  1. You remembered wrong. Branyan wanted playing time which the Brewers were not able to guarantee to Branyan and would have had to overpay for him about $3m would be around the target range for that. Kapler is more of a weird thing I'm not sure Kapler even wanted to come back and play for the Brewers. There wasn't any talks between both sides so I doubt Kapler really wanted to come back to Milwaukee another one Melvin would have over paid for. If Melvin takes both back and they only cost about $8m that leaves Looper or Hoffman to sign and since the Brewers really needed a starting pitcher that means no Hoffman.
  2. No we couldn't have kept Branyan pretty easily at all. Branyan wanted playing time and the Brewers couldn't guarantee him that. I believe Branyan's 3B playing time is long gone and he is a 1B now and for the rest of his career. Branyan just is not an everyday 3B anymore and with Gamel in the wings the Brewers didn't want to have Branyan taking that spot over Gamel. Plus the Brewers would have had to overpay for Branyan which would may have resulted in the Brewers not getting Hoffman. Now you have problems with your bullpen and starting rotation because the Brewers probably don't pick up Looper either if they bring back both Kapler and Branyan. Overpaying for both because of playing time issues. Now you have Burns/Dillard/ or whoever starting instead of Looper. It is easy to say Melvin should of had resigned those two and then be done with it. You need to look at what else would have happened because of resigning those two.
  3. You are severally putting down Cameron's value and his contract is not bad at all for what he is really worth. Cameron is actually worth his contract and that contract is not that much and isn't very expensive at all. I still believe a Cameron to the Yankees is a possible trade or Cameron to the Braves yes I know they have Mclouth in CF but the Braves are looking for a RH platoon to play RF and Cameron could play RF/LF or Mclouth could be moved to RF/LF. The Brewers could get Swisher for Cameron. The Brewers could also send Hart to the Braves for someone like Medlen. I believe Hardy gets traded also probably to the Twins but I would really love to trade Hardy to the Angels for O'Sullivan but that is a pipe dream. Hoffman could also be traded to the Angels and that would be an easy sell for Hoffman to go there. Looper is unlikely to be traded I don't know many teams that are looking for a #4 or #5 pitcher. Hall could also be traded but the Brewers would probably have to eat some of his contract. I really believe Hardy is going to be traded either for Washburn and Morrow or to the Twins for a pitching prospect maybe even Liriano for Hardy straight up deal or even to the Rays for Kazmir straight up. Hardy would be a cheap option for the Rays for the rest of this year and next year at SS and he would be a type A Free Agent for the Rays but the Twins are more likely to trade for Hardy than the Rays though. Hardy just seems like a player the Twins would want and who would help them this year and next year. Liriano also helps the Brewers and it would be selling low on both of the players.
  4. Harang would be nice to get but the price would be concerning with the Reds. Harang is due $12.5m in 2010 with an option for 2011 at $14m that becomes mutual with a $2.5m buyout. I'm not sure what the Reds would be looking for in return and it all depends on wether the Reds are looking for MLB ready pitching which the Brewers don't have or positional players that the Brewers do have. Escobar and Gamel are probably out of the question. Without knowing the Reds farm system I'm not sure what they are looking for. I'm guessing they are looking for a MLB ready SS and 3B. The OF looks a little bleak after Bruce. If the Brewers could get Harang without giving up Gamel, Lawrie, Escobar, or Braddock I would be fine with that but that contract is a lot to take on for the Brewers.
  5. I would rather Weeks wait until May before coming back this time and start out in the minors until mid May or until he is completely ready to come back. McGehee, Heether, or Iribarren could play 2B until Weeks is healthy.
  6. Except this isn't just one hot prospect it is nearly the whole farm that will be needed to be traded to get Halladay. I remember the Expos raping their farm system for a player and they have never been the same since. Giving up one or two good prospects I'm OK with but giving up 3-4 good prospects no. That is gambling way to much on the future.
  7. I also don't understand why people want to move Rickie to the OF. Rickie at times has trouble judging grounders at 2B now imagine Rickie having troubles judging line drives in CF. Instead of at worst there being a double on a misjudged grounder at 2B that double now turns into a triple or an inside the park home run. I just can't see Weeks being good in CF I would rather see Hall in CF again before Weeks is ever put out there.
  8. Hardy and Hart/Salome for Kazmir and Desmond Jennings.
  9. I believe LaPorta will have a career similar to Sexson or Burnitz I'm leaning more towards a career like Burnitz than Sexson though. LaPorta is a big bat and his value is in his slugging. The original poster is trying to compare three different kind of players and seeing who will have the better MLB career. Well that depends on what you see as a better career both Burnitz and Sexson were good MLB players for a time and then their careers tailed off. Gamel is the more complete player of the three but Gamel probably won't hit for a high average like Wallace will (my opinion) or have a high slugging percentage like LaPorta will. Gamel will have a higher OPS than LaPorta and Wallace and will probably have a OBP close to what Wallace will have and a slugging percentage just below LaPorta. Defensively Gamel will probably be better than both LaPorta and Wallace both will probably be DH's for their clubs. All three are different players and it really depends on what you value. Do you value a high OPS player in Gamel? or do you value a high average guy in Wallace? or do you want the slugger in LaPorta? All three of the players have value and all three will be good MLB players.
  10. Hoffman to the Angels maybe a good move. I'm not sure what the Brewers would get in return for Hoffman but the Angels are looking for a setup guy which Hoffman would fit perfectly into that role. Maybe a Hoffman for O'Sullivan/Reckling/Walden. Walden and O'Sullivan are probably to much to give up for a half a year of Hoffman but if the Brewers could swing another minor prospect to the Angels that could be a trade that helps the Brewers out for the next couple of years. I wouldn't mind a rotation of Gallardo, pitcher from Hardy trade, Bush, O'Sullivan, Parra/Suppan. Even if Hardy doesn't get traded a rotation of Gallardo, Bush, O'Sullivan, Parra, and Suppan wouldn't be that bad it would definitely be an improvement over what the Brewers have now. O'Sullivan's stats so far this year. SEASON TEAM G GS CG SHO IP H R ER HR BB SO W L SV HLD BLSV ERA 2009 LAA 5 5 0 0 29.0 32 12 12 4 8 16 3 0 0 0 -- 3.72 I wish the Angels were not so locked up at SS with Aybar because a Hardy for O'Sullivan trade would make a lot of sense for both the Brewers and the Angels. If the Angels didn't have so may good infielders with Aybar, Figgins, and Kendrick not so much Kendrick though this trade would still make sense but that infield is really crowded. For the Brewers to get someone like O'Sullivan though it would have to be a Hoffman plus a prospect to get O'Sullivan I believe. I believe Ortega would probably be a more realistic option and I'm not sure that would be worth it for the Brewers.
  11. That trade is less than what the Jays want Kyle Drabek, J.A. Happ and Dominic Brown is the kind of players they want. I would say it would be something like this Parra, Scarpetta/Ordorizzi/Peralta, Escobar, and Lawrie would be close to what the Jays want. But the Brewers would still have to add some more pieces to that deal maybe someone like Gindl or Gamel.
  12. Apparently Burns is going back down and Dillard will be coming up to pitch on Tuesday. Link
  13. Because the rotation would still consist of a #6 starter in Burns or McClung. If Parra is gone and Bush can not come back then the Brewers would be in big trouble with Burns or McClung in the rotation and that is why Halladay wouldn't really increase the chances of the Brewers making the playoffs. This isn't a Sabathia deal where we had Sheets in the rotation already and there was only one hole in the rotation. There is one right now and if Parra is in the deal and Bush can't make it back you have two holes you have to fix. You would have a rotation of Halladay, Gallardo, Looper, Suppan, and Bush/McClung/Cody/Dillard. Halladay is not going to increase anything. It will be like putting a band aid on a shotgun wound. If the Royals added Halladay to their team they are no more of a playoff contender than they were before the same can be even said about the Red Sox adding Halladay or the Yankees adding Halladay. If you are a playoff contender before you will be a playoff contender after the trade and if you were not a playoff contender before the trade you are probably more than likely not a playoff contender after the trade. If CC would have resigned with the Brewers I'm not sure if we would be a contender since there would be no Hoffman and probably no Cameron also. So I'm not sure we would be more of a playoff contender with him. You are either a playoff contender or you are not. There is no super playoff contender it is just playoff contender or not you can't go up any higher or lower than that.
  14. No and the Brewers are not going to be able to trade either Hall, Suppan, or Kendall unless the Brewers can find someone like the Cardinals to take our Lugo's.
  15. If I was selling it would be Hardy, Cameron, and Hoffman. All three have value and there could be a couple of teams out there that could use Hardy and Cameron. Maybe even Hart could be traded to a team. Hardy to the Twins for a couple of pitching prospects could be a good deal even a Hardy for Liriano plus a prospect or two. Hart or Cameron to the Braves for Morlan or another pitching prospect could be a good trade. Cameron to the Yankees for Swisher could be something to look at also. Hart to the Tigers for? Hoffman to the Rangers for?
  16. How many LH pitchers the Jays have is irrelevant. If they want a starting pitcher that is what they are looking for and if you don't offer it they will just say no thanks until they get a deal they want. Parra should be valued highly because he is a good pitcher and should be a good #2 or #3 pitcher. Don't let Parra's current year cloud your judgement on Parras actual talent.
  17. Parra is better than Burns, Cody, and Dillard. Those are the pitchers who would be replacing Parra in the rotation. End Toronto's GM has said publicly that he is looking for pitching in return of Halladay. So yes Parra would probably have to be in the deal I don't see any other pitcher in the Brewers organization who would fit other than low A ball players who are just as good as Parra but just are not ready.
  18. Last season he averaged 17.05 P/IP and this year so far he is averaging 17.41 P/IP his walk rate has also increased from last year 3.5 BB/9 in 08 and 4.23 BB/9 in 09. Along with his walks increasing this year his K/9 has decreased.
  19. You can't trade all of your best prospects and expect to be competitive in the future. If you trade Parra you have Burns or McClung in the rotation again how does that help the Brewers make the playoffs? If Bush doesn't come back this year who do you replace him with? If Bush doesn't come back and you trade Parra away for Halladay you have a rotation of:Gallardo, Halladay, Looper, Suppan, and Burns/McClung/Dillard/Cody. The Brewers will still have two number fives and a number six pitcher in the rotation. I'm sorry but you just can not win like that. The rotation doesn't get any better by just adding Halladay into it. The same problems that were there before will still be there and you just made your farm system worse for a lateral movement.
  20. But they have the same problem. I'm not comparing talent here I'm comparing their problems and they share a common problem which is high pitch counts per inning.
  21. Joba isn't a starting pitcher I don't care what the Yankees say. He should be a reliever he has almost the same problem that McClung has when pitching. The amount of pitches per inning for Chamberlain needs to come down but I believe Chamberlain would be best used coming out of the bullpen as a closer or a setup man especially for the Yankees.
  22. And what if Halladay says no I don't want to come to Milwaukee and kills the trade then what? Halladay can choose if he wants to come here or not. Plus adding Halladay is not going to make this team more of a playoff contender this year or next year. The Brewers are still going to have Suppan and Looper in the rotation and if you trade Parra and Bush is not able to come back Burns stays in the rotation or McClung returns back to the rotation. There will still be holes in the rotation this is not like it was last year where the Brewers were just missing one spot in the rotation. The Brewers are missing two spots in the rotation and if you trade Parra for Halladay you just made a lateral move at best.
  23. And then when Halladay leaves after next year or demands to be traded before the season starts it will take the Brewers longer to get the talent back that they just traded away. This would cause the 20+ years of no playoffs again and you are back where you started but this time you are even worse off.
  24. And if the Brewers don't make the playoffs this year and Hardy continues to slide and Halladay gets injured then what? You just gave up some cheap prospects that could have filled holes by trades or in the lineup. There is no guarantee that the Brewers would make the playoffs if they get Halladay. I don't believe the Brewers chances change much if they get Halladay or not. You can't do a blockbuster trade year after year if you are a team like the Brewers. You do it when you can like last year for Sabathia but you don't do it for a second year in a row. The Brewers just do not have the financial means to do it every year to replace prospects that they lose with free agents. If Melvin did this trade it probably would be another 20+ years before we would see the playoffs again after Halladay is gone.
