  1. How legitimate is the threat that Hunstville would lose a baseball team? It certainly is reasonable that the Brewers would find a new affiliate, but would Hunstville lose a team, or would they just get the team from the affiliate the Brewers would land? The WV Power lost the Brewers, but they didn't lose baseball. I'm just curious how many available minor league stadiums are waiting to take a team from Hunstville.
  2. They are paying out about $24 million for Hall, Hardy, Hart, Riske, and Kendall. That's nearly 1/3rd of the payroll. None of them are producing at even an replacement level. How are you defining replacement level? If you look at one of the sites that does track that http://www.fangraphs.com/...pe=6&season=2009&month=0 , all are performing at or above replacement level. It's certainly not impressive to perform near replacement level, but too often when fans say player x isn't performing at replacement level, it is just exaggeration. Hardy should do better, Hart already has more walks than he did last year and is on pace to have more than he did 2 years ago, Hall isn't really a factor at this point (which is a waste of dollars, but isn't actively hurting the Brewers on the field much at this point), the bullpen is mostly doing fine without Riske, and Kendall is just an older version of Kendall.
  3. Why is everyone so eager to give up Escobar? There is a difference between being eager to give up Escobar and understanding that he pretty much has to be included in a deal for Halladay.
  4. I think you guys are overlooking Bourgeois as a replacement for Gamel. He is in the same situation as Heether, not being on the 40 man. If Macha isn't going to find time for Gamel, he's not likely to find time for someone else from the minors. And if a player isn't going to contribute, it doesn't make sense to add him to the 40 man. As it stands, the Brewers are going to be facing 3 RHP in the Cardinals series and it doesn't look like a move has been made, so maybe Gamel will get a start or two (one can only hope) and do something to catch Macha's eye and show that he deserves to stay up. Of course, if it is true that he would earn exactly one year of ST by season's end, I hope that he gets sent down before the ASB so that he doesn't miss 3 full series and he can play every day in the minors.
  5. There's two roster moves that could happen this week. One is that Gamel could be sent down, and the most likely options to replace are Irribarren and Heether. The other is that Parra could be brought up to start sometime this week, which means that someone has to go down. Narveson doesn't look like much, but the Brewers clearly wanted a 2nd lefty and preferred Narveson vs Swindle. Their opinion may have changed, but I try to include what I think the Brewers opinons are when guessing future moves. No way Smith goes down - don't let the recency of the grand slam overshadow the body of work Sometimes fairness doesn't come into play when making roster moves. I don't know if Smith deserves to go down, but he is one of the easiest to be sent back down.
  6. I assume any pitching will force a DFA of Narveson since he is out of options. The reason to bring up Heether is that he can play 3B. I don't know why the assumption would be that Narveson would be DFAed. He's one of the few lefty relievers on the 40 man. I think it's more likely that Smith gets sent down. As far as Heether's experience at 3B, I don't think that's compelling. Counsell, Casey and Hall can all play 3B, they don't need Irribarren to play there as well. It certainly could be Heether, he's been talked about and he's earned the right, I just think the most efficient use of roster space would be Irribarren, and since the person called up wouldn't be expected to get much PT, the peformance of the player isn't likely to be critical.
  7. I think its assumed that Joe Koshansky's 40 man spot is extremely tenuous. If the Brewers make a move for a SP, they will need that spot (unless minor leaguers already on the 40 man are included). As it is, if Gamel is being sent down, it's because the troika of Casey, Counsell and Hall are playing at 2B and 3B. It wouldn't make much sense to bring up Heether over Irribarren to just sit on the bench.
  8. I would have thought the Brewers would have waited until Gamel wouldn't have accumulated a year of ST before the year ends, but even NASA can make a math error, so I suppose someone could have miscounted (or didn't consider it). By my count, it does seem like it might be a year exactly at the end of the season.
  9. Adam Heether has been tearing it up. We need to pay attention to all ramifications. Since Heether isn't on the 40 man, it isn't likely that he will be the one called up. If Gamel goes down, it would be for Irribarren. As far as service time goes, I thought it was said at the time that Gamel came up that he would end this year with less than one year of ST if he stayed up the rest of the way. Do we know whether that's correct or not?
  10. Per a recent AM note, the Gamel Situation may be resolved Monday. I had thought this would be a good time to send down Gamel so he could play over the ASB, but didn't realize that the Sounds have a 4 day break as well. Would the Brewers send him down to Nashville and then send him to BC over the ASB to get a few more games in, or would they think that a couple days vacation would do him some good?
  11. Butler certainly shows some promise. With a full 40 man though, some things will need to change. I don't think losing Koshanksy is a big deal, but that only opens up one spot. I liked the acquisitions of Wright and Green for depth going into this season, but if the Brewers do make a move for a SP, I hope that we can trade one (or both) away in that deal so that we can get some value out of them.
  12. It should be, "Relative to his position, JJ Hardy was the most valuable player on the team last year". I am a big stats guy so I love the fact you are using them, but you have to make sure you know they they mean. This isn't the 1st time I told you that either. I think value should incorporate the salary of the player compared to their contribution. Therefore, to say that a player is the most valuable, compensation needs to be included. If you aren't taking that into consideration, it certainly makes sense that the player that has the most WAR is the best. If not, how would you determine who was the best player on a team in any given year. To tie this into the Escobar theme, it's highly likely that Hardy will be a better player than Escobar next year. But I think it's likely that Escobar would be more valuable than Hardy next year.
  13. Corey Hart would have been atop that links list had he played CF all of last year, correct? That's not correct. By my guess, he would be under 2.0, so behind Weeks, and maybe even lower than that, when comparing his subpar defense last year to the defense of CFers. I should probably quit posting in this thread, but I happen to feel JJ is overrated and should have been dealt for a #2 starter. Nobody is asking you to stop posting. But if you say something is a joke, it would be decent to actually support your statement. As far as trading for a #2 starter, it takes two to trade. It's easy for fans to just say that something should happen, but what team had a good young starter that they were going to give up for 2 years of Hardy?
  14. The fact Cameron was the second most valuable last year tells me how accurate that sight is That's not much of a response. What specifically do you disagree with? How would you support the claim that Fielder was better than either Hardy or Cameron last year?
  15. If you want to understand why people are saying Hardy was the best Brewer last year, you can see the supporting evidence here: http://www.fangraphs.com/...pe=6&season=2008&month=0 Hardy was the best Brewer last year because he plays a position where offense is lower, and he plays it well. Best player means more than best hitter.
  16. From: http://milwaukee.brewers....s_mil&fext=.jsp&c_id=mil "When he met with reporters on Friday, Macha still wouldn't rule out McClung, a day after the right-hander surrendered seven runs in 3 1/3 innings. But a more likely scenario could involve general manager Doug Melvin making a trade for a mid-level veteran such the D-backs' Doug Davis. The Brewers' top scout watched Davis pitch on Thursday. "
  17. I thought these quotes from Macha were interesting, from: http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/49776922.html "Perhaps, but it's unlikely McClung will get another chance. Manager Ken Macha said that spot would come up once more before the all-star break, a week from Saturday. Asked if McClung would take that turn, Macha wouldn't commit. "I don't know that," said Macha. "(General manager) Doug (Melvin) and I have spoke. A lot of things going into what he's doing. We're going to try to make it work."" Does that sound like a trade should be expected this week? I think Davis is the most likely candidate, and that obviously has some detractors here. So, if this suggests that a Davis type pitcher would be available, what would be a reasonable trade that would make the Diamondbacks make it happen now? I would guess some may be somewhat content with a Katin plus lower pitcher deal, but I can't see that being enticing enough for Arizona. So where's the line? What is the player that would be good enough for the Diamondbacks to grab that wouldn't hurt so much for the Brewers farm system?
  18. baseball-reference has minor league stats now, you can look at Heether's here: http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=heethe001ada
  19. Our only chance of getting Haren would be to give them the top pitcher in our minor league system. \ That would be part of the discussion, but not nearly enough. I think it would need to include their choice of any two pitchers, plus Dillard. I'm not good at constructing trades, but I'm having a hard time coming up with a trade that Arizona would like and that many Brewer fans wouldn't think of as mortgaging the future.
  20. Brewers 2009 in broom games (the good kind) 04/26 L 04/29 W 05/10 L 05/14 W 05/18 W 05/31 W 06/7 L 06/17 W 06/28 L 07/01 L If I looked at this right (from http://www.baseball-refer...9-schedule-scores.shtml) the Brewers are 5-5 in sweep games. Cardinals results (4/12 W, 4/23 W, 5/2 L, 5/21 W, 06/18 L, 06/21 W. Cardinals are 4-2.
  21. I could see Arizona seeing what is out there for Haren. In a season where lots of teams are close to contention and lots of teams want pitching, the competition for Haren could bring back quite a haul. I think it would take two or three significant prospects (maybe some filler too, depending on the ceiling of the prospects) to make it happen, it's just a question if any team gets desperate enough.
  22. Why did this trade happen? The Nats did it because they need someone who can actually play CF. Morgan can do that and should be able to for a couple of years. If you want to build a young pitching staff, it helps to have a guy in CF who will catch some balls. The Pirates did it because Morgan isn't going to be on the "next good Pirates team". Lastings was regarded as being a talent that could be a difference maker, the kind of player the Pirates haven't had enough of, and is young enough that he will be controlled for awhile. If he doesn't work out, the Pirates didn't lose much in the effort. If he comes close to reaching the potential that some think he had/has, it's a huge win for them.
  23. I wonder if a Hart + package would land Wang from the Yankees. Hart isn't an upgrade over what they have now, and it is good business to have depth at SP.
  24. I'm having fun with b-ref today. Brewers hitting 5th have an OPS of .704 and those hitting 6th are OPSing .855 It's like Macha is trying to play the hot hand between 5th and 6th and keeps guessing wrong. Kind of like how I choose my outfielders in fantasy baseball some days.
  25. Brewers in Day games this year. This is all day games, not only at MP, I don't how to easily get that data. Player OPS Hardy .310 Kendall .433 Fielder .836 Hall .783 Braun .785 Cameron .882 Hart .738 The samples are too small, and there is too much noise to take anything meaningful from this, but I was curious since the shadow thing has been written about by both AM and TH recently.
