  1. The situation was similarly gloomy in '82 against the Angels in the ALCS after the first two games, but the Brewers turned it around and won the series. My dad took me to one of the County Stadium games. I will never forget that crowd. That series was magic and you could taste the electric happiness. The team was special, too, but not just because of the talent. Personality wise, I see similarities between the '82 and '08 teams.
  2. Sheets is one of the best pitchers, over a career with the team, that the Brewers have had. It took guts to start the game, and it took class not to lash out at morons that booed him. Obviously, I am a Sheets fan. Still, I will be glad to see him go....I just hope it is out of the division.
  3. I hate the Cubs, and I hate the result of the game, but the 9th inning meltdown and extra inning loss against the Cubs was, as Yogi Berra would say, a real cliffdweller!
  4. Sveum is doing a good job with the staff. That was the biggest beef I had with Yost, particularly his bullheaded over-dependence on his "eighth inning guy" or "experienced veterans." (Eg., leaving Shouse in to pitch to Burell!?! Yikes.)
  5. Like him, but: long swing that cannot drive low and away slider or turn on inside fastball. Solution: Walk more, steal more, get more hittable pitches.
  6. Good guy. And here is his chance for a slice of MIlwaukee folk hero immortality.
  7. Whatta jigsaw puzzle. I would like to see Roberts at second because he helps the problem with the leadoff spot. How bout Weeks at third? Don't laugh: his biggest problem is turning the DP. At the plate, he has unfulfilled power potential. Put him there, put Roberts at second or bring up Escobar to play SS or second. And unless Escobar is truly dy-no-mite in the field, leave Hardy alone. Third or fourth best offensive shortstop in the NL who is wayyy underrated in the field. He has soft hands, average range, and a great arm. Also, I betcha Billy hits better after he gets his eyes fixed. Enough about Branyan; he's a bench player who hurts the team if he has more than 20 starts.
  8. I don't think anyone predicted that he would be this good (we couldn't have even hoped). People were saying that he would be an improvement which would have a trickle down effect on the rest of the staff.
  9. Yep, he has gained weight. Also, teams are pitching him differently than last year by staying off the plate. As good a hitter as Corey is, most teams would rather get beat by a Hart single rather than a Fielder dinger.
  10. Whatta bout the pop and beer that the slobs (like me) and their kids who spill all over the place? And the general garbage wrappers and cups? C'mon people, itsa ballpark! You are okay Nick - as long as your aren't spitting the seeds on someone else.......
  11. He's been good in the field, but those three errors were biggies. He's also been as good as could be expected at the plate. I am fine with him returning - unless we can find a lefty, leadoff batting, contact-hitting speedster with a gold glove to replace him. (and 2B is more difficult than CF).
  12. Thanks. Loved the Saber article and footage! Seems like all he has to do is pitch and get experience. Gonna be a good one!
  13. Let Cameron go, move Weeks to center, Hardy to second, Escobar starts at short. Spend the savings on pitching.
  14. How is he throwing? I know he has a very good fastball, but are his offspeed pitches improving? What about control?
  15. Last night, Billy and BA commented that Torres did not pitch the tenth because of an injury. What is the story on this?
  16. Mench reincarnated.
  17. Davego; No way Bush is a closer. From our own system, I'm wondering whether Jeffress or Pena can develop into quality bullpen arms.
  18. I think Gwynn will get the call if Braun is DL'd, but I'd like to see what Nelson can do.
  19. If the Tom H. newspaper account is correct, then I have little problem with Prince shoving Manny. Under the circumstances in the article, Manny was being a baby and wanted to bug out on the team, which is a very weenie move (think Barry Bonds). Prince is the team leader, albeit a hot-head, so he basically enforced the law: you are part of the team, so sit down and be part of the team. If nothing else was accomplished, nobody else will be leaving the dugout early. Also, if this was a football team, people would be saying what a good leader Prince is and how he keeps the team together. This kind of stuff really does happen all the time. In this case, I think it shows that they are upset that they are losing. Think back to the late '90s for a team that didn't.
  20. Ennder, Well argued about Weeks; I agree about his potential, progression, and particularly that his defense is strangely underrated despite the big improvement from last year. However, for the rest of this year, the team needs a finished offensive product to lead off. It drives me nuts that Weeks cannot make consistent solid contact. Yeah he walks alot and gets beaned alot, and occasionally mashes the ball with scary-power, but usually when he swings he either pops the ball up or whiffs at the low outside slider. Maybe if he focused on hitting the ball on the ground rather than driving the ball he would hit more liners and tough grounders? Bigger bat would help, too. I am convinced he will be a solid hitter, but I am also convinced that he will not develop into a good lead-off hitter.
  21. No fan owes Bill an apology for Bill and his agent's behavior. However, many on this board should apologize for their assertion that Hall was washed up and sucky. Heck, he can still improve in the field and at the plate (unlike Branyan). I am happy with a good fielding third baseman that will hit .250-25-80, who also has a reasonably affordable contract. I think that's what Bill will be in the next two years, if left alone. (He recently played just his 162nd game at third base!)
  22. Wasn't the money that was making me nervous; it was the length of the contract. Cinci will probably wear that one around their neck for the last two years or so. Unless they find a sucka to trade for him.
  23. Bill hit a HUGE homer for the second night in a row. (I think both were off righthanders.) Followed that with an excellent play in the field for the second out in the ninth. Branyan was on the bench where he belongs. Best trade we didn't make! Oh yeah; Hall has now played about 162 games at third in his career. He'll continue to improve in the field.
