  1. Jon Heyman had this Tweet about the Yankees inquiring about Cliff Lee from the Indians and were told that they need to trade Phil Hughes or Joba Chamberlain plus more to get Lee. Link to Jon Heyman's tweet.
  2. The Red Sox DFA'd Mark Kotsay today. I wonder if Melvin would look at picking up Kotsay to improve the bench since Gerut really isn't seeing much playing time. Link to article on Kotsay being DFA'd.
  3. I'm not buying the luck thing anymore it has been to long for luck to be having this much of an effect on Hardy's lines. I believe his LD%/GB%/FB% show more what really is the problem with Hardy than BABIP does. Hardy's LD%/GB%/FB% http://www.fangraphs.com/graphs/3797_SS_season_full_9_20090723.png Hardy is just not hitting the ball that hard right now and that is evident in his decrease in LD% and the increase in FB%.
  4. The Cardinals are going to be competing with the Yankees and the Mets for Holliday in the offseason. As has been stated before Holliday would like to play for the Yankees. The Yankees will have Matsui and Damon becoming free agents and it looks as though the Yankees don't really want to keep Damon I'm not sure on Matsui though. That leaves a spot open in the OF and a DH spot if the Yankees don't resign both Damon and Matsui. Damon is probably gone and Holliday would be the perfect replacement for them. Then you have the Mets who need another OF I don't believe they will be happy with Francouer taking one of their corner outfield spots everyday plus they have the aging Delgado who maybe done that leaves a big hole for them to fill. The price for Holliday maybe out of reach for the Cardinals next year. Thats why I don't see this as a good trade for the Cardinals especially how much talent they gave away to get Holliday.
  5. This is why the Indians won't move Lee unless they are blown away by an offer. The Indians even without Martinez next year would be competitive especially if they trade Martinez who is basically a DH or 1B with the Indians for a player like Salome you really don't lose much and if you can get a pitcher or two one near ready and one a little ways away you take it. But when you are trading away a starting pitcher like Lee who you control and rather cheaply you want to get back what you have traded plus more. Parra, Gamel/Escobar, Lucroy/Green, and Peralta/Scarpetta/Ordorizzi is what it would probably take to get Lee from the Indians. That is somewhat close to what the Rangers got for trading Teixeira away. Now Martinez on the other hand would only take someone like Salome who could take over for Martinez right now as the DH or backup catcher along with someone like Dillard or Cody who could step in and be a starter right now or next year along with an A ball pitcher would get that deal done. Martinez would be a nice bridge for Lucroy though but I'm not sure how Martinez would hold up playing catcher for the whole year though.
  6. Average wise Wallace will be the better hitter, slugging wise I will go with LaPorta, and OPS wise I will go with Gamel. Overall they are about all equal in talent with each being a different kind of a player.
  7. Hardy broken down monthly By Day/Month AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB HBP SO SB CS AVG OBP SLG OPS Last 7 Days 22 1 3 0 0 1 2 0 0 5 0 1 .136 .136 .273 .409 April 77 5 12 1 0 3 7 7 0 19 0 0 .156 .224 .286 .510 May 80 16 25 6 1 2 17 11 2 9 0 0 .313 .400 .488 .888 June 101 16 23 2 0 3 8 10 0 22 0 0 .228 .295 .337 .632 July 66 6 14 1 1 3 11 2 0 16 0 1 .212 .232 .394 .626 This is no longer a slump or bad luck. Especially when you see that Hardy is just not driving the ball anymore. Hardy's LD% has decreased so far this year and his FB% has increased but his GB% has also decreased so far this year. http://www.fangraphs.com/graphs/3797_SS_season_full_9_20090723.png This just is not a slump anymore nor is it bad luck anymore. There is something wrong here with Hardy maybe this is Bill Hall version 2.0 or this maybe just below what Hardy's real talent is which is a .250/.320/.400 type of a player.
  8. But this isn't like an every other slump. Most slumps last a few weeks this has been going on for awhile now. It has been exactly two months since Hardy has had a good month overall. Hardy's stats broken down by month so far this year. By Day/Month AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB HBP SO SB CS AVG OBP SLG OPS Last 7 Days 22 1 3 0 0 1 2 0 0 5 0 1 .136 .136 .273 .409 April 77 5 12 1 0 3 7 7 0 19 0 0 .156 .224 .286 .510 May 80 16 25 6 1 2 17 11 2 9 0 0 .313 .400 .488 .888 June 101 16 23 2 0 3 8 10 0 22 0 0 .228 .295 .337 .632 July 66 6 14 1 1 3 11 2 0 16 0 1 .212 .232 .394 .626 Hardy's best month was May and every other month after and before that was and is below average. Hardy hasn't looked like he has made any adjustments at the plate and his power numbers are looking rather bleak. He has a total of 3 doubles since May and his walk rate is declining while his strike out rate is rising. If this was Hall or Weeks you would be hearing screams of benching those two or to DFA them. Hardy has been the worst everyday player for the Brewers for the past two months. Hall is nearly producing as much as Hardy is right now and Kendall is out performing Hardy by a wide margin. This is not your ordinary slump there is definitely something wrong here and I just don't trust Hardy at all anymore with the bat. If it wasn't for Hardy's defense picking up his game offensively he would be the worst everyday starter on the team right now.
  9. Already being discussed here.
  10. The Indians want starting pitching and MLB ready in return along with 2 top tier prospects for Lee. That would be Parra (starting pitcher who is MLB ready) Escobar/Gamel, Lucroy/Green, and Scarpetta/Peralta/Ordorizzi. The Indians don't have to trade Lee at all this year especially with the very cheap option for next year on Lee. It will take the moon and the stars to get Lee from the Indians. The Indians are though looking to trade Martinez. Martinez would come cheaper but not that much. Basically with Lee it is blow the Indians away with an offer or don't even start talking about a trade. Martinez could probably be had for Salome/Lucroy/Green and Scarpetta/Ordorizzi. Martinez is more likely than Lee because of the Indians asking price. It would take that much to get Lee because the Indians don't really want to trade Lee unless they get something they absolutely can't refuse which would be a Teixeira type of a deal.
  11. I'm more concerned with Hardy's offense than his defense his defense will be fine but when you are paying a player $8m plus he better be playing really good offensively especially when you have or had someone who can do almost exactly the same at a lower rate. I just don't want to be paying for another Hall with good defense while the offense is lacking and Hardy is going to get a bump in pay in arbitration after this year. I would rather see Escobar next year who will cost about 1/4 of what Hardy will cost and it will be near the same amount of production. Plus Escobar + pitching from Hardy trade > Hardy and Halladay in the long run. Short-term this is good but long-term I will take Escobar and what the Brewers can get for Hardy in a trade.
  12. The Indians want a haul for Lee and if you add in Martinez you get even more of a haul. The Indians want what the Jays want for Halladay.
  13. That would be the starting point and I don't think you would like the ending point of it though. Gamel/Escobar, Parra, Lucroy, and Peralta/Scarpetta/Ordorizzi would be what the Indians are looking for Lee. Now add in Martinez and it would look something like this: Gamel, Escobar, Parra, Lucroy, Peralta, Gindl, and Scarpetta/Ordorizzi/Anundsen. Way to much to give up for just two players and 1 1/2 years of those two players.
  14. But what if Hardy falls off like Hall did then what? You are paying Hardy about twice as much as Hall is currently making and that would put the Brewers in a financial bind. I'm just not sold on Hardy right now and the amount it would take to lock him up long term. I'll take my chances with Escobar over an aging free agent that is going to cost more and you may not even get the same production out of the FA. I believe the trade market will be better in the off season or there are cheaper options with a longer contract that the Brewers can get right now. Hardy to the Twins for some pitching maybe a better deal than trading a lot of young talent for 1.5 years of Halladay.
  15. Wallace has only been in the Cardinals system for one year and is already in AAA. He will only be 23 yrs old after this season so he has a lot of time yet before he reaches his peak. Wallace is in the same tier as Gamel in terms of being a prospect. Wallace also has a very nice OPS of 769 and had an OPS of 840 in AA this year it is safe to assume that Wallace will develop some power more power and his slugging will increase. Barton is a year older than Wallace also.
  16. No thanks I would rather roll the dice on Ian Snell than on Duchscherer.
  17. Actually there is a Melvin connection here but the rumored trade was never going to go down. If I remember correctly before Buerhle signed the extension with the White Sox it was rumored that he was going to be traded to Milwaukee at least that was the rumored destination of where Buerhle was going to be traded to. So there is a Melvin connection but it is faint and was not really a possibility.
  18. Not really correct at all. The philosophy of DM and Jack Z was that of take the best available player who could be signed. It wasn't take a hitter because Melvin said so it was take the best available player that the scouts had pointed out and then look at which of those available players would be signable and then pick that player. I doubt it came down to we need pitchers lets draft pitchers or we should get hitters so lets draft hitters. I don't see DM as undvalueing pitching and defense. Hardy was more known for his glove than his bat and they drafted him there are more like Hardy you are just looking to find them to further your agenda open your eyes and ears.
  19. Not really since there are only a few teams really looking for infielders to plug some gaps that are contending right now. The Twins and the Red Sox are the only American league teams that I can think of right now looking for infield help. In the NL it is the Giants but the Giants need a lot of offensive help. I believe Hardy maybe yet traded to the Twins this year. Article on the Twins looking for infield help you have to scroll down a bit about half way through the article. If the Brewers could send Hardy to the Twins for Kevin Mulvey and another prospect. I am not familiar with the Twins minor league system but maybe something like that? Or the Brewers could get Liriano plus some other prospects. Liriano hasn't looked good at all this year and might have more arm problems maybe or he is just not 100% healthy yet and would be better next year than he is this year. I like the trade proposed originally proposed but the Braves would need something more if they are giving up Medlen also.
  20. It would be Brett Wallace for Matt Holliday which would be overpaying by the Cardinals. The Cardinals trading Wallace would be like the Brewers trading Gamel for Holliday. Even though I think Holliday would be a great addition to the Brewers that would be way over paying for a half a year of Holliday especially when he is going to be signing with the Yankees next year. The Yankees will be without Damon and Matsui possibly next year that leaves a spot open for one more corner OF possibly two spots depending on what the Yankees do with Swisher. If the Cardinals do trade Wallace for Holliday I will be happy because Wallace would help the Cardinals out in the next couple of years more so than Holliday. Wallace maybe the guy that could help Pujols out and would solve some of their offensive woes. This also doesn't really make sense for the Cardinals with Rasmus, Ankiel, and Ludwick already in the OF. Maybe Holliday replaces Ludwick or Ankiel in the OF but that also makes DeRosa a lot less valuable since he would only be able to play 3B or 2B then. That OF is crowded in St. Louis and it will only get more crowded with Holliday there.
  21. The only time I believe Hall was brought up in trade talks was last off season or the beginning of the season last year along with Capuano. I believe the trade was Hall and Capuano for Rolen and something else I can't remember if that was true or not. If the Brewers would have pulled off that trade it would have been very interesting to say the least. Of course Cappy was injured and Hall was somewhat ineffective last year his splits against lefties was rather good last year and there was a perfect platoon with Hall and Branyan last year. Also didn't Hardy get injured in 2006 where he hurt his ankle. I believe that had to be in the back of Melvin's head also what if Hardy didn't fully recover from that injury and you just traded your only other MLB SS on your roster then what? It is easy to say right now what Melvin should or shouldn't have done but since there isn't a time machine where you can go into the future or back in time you can't really fault Melvin for signing Hall to that deal which really isn't a bad deal that everyone makes it out to be. It was definitely a below market contract when it was done and the Brewers are only on the hook for one more year with Hall and then a buyout of 500k in '11. That is nowhere near as bad as some of the other contracts like Wells, Matthews Jr., and the deal the Dodgers gave Jones and Pierre.
  22. I can see why for Macha but why Melvin?
  23. The NL Central is not the weakest division in the NL or in MLB it is probably one of the strongest behind the AL East. I would rank the strength of divisions like this AL East, NL Central, AL West, NL West, AL Central, NL East. The NL East has definitely been the weakest division this year they are like the NL West of last year. This is all in terms of competition and not looking at the talent levels though. The NL Central is the strongest division in the NL. With 4 teams in the race for the division plus all of them also in the race for the wild card I don't see that as a weak division only two teams you could consider weak in the NL Central with one being a moderately good team in the Reds. I don't see why Melvin should be fired. He made a mistake with Suppan sure but that could also be contributed to Mark A. also wanting a big free agent signing. As much as everyone praises Jack Z on his picks he sure did miss a lot with his pitching picks though. He did a great job with the positional player picks but not so great with the pitching picks. No one is perfect though so looking at Melvin and Jack Z both have their warts and I believe both are equaly talented as GM's and neither one would be a huge upgrade over each other.
  24. I don't think Wolf wanted to leave the west coast like Johnson. The Brewers would have had to over pay for him that 1yr 5 mil would have been more like 2 yr 12-15 mil.
  25. Is that suppose to be in blue?
