.

I agree RoCo, Greinke would easily get 100 mil in free agency this season. If they want to negotiate an extension it'll take CJ Wilson type money to keep him here. He may like it here, but he's not going to accept a low ball offer to do it. No, he's not an ace in the mold of CC or Lee but he's quite good and good doesn't come cheap. I trust Marcum more than most and it wouldn't surprise me to see him outperform Greinke over the next 3-4 years. I'd like one or the other. I think Marcum will come closer to what his actual worth is while Greinke obviously has the potential for the completely dominating year and might have fewer question marks, although that's debatable as well. Even if you believe they should trade one or both I don't see the urgency to do it during the off-season. I think you can leverage a teams desperation better at the trade deadline if the Brewers are out of contention. I'd much rather keep the rotation in tact again this season and give guys like Fiers and Peralta time to refine their craft and kind of ease them into the rotation and see IF they are the real deal before we decide they're the answer to filling out the rotation in the near future. To me, if you're really are looking to move somebody Randy Wolf is the guy.

Call me crazy, but I kind of like the one game playoff. The season goes late enough as is. To add another play-off series without decreasing the regular season schedule would be crazier than the one game playoff. I don't really like the idea of hard draft slotting and penalties for teams who spend more than a certain threshold. There are alot of uncertainties in the MLB draft that I really don't like. International free agents, signing international talent at age 16, and players being drafted and then opting out of the draft to go to college instead. If they really want to fix some of these issues, imo, they'd make EVERYONE submit their name to the draft so everyone knows who's available. I get that when teams sign the young international guys that more often than not they've invested time and money with development and what not through their own training academy. It makes absolutely no sense that because you play in the States that you must be drafted but if you live in the Dominican a team can pay a minimal amount of money to bring you in to their system. The biggest difference with the NFL and with MLB is that the NFL runs the entire league as ONE business, where as each MLB team is pretty much their own business.
-
I would negotiate with Greinke and Marcum THIS off-season like they are trying to bring them in as free agents. Either of those two are more important to this team than anyone they can bring in through free agency this year and most likely next season. We gave up a fair amount to get them so it would be nice to extend at least one. Use your exclusive negotiating rights for the next year to your advantage. Who knows if they all ready have their minds made up on testing free agency or not but now is the time to find out and make a legitimate offer and it sound as if they're doing that. Good to hear!
-
Agreed. Unfortunately, neither Greinke or Marcum are great. As they're getting lit up next year we can all remind ourselves they are getting money that could have gone to Prince. Or we could sign Prince and two years from now when both Greinke and Marcum leave because we didn't have the money to extend either we all can remind ourselves how much it sucks having Prince and no pitching. The jump from 77 to 96 wins certainly wasn't due to our massive increase in offensive production.

Reyes' UZR/150 of 5.7 and 11.6 also came when his legs/body were 4-5 years younger and as you said before injury, so to say that's his true talent level now is also misleading. Don't get me wrong I'd love Reyes for the next few years but paying 15-20 million to the guy at age 34-35 who already is having leg issues is risky. I doubt Barmes gets 4 years but I could be wrong.
-
If you believe that his defensive stats are a good indicator of his ability (I really haven't seen him play all that much) then I think that's a fair deal for a team that needs a shortstop. I'm kind of in the mindset that trying to replace Fielder's bat is a no win situation and they should focus rather on defense to try and negate the loss. Get a good defensive SS and 3B and trust that Braun, Weeks, Hart, and Gamel will do enough offensively. To me there seems like there's more risk in shelling out big bucks to try and get offense than there would be to get solid defense.
-
Whoa I think you would be really overpaying with that package. I doubt it would take more than just McGehee and a middling prospect. They are practically going to be giving him away. That being said I will would rather have McGehee and hope for a bounceback year. Yeah, I'm not really all that high on Figgins bouncing back, I thought it might be worth it IF they'd included Brendan Ryan to solve our SS issue. I suppose they could just pay Furcal the same amount of money it would cost to have Figgins on the team.
-
Pat I don't disagree with you but I think it would take a lot of work to get things to even out. Just slapping a hard cap in place isn't going to work (not that I'm implying that's what you're suggesting). MLB would likely have to take control of all teams TV deals. Players are simply not just going to agree to a cap unless there's a floor in place. My question is what would that number be, 60 mil, 80, mil, 100 mill ? The NFL has the luxury of being able to sell out just about every game, but no matter how you work the system inevitably there will be bad teams that are out of contention by Aug/Sept. Those games will not be filled up. So as an example, the Brewer fans that fill up Miller Park this year in essence would be helping other teams who are only drawing 10-15,000 a game instead of knowing their money at least has the opportunity to be reinvested into the team. I'm not saying it's not possible or wouldn't work just that there's a lot to consider.
-
Yuni's two step range at SS is unacceptable to me. He hits OK but not enough to make up for his weak OBP and horrid range. Reyes price will be steeper than what the Brewers should be willing to pay and the same for Rollins. I also don't really want Furcal unless he's coming cheap as he's as much of an injury risk as Reyes is. MLB shortstops are alot like NFL running backs. They have a shorter shelf-life and when they lose their legs their not very useful anymore. I'd like Barmes, Gonzalez, and Santiago over the cost of bringing in Reyes, Rollins, or Furcal.
-
I've brought his name up before. I like the idea, but I think you'll find you won't get many takers on this one. Maybe they could work something out where we take on all Figgins salary and they include Ryan. McGehee, Morgan, and Narveson for Figgins and Ryan? Maybe Figgins is one of those guys that's just gonna sit on his payday and not care, but I'd be willing to give him a fresh start and hope he can turn it around. I'd love the Figgins of a few years back in the two hole playing good D at 3rd.
-
Great to hear a deal is almost complete! I've changed my tone on the whole salary cap debate over the years. I don't think there's a question on weather or not the large market teams start off with a bigger advantage, they do. However, I don't think the NFL model (salary cap) model will work. To institute a cap, you'll most likely need to institute a floor meaning if a team can't lure the best free agent they'll be forced to over spend money on their own crappy talent or mid-level free agents. Many of the smaller clubs can't afford an NFL style salary floor as the revenue streams aren't the same. I actually don't mind the structure as it is. It could use some tweaks, maybe with a revamped FA compensation and world draft but all in all the system works OK. The teams just need talent in the front office and owners who are willing to reinvest some money. Easier said than done I guess.

reyes a "almost a done deal" with marlins
NievesNoNO replied to prophet's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
Agreed. I doubt it's a done deal or it would be 'done' already. They may end up with Reyes but it won't be before he checks in with all the suitors unless they've completely put up a ridiculous over-market amount of money. -

Are the Brewers one Year from Rebuilding?
NievesNoNO replied to jakesdaddio's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
I don't think there will be a Marlinesque type sell-off/rebuild. I think it really depends on what happens with Greinke and Marcum this year. If both end up leaving then I think you consider a couple year retool. I agree with Bucks that they need to in most cases get a return on our star players before they leave; the draft picks aren't enough to compensate on a consistent basis. The thing is, they are a very good team right now and have very good players with which to work with if they wanted to start selling off some parts. I think what many of us would do and what the Brewers might do will be much different. IF Greinke and Marcum leave I'd look to move Hart, Weeks, and maybe Gallardo depending on how our young pitchers were developing. I don't see the Brewers basically throwing away a year at the MLB level though with how many fans have been showing up and from a business perspective I couldn't argue. It will definitely be a fun and interesting year to see how everything plays out. -
Jim Breen's Ideal Offseason
NievesNoNO replied to cvollbrecht's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
Agreed. Even if the Marlins were looking to move him I have to think they could get more than Narveson. Narveson has maxed out his ability and is a fine 4-5th starter but Morrison is a future All-Star. I gotta believe any potential deal that has Morrison coming to Milwaukee would have Peralta leaving -
Braves Open To Trading Jurrjens, Prado
NievesNoNO replied to cvollbrecht's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
You might be right or it's possible they think they can get more for Jurrjens than Hudson. I'm not all that high on Jurrjens, but I'd like him better than Wolf and Narveson. If Hart was a free agent this year he'd easily be the best OF option. Right now Hart is more of a sure thing than Jurrjens based on the last two seasons. I'll stand by that Hart for Jurrjens is as fair as it gets for both sides. Now, whether it's a good move for each side I'm not sure. If your into taking some chances you could, as was suggested, trade Hart for Jurrjens and make a run at Sizemore to play right field. -
Braves Open To Trading Jurrjens, Prado
NievesNoNO replied to cvollbrecht's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
I think this is what it boils down to mostly. I'd say Jurrjens for Hart straight up is about as even a trade is you're going to get. I think some of you are undervaluing Hart a bit. Hart's offensive numbers (OPS) over the last two seasons would put him in the top 10-15 range for outfielders. That's pretty solid. If the Brewers put him on the market there would be no shortage of interest. I also like Prado quite a bit and would be a good option at 3B and give us some nice flexibility if needed. If they're really looking to acquire a proven power outfield bat Hart is probably as good as they're going to get. If they're looking for prospects then we don't match. I don't think they would deal Jurrjens and Prado together. -
Pretty much every team will live and die with pitching.. unless your the '95 Indians or something and even then their lack of pitching got them in the end. And I agree, you can't give up the potential of Peralta for 1-2 years of Wright. I have to think IF the Mets were to deal Wright that Nate has got close to what it would take. I like what the Brewers did last year to acquire pitching even if it was for some of our best prospects because I think they have the potential to extend at least one, but they cannot continue to gut the farm system for expensive talent.

I don't know, I wish I could say I care about the NBA. I've tried and the product is just not there for me. The good news is the NBA has the best athletes of the major sports, imo. So the foundation is there if they just let the game sell itself and bring it back to what it should be I think they'd be a lot better off. 1. Stop allowing the players to run the league. Coaches and owners need to take back authority. 2. Let the players and game decide who the stars are going to be, stop trying to shove who you'd like to market as your next poster child of the NBA down everyone's throat and bending the rules for "your stars". The NBA has lost its integrity in my mind, real or imagined it doesn't matter. The perception is still there. The hidden draft lottery, sketchy officiating, and clearly seeing the players trying harder at the end of the game and in the play-offs are not helping that image. It's just way too predictable. Within the first 3 minutes I'm guaranteed to see a clear-out to a team's "best player", a four step travel, a ticky tack foul sending a star to the line, and a complete mugging of the 10th best player on the floor resulting in an uncontested dunk as the other 9 players stand and watch. Exciting!!

Not including Reyes I'd like Barmes and Gonzalez as free agents. I want nothing to do with Furcal. I like Brendan Ryan in a trade. I also think Jason Donald would be an interesting guy if they wanted to be a bit unconventional For beyond 2012, the Orioles seem to actually have a surplus of shortstops although they could easily move guys around. With Hardy signed to an extension and Manny Machado not far behind I'd take a look at seeing if they could get Jon Schoop or Mychal Givens out of their system for 2013 and beyond.

Brewers have serious interest in Jose Reyes?
NievesNoNO replied to BillyRed's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
I somewhat agree. I think a lot of the hype surrounding him comes from fantasy baseball circles a few years back when he was stealing 60-70 bases. He's still definitely a dynamic player though and young enough. He is starting to approach that age though that I'd get concerned about too long of a contract. He plays a very demanding position and relies heavily on his legs for a lot of his value and has had the well documented hamstring issues. The thing that keeps me more optimistic about Reyes as maybe compared to a guy like Rollins is at least when Reyes does play he's still very good and at least appears to have all his skill set left. I'd be OK with fours years and maybe a team option for a 5th year at what ever the going price is. If teams are going 6-7 years for him I don't see how that will end well. I'm wondering if Carl Crawford's performance this last year will keep teams a little leery of handing over big money with years to Reyes who besides position has a pretty similar skill set. -
What is Marcum's trade value?
NievesNoNO replied to paul253's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
I don't see any teams willing to part with a their top pitching prospects for a one year rental of Marcum. I'd think his value would be highest at the trade deadline if they really wanted to move him. I'd actually like to see him extended. If they think they're contenders next season (which I beleive they still will be) they need to hold on to Marcum. If you are really looking to move a pitcher I'd really push Wolf on the market. Keeping them both however wouldn't be bad as it will give Peralta and/or Fiers time to prove they can pitch at the major league level. I'd hate to start selling off pitching before we actually know whether or not we have replacements.
