  1. If the Mariners are stuck with the 2011 option, this means the Brewers are saving about $1.8M, assuming current reports are correct. I'm okay with that. Did Melvin give any indication that this was going to be a big trade? I just see a quote that some teams are interested and that he was working on something. Is there a reason that we should expect any team to pay more than the Mariners did?
  2. Did anyone REALLY think his veggie diet contributed to the slow start last year? I think his starchatarian diet had an impact on his ability to perform as a baseball player. Prince seems to have found a regimen that allows him to be very good. I hope that he will be able to adapt that as he gets older.
  3. So you cherry picked 3 of the top 19 basestealers to make your case? Why is Henderson an exeception, when you ignore Raines?
  4. Wonder how much pressure there was from Strasberg to Boras as the offers kept going down (reportedly $17 million during the Brewer game). I'm trying to make sense of this. The offer went up. It was at $12.5M. If someone speculated $17M, it was a rumor, or it may have been a different deal where the dollar figure was higher but the NPV was lower. Since several contracts waited until the deadline to get signed, it only makes sense to me that the deadline be moved up again. I just don't know what is reasonable. A week, a month, somewhere in between?
  5. According to the latest ratings at mlbtraderumors, Washburn is a Type B, and is far closer to not being ranked than being an A. I didn't realize how much money the Mariners have coming off the books, they could be a serious player in the FA market this offseason, or they could spend a big chunk of that if they offered arby to some players and had them come back.
  6. Harang is indisputably much better than Hall. Is there a thought that it would be a straight trade, contract for contract? If so, that is completely worth it. If the Brewers have to pay all of Hall's contract to get Harang, I would be hesitant. I suppose the answer is somewhere in the middle.
  7. Because Corey is cheap and can be controlled for a few more years cheaply. Abreu wasn't exactly expensive this season. Hart isn't a good enough player to trade a good pitcher for.
  8. "It's a win-win situation," Davis said of the possibility of being dealt. "I go to a team that's probably contending, this team gets something they probably need and I still become a free agent at the end of the year and can possibly come back here." The above is a quote from Davis. He won't be upset if Arizona trades him now, he wants the chance to play more meaningful games for the rest of the year. The quote is from a link from a couple of posts ago.
  9. I know it's early, but I started thinking about it this morning and figured I'd throw the questions out there. Who are the locks to be called up, when should they be called up, who isn't on the 40 man that will need to be there in the offseason and should they replace anybody currently on the 40 man? The team has Aug 31st off, and then is in St Louis on Sep 1. If the Brewers have any dream of making the playoffs, this 3 game series is crucial. It would make sense to have all available hands on deck. I'll just go through some players to get other's thoughts. Hardy is up for sure. Salome comes up in September. Is there any benefit to catching some games for the rest of the season in AAA, or is it best to bring him up immediately as a PH option and emergency catcher? Corporan: Is he a lock to stay on the 40 man this offseason, or will there be a need to make room for new players? If he isn't a lock to stay on, is there someone who isn't currently on the roster that should be put on so they can join the team in September? Wright: Does he come up as a 2nd lefty in the pen, or is there a pitcher that needs to be added this offeason who would add more value in September that should replace him? The rest is all the other pitchers. Which of them aren't ready to come up to get some September action.
  10. Arizona has that window now, and Davis hasn't been impressed with what they are offering. Really, if Arizona wants to have Davis next season, their best option is to send him to Milwaukee for whatever they can get. As Davis is packing up, bring him in and tell him, don't sign with Milwaukee before FA, we want you back next season and would like to have a fair shot of bringing you back to where your family has set up a life. It's doubtful that Milwaukee would be able to blow Davis away so much that he would sign before looking at what FA can bring him. Then Milwaukee offers arb, Davis rejects it and can sign back with Arizona, Milwaukee gets a comp pick, and Arizona has saved millions while possibly getting some roster filler. The solution makes so much sense for everybody involved.
  11. I'm wondering at what point Macha will be let go. I think there's a good chance that Randolph replaces him this season and gets his own audition to be the 2010 manager. He wouldn't be my choice, but I think he will be given the chance to try and save the season if the Brewers don't turn around quickly. I've always loved Davey Johnson. Does he have an interest in being a manager? I thought he hadn't been managing by choice, either to be with family or because of health reasons.
  12. That still doesn't make any sense. Arizona keeping Davis for the rest of the season doesn't have any impact on their ability to sign him as a FA after the season. If they send him to the Brewers, they have the same chance to sign him as they do if kept him on the team. The only difference is that if they keep him, they get to offer him arbitration, and they only benefit from that if he doesn't sign with them. So the only reason to keep him is to pay millions for the right to offer arbitration in the hope that he turns it down so they get a comp pick.
  13. Davis has said they aren't negotiating with Davis. From http://milwaukee.brewers.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090812&content_id=6389918&vkey=news_mil&fext=.jsp&c_id=mil "As for whether the D-backs would sign him to a contract extension before the end of the season, Davis did not sound optimistic. "I very much doubt it," he said.
  14. I don't think an extra year of service is worth a ton more value, but 2 years of control is better than 1. If the Brewers can get an extra year of service while giving Escobar a 3 week audition, that sounds like a win-win to me. If Hardy was performing better, this wouldn't be an issue. I don't see a good reason to upset the player's union for JJ. I think this is overblown. Hardy has earned this demotion with his poor offense. If the players union files a grievance, what is the worst that can happen, Hardy gets those weeks awarded to him? Is there a precedent for that? The union isn't going to have FA boycott the Brewers, they want their players to get the best deal possible, and if the Brewers are offering the best deal, that's what they should take.
  15. If that's the case, they should offer him an extension. That they haven't done so doesn't support this idea.
  16. Why should there be a movie about him? What has he won? He had a 102 win team in 2001 that lost to the evil Yankees in the LDS 3-2. He lost Giambi to those evil Yankees. He then put together a team with a $40M payroll that won 103 games. But he still lost in the LDS, this year to the Twins. It's a story about doing different things than the establishment and having success, but not being able to get complete success. It's the story of that season and the idea, not about Beane's tenure. If you read the linked script, it's easy to see how this works as a movie.
  17. Not much of an update, but Pitt talked up "Moneyball" a bit at a recent premiere: http://moviesblog.mtv.com...ing-rally-for-moneyball/ Basically he wants to play Beane, he would be fantastic in that role, and he hopes the film can still get done. As an aside, I had a friend of a friend who got a degree in set design and moved out to Hollywood. He says it's not uncommon for people to not work for a year because they get hired for films that look like they will get made and then get scrapped. This movie was days from starting the shoot when it got put on the burner. Will be an interesting story to follow.
  18. From http://milwaukee.brewers....s_mil&fext=.jsp&c_id=mil Melvins is quoted ""Other than Cliff Lee, who else had made a difference?" Melvin asked. "We tried, but people know the value of pitching. They have the right to ask for your top guy. But is it right to give up a top guy for a [pitcher] who's going to make seven, eight, nine starts?" As a GM, it sometimes works out that you ask for the moon and you get it. But Arizona is fairly gutsy to think that they could get anything close to a top guy for Davis on a waiver claim. It confuses me that Arizona would trade Owings away to get Dunn and then not offer him arbitration, but we are now expected to believe that they will pay $2.6+M to pay Davis just to get Type B compensation. Maybe they see last year as a mistake and don't want to repeat it.
  19. Professional golfers pay coaches to help them. I don't know why it should be so surprising that some coaches can actually provide some insight into how a pitcher can improve, or get back to where they have previously had success. Castro didn't do anything to retain his job, and I agree that Parra coming back from AAA with some improvement after spending time with Bosio was the death knell for Castro's time here.
  20. Thanks for the link, Brawndo. I had considered the extra year of service time when I was driving and initially heard the news, but Cameron brings up something that I don't remember seeing here, that Hardy will be due less of a raise this offseason if he is a 4+ year player as opposed to a 5 year ST player. I don't know how much of an impact that actually will have but it's obviously something that Hardy and his agent will care about.
  21. Jeter fielding is kinda like Suppan pitching. When he's healthy, he's close to league average. When he's banged up but still plays, he's just awful. Jeter has had years where he gets nicked up but doesn't miss significant time but it really just drags down his range. That's why he has those spikes where he's the worst SS defensively. But in years where he's healthy, he has somewhat decent fielding stats. I brought that up to mgl when he used to post on btf years ago, and he acknowledged that injuries would affect a players defense, but said that it would be too difficult to try to account for that in projections. He's right of course, and a player's injuries are a part of their history, so they shouldn't be completely ignored when doing projections. Anyway, the point stands that Jeter is the Yankees shortstop in 2010. Maybe he becomes an OF or a Molitor style DH in 2011 or later, but any plan for next year needs to include Jeter at short.
  22. the only chance was to trade for a pitcher using Hart and to sign a FA outfielder like Abreu who was actually an upgrade over Hart, How does this make sense? Why would a team give up a good pitcher to trade for Hart when they can just sign Abreu?
  23. McAlvy reports different language than the one from Cots: http://milwaukee.brewers.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090812&content_id=6388086&vkey=news_mil&fext=.jsp&c_id=mil According to Articles 19e and 21b of Major League Baseball's Basic Agreement, "If a player is optionally assigned for a total of less than 20 days in one championship season, the player shall be credited with Major League service during the period of such optional assignment(s)." Ash is quoted "What you're describing is an unintended byproduct of this," Ash said. "The driving factor is performance."
  24. Per http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/53087737.html TH reports that he doesn't think the deal will happen. Melvin says that Arizona isn't looking to move Davis, and if they did they would like to get the equivalent of a 2nd round pick to approximate Type B compensation.
  25. If WAR has Hall above average and Suppan below average for this season that stat is seriously flawed. It is measuring against replacement level, not average. It includes defense, and Hall is rated well this year. It also indicates how low replacement level offense is set. As one indication, Kendall, with only a positional adjustment and no help from a fielding rating is .1 WAR.
